Yeah but that’s not the fricking point. Batman was driving his entire point home harder by not killing him. Shit, how many times does Batman need to catch this guy? It’s the fricking zogbot pigs that keep letting him escape custody, blame them. The Punisher would blow Joker’s head off but the Punisher isn’t trying to be some beacon of hope, he just kills bad guys. Batman is trying to set an example as a blanket solution rather that directly solving the problem. That said it boils down to whether you agree with Batman’s philosophy or not, some might see all that as moronic.
But even if he killed the Joker because the Joker is THAT bad it becomes a slippery slope of
      >well we HAD to kill that guy
      >and we should probably kill this guy too
      >and in that case these guys should probably die
It just erodes away at what Batman is trying to do. Batman “not killing the Joker killed trillions” is just stupid and doesn’t make any sense.

Why did the show try to beat us over the head about how smart Light was again?

It's from his perspective. He thinks he's so smart that his vision for the world is the best one. As the viewer, you have the distance to see he's a bit of a moron.

        Anonymous

This, how he got caught at the start was textbook moronation. As soon as someone shows they are out to get him he kills them. Had he just left the fake L alive no one could have proven intent behind the deaths.

imo it's the opposite. light had plot armor even though L caught him and considering the stakes there's no way he'd get let out of prison, especially as the multiple kira thing was known.

Idk if I’d call it plot armor, Kira’s plan that he’d been building up the whole season just paid off. He planned to have that shinigami kill itself to kill L by using Misa as bait.

I’m not defending the ending because I don’t like it but unlike something like Attack on Titan which is stupid and makes no sense, in Death Note Kira was written to have been blinded by his own ego and having defeated L there was no way he could lose to anyone else and made one sloppy mistake in the end that fricked him.

didn't he start killing increasingly less dangerous people? I don't remember exactly, but didn't he eventually move on from the violent murderers onto petty thieves and such?

he was massively egotistical, AND he didn't really know the details of how the book worked at first

        Anonymous

He first went after the big fish like the Soros and Stalin type guys and corrupt government officials and cartel bosses, etc. etc. and big name Hannibal Lecter type murderers and pedos and scoured the Earth down the ladder in that order. But he didn’t judge everyone by death, he wasn’t slaughtering shoplifters and shit. He did however keep a big list of petty criminals to kill in case he needed a big herd of people to kill if Kira had to go into hiding or something to the kills would never stop since he kinda needs time and dedication to kill the more mysterious figures like mob bosses and stuff.

He had a consistent time slot when he would do it that lined up with a Japanese high school student, L lied about a world wide braodact and actually played it locally in areas until he got a reaponse whoch light took the bait whoch proves light was in this small area of japan, and Light was a honor student with a police chief father giving him access to databases and the intelligence to make use of it.
Essentially if light didn’t sperg out and took a day off sometimes or did it whenever he would have been fine but his ego of wanting to be a god of a new world shaped by his own hands got in the way

You do not want kid's fantasy of being a comic book superhero to include murdering people. That's why the creators made the decision that he doesn't kill. It's not because they're too stupid to realize that some people need to be killed.

Killing criminals is bad, because sooner or later, you will kill someone innocent.
Obviously, killing a dude who's raping someone or is holding a gun to 6yo's head is completely justified. But if you start just murdering random thugs on the street, you will make a mistakes.

As the series progressed Light fell victim to "absolute power corrupts absolutely". He lost his humanity, the moral backbone and driving motivation behind the character that vowed to sacrifice his soul for the world's salvation.
At the start, he was willing to give up the notebook had any harm come to his loved ones, but later he ends up killing his dad to further his goals.
Losing himself to the notebook was what he did wrong, not killing criminals (the morality of which is always upto debate).

Kill them and they'll only be replaced. You have to kill like three of them, then release a manifesto saying you'll continue killing them if they don't follow your demands. They won't, so you'll keep killing them until they do. Kira's biggest weapon was never the death note, it was fear. He made the world a safer place by making it so everyone was too scared to commit crimes.

  20. 5 months ago

That’s not true the first thing he did was take out any big names in government and underground organized crime and shit like that. He specifically left petty criminals alive in case he needed a mass kill for whatever reason to throw L off his scent. Literally the first thing he did was wipe Israel and Hollywood off the face of the Earth.

Even though what Kira was doing could be considered good (wiping out all ~~*corruption*~~ from governments, etc. killing crime lords and pedophiles) as soon as L showed up Kira was slaughtering innocents left and right just so he could play IRL Among Us with him. So yeah while DANGEROUSLY based Kira is definitely bad.
Batman on the other hand, unlike Kira, isn’t trying to be a direct solution to the problem. Batman is all politics, he just wants the be something for people to aspire to and stop crime that way.
Going off on a tangent Rorschach while very similar to Batman is trying to be a direct solution to the problem unto himself and slaughter every bad guy he can get his hands on whereas Batman can just shatter the back of one bad ass criminal and scare other criminals into being good or inspire good people to not be apathetic sissies.
The Batman “kill a killer you get more killers” thing is just Kevin Smith level reddittry from product-obsessed soibeards who don’t even get these characters they pretend to love and have 500 funkopops of.

Light's error was also killing the law enforcement who came after him and not just sticking to criminals. Although the entire theme of Death Note is Light's hubris in thinking himself a god so it does fit his character that he'd throw a shitfit over anybody attempting to resist him in any meaningful way.

      Anonymous

His only “error” was underestimating Near and not considering the possibility that the Note he intended to use to assassinate Near and co. was faked because he was so obsessed with L. If you’re saying he made moral “errors” with killing innocents to achieve his goals then yes.

Light wanted grandeur because he thought getting good grades and being a successful human being was an abysmal fate. And ultimately he just wanted to duel L for the ultimate stakes, being the overlord of Earth was secondary for him at that point.
