Atlantis Squarepantis was such a deeply disappointing episode that it's the exact point I finally gave up on watching the show. Everything about it from top to bottom was trash.
I remember it had a tie in video game so I was convinced it was going to be the equivalent of a second movie.
Then I saw it and was so confused and underwhelmed.
I held out a bit longer. I think it was the that one surfing special that I finally realized it was a catastrophic mess that wasn't going anywhere. All that build up for an end of the episode blink and you miss it scene of Spongebob surfing. I don't know why that was the one that turned me off. Maybe it was that I had been burned by overhyped specials nonstop by that point ever since ~2005 when they advertised a "Where's Spongebob?" episode pretty heavily. I didn't even bother watching the Hillenburg Renaissance episodes. Were any of those good?
It was a definite downgrade from season 3, but it had some good moments. I remember my favorites being Krusty Towers, Patrick Smartpants, and Where's Gary.
The “grotesqueness” of seasons 4 to 7 I think is often pointed out as problematic. Not just the infamous brutal toenail carving bit but also the frequent nudity too.
If you go to the comments section they all consider his nakedness for the whole episode to be gross and unnecessary and they consider it the first zombie SpongeBob episode.

Nope. When I was a kid, I didn't even notice a quality decline with season 4 and I still think that the Strangler episode is just as good as any of season 2 or 3's best.
As an adult, it's definitely the start of the pull away from what made seasons 1-3 great and endearing, but it's like Simpsons seasons 8-9: the start of the decline but nowhere near the bottom or even the steep part of the curve. Anyone who says it's just as bad as 6 and 7 is baiting you.
Then you were kind of a dumb kid, practically everyone noticed a big change. Also the Tattletale Strangler is a season 3 episode so I almost think you're not even aware of what the season dividing line actually was.
It had some good episodes and it’s cool it did get the show going again after a long break. Skill crane, dunces and dragons, have you seen my snail, best frenemies, ghost host, and a few others were ok
i remember wheb the surf episode came out and the guy said one of you will not return to spongebob Patrick and squidward it meant lne of them was being written off the show and was in major suspense to find out who
It was a decent enough season. The decline was definitely noticeable, but it did hold a decent number of good episodes and the bad stuff there still isn't nearly on the level of what would come after. Same with Season 5, to a lesser extent.
Still think the movie should have been the finale, though.
Nah, 5 and 6 is when it became irredeemable, Atlantis Squarepantis would've been a good finale
>hire David Bowie for the musical episode
>have him be the only character that doesn't sing
Yeah, no. That episode was shit.

Whoa, that special was the moment I dropped the show too. They advertised that piece of shit so heavily yet it sucked so hard.

4 was the beginning of the quality decline but it had decent eps sprinkled in
I never bother past season 4
It was a definite downgrade from season 3, but it had some good moments. I remember my favorites being Krusty Towers, Patrick Smartpants, and Where's Gary.
it was mediocre, had some decent episodes
>Dunces and Dragons
>Selling Out
>All that Glitters
>Ghost Host
>Best Frenemies
it was the season of Cervas kino
All that glitters feels like the first zombie episode just because of SpongeBob being naked the whole episode.
ah yes, character being randomly naked. the first sign of seasonal rot.
The “grotesqueness” of seasons 4 to 7 I think is often pointed out as problematic. Not just the infamous brutal toenail carving bit but also the frequent nudity too.
>thought it was just some random nonsense
>it's actually just chimping out about how le gross it is
thank you for proving that it's a shit complaint. next thing you know, we're gonna bring up how "le spatula is waycist towards frenchmen"

I think it's alright, same with season 5. Both have a number of standout episodes. Season 6 is when the show went rotten
Is that the season with the fricking toenail episode?
It wasn't terrible but it was a huge step down compared to seasons 1-3 and even kids were able to tell that something was off
No just a turning point, and not as god as the first 3.
It was decent, but it still had some great episodes. Season 5 is where the decline really started and Season 6 hit rock bottom (no pun intended)
Spongebob went downhill after season 2

The Tattle tale Strangler ep is season 3 not 4.

Yes, zoomie.
Season 4 is when the designs started to become more humanoid and just sit off with the rest of the established characters.
It wasn’t bad, season 5 was the beginning of the rot
The show changed when they replaced the fish head guy with Perch Perkins.
