He's very bad, but so are a lot of other artists. I think he got a lot of shit because he sold a ton despite his lack of skill.

Yeah, Liefeld actually had a good sense for visual storytelling, it's part of why he became a hit in the first place. But he lacked strong artistic fundamentals so as his workload increased his art started to fall apart. Poor self-discipline likely didn't help either, especially when he went independent and didn't have the structure to keep him on task.

Not by much I'd argue, his newer stuff is still pretty bad anatomy-wise. He's just terrible at composition in general.

Creating just one characters that stays relevant 3 decades after its creation and that also obtains mainstream popularity is impressive. Modern Spider-man's entire visual look. Pushing the way he swung and the bigger eyes. I'll acknowledge he cribbed some of Art adams and Michael Golden's things like the webs, but he really built up the visuals. Ultimately most of the artists were sticking close to Romita's style and designs, Mcfarlane shook things up.

Hush is the one with the most mainstream appeal, but characters like Grifter and Zealot have become DC Comics mainstays.

He's pretty bad, but his art can be good if he has somebody to point out his mistakes or make corrections for him.
As an ARTIST, I think Liefeld deserves recognition. His works speaks volumes and his style is expressive, full of energy and entertaining. The hyperbolic aspects and the way he circunvents his own limits to deliver (like when he hides feet) turned out to be enjoyable in its own way.
As a teenager, I used to think about how rad he was. As an adult, I see his art as good enough to entertain his target audience.
Only manchild nerds who still read capeshit written and drawn for teens mock Liefeld. He is accomplished in his dream job and maybe no one here could say the same.

People here are harsh on good artists yet shower lesser artists with praise. I'm not sure why it's so common.
I stand by the biggest problem with Liefeld isn't even his anatomy, but his line art and sense of three dimensions.
There's much worse anatomy in a lot of comics(and manga has a ton of questionable anatomy) that is entirely saved because the rendering is well done or smooth and consistent and thus looks right. Liefeld still does these weird scratchy lines and crudely constructed things on mouths and eyes that look overworked and not like a natural style. It doesn't feel intentionally sketchy, it feels like he just has no control over his line work. It might sound vague and its hard to describe, but when he was inked before he has a set style you could see how much better his work could look.
How the frick do you even pencil this and then think it looks good enough to fill-in. Did he just have no fricking time left and needed to immediately get and cash the paycheck for a dying relative or something?
No. The problem is he had nobody to keep him in check after becoming successful.
He didn't care. This was a promo piece, someone at Marvel told him it didn't look right but he scoffed and nobody at Marvel wanted to challenge him. Being famous will do that to you.

I'd say that's more a double-edged sword than just a problem. His ego and impulsiveness definitely led to his downfall, but that same attitude to screw the rules was important in his push to form Image comics. Liefeld was the primary instigator in convincing the others to take the leap and go independent.
His greatest accomplishment was his role in the formation of Image, a creator-driven publisher that continues to be successful. Of course, part of the reason that Image has survived is because they kicked Liefeld out of leadership once they realized he wasn't pulling his weight there either. He's really kind of a tragic hero when you think about it. He could have a musical written about him.
Pride comes before the fall as the old saying goes. He needed a handler...and that used to be Todd until Rob betrayed him by taking work from Marvel.
It was all downhill from there.
