>Was she… >Autistic? >Depressed? >A femcel? >A social moron?
I feel like this question and variants of it always come up with the start of any Daria thread. To which I implore people to go back and watch the season 1 finale. At best, she just has NLOG syndrome.
If you need an answer Daria in the box is for you. Basically as a parent it's your job to socialize your kid, otherwise they'll be playing social catch-up the rest of their lives.
Daria missed the boat, but instead of being an awkward kid she just decided to keep mostly to herself.
It's funny how people praise and idolize Daria when in truth she's a horrible person and a huge loser. She's so insanely hyper critical and nihilistic on everything to the point where she has absolutely zero direction, goal or even any passions or hobbies. Everything is just beneath her and the only time she ever seems to want to do anything is if it results in her making others miserable.
Which is a pretty fair encapsulation of gen X as a youth culture. They were the ones that saw boomers fricking up their future with no recourse and decided to go limp. They were never going to be heard in the first place, so why bother being polite about it? Their future is ruined anyways, so why put in pointless effort?
>She's so insanely hyper critical and nihilistic on everything
There's a good scene with Daria and her mom, in which discussing Daria being critical of others but not herself.
I kind of feel like Daria is a pretty good litmus test or filter on if a person is an butthole. If you read her as an butthole, you probably are an butthole. The kind of person that says autism and adhd isn't real so you can keep hating people with asd and adhd. Like you need for it not to be real so you can feel justified in looking down on people.
Daria probably had autism or something similar. There are two episodes that hint at it. She had autism in a time where people didn't think little girls could have autism, so nothing was done about it.
She is at odds with the world because of her autism. The world doesn't make sense because she doesn't understand or see the unspoken social rules people use. All she sees are people disobeying common ethics and morals that people are taught as children. Her observations are not really meant to say that she is better. Just her verbalizing how irrational the world looks to her. She has to say them, otherwise the viewer wouldn't know what she is thinking. Daria as a show didn't let the viewer hear internal dialog for any of the characters.
Her dialog is less a judgment or her declaring her superiority as it is her vocalizing her frustration with a world where people are paradoxes and contradictions. Her frustration with a world that doesn't make sense. And her frustration as being a member of Gen X or Y and not having any power as a teen.
>>you have free reign to be a petty and shallow person because of autism and add >No. Nice reddit spacing homosexual.
that is really you bringing your own biases into the conversation. You find pointing out the contradictions in things and people to be petty and shallow. You are making a huge assumption that all other people think like you. That they are constantly judging things as being inferior or better than them. That everyone else obsesses about their position in a social hierarchy. That if someone says anything, it relates to that process.
You are assuming she is petty and shallow because you are petty and shallow but present in a way so that others do not find out that you are. You keep your mouth shut so others dont find out.
You are projecting your worldview onto a cartoon character.
Also, lol at you opting into admitted you're a kid. Spacing between paragraphs existed before reddit. You'd know that if you were born before 1990 or used the web before 2005
>she doesn't understand or see the unspoken social rules people use
She does understand them, she just doesn't give a frick about them because she thinks she doesn't care what other people think about her (but she actually does). What is why autismgays and trying to justify everything with "is autism"?
>she knows exactly what to say to upset them, autisms can't do that

>Why do people keep repeating this >she's never trying to upset people. people are upset, she's expressing her displeasure with them and their behavior.
Unironicly sexism. They probably think any woman that shows intelligence and speaks their mind is a b***h.
Probably goes hand in hand with thinking Quinn is best, you know, an attractive young teen that spends the first two seasons being an overly agreeable spineless twat.
That or their are just stupid. Maybe they have face blindness. I don't know. Cinemaphile always has like 6 people who don't understand this show and the motives of the characters.
>If you read her as an butthole, you probably are an butthole. The kind of person that says autism and adhd isn't real so you can keep hating people with asd and adhd.
Didn't realize one of the symptoms for Autism is being an articulately smug b***h all the time.
I did like how the show helped portray that. All Daria's issues were self imposed. The head cheerleader and quarterback were the friendliest people in the whole school and invited Daria and Jane to their parties all the time.
>The head cheerleader and quarterback of Lawndale High are married and have three girls and two boys. Brittany is the weathergirl at the local news station and moonlights as part-time cheerleading coach at Lawndale High. Kevin is a stay-at-home dad who dabbles in children's birthday-party entertainment. While he can't quite squeeze into his belly-baring uniform anymore, you better believe Brittany's cheerleading uniform fits her like a glove — and she wears it every Halloween.
They got the best ending.
>she has absolutely zero direction, goal or even any passions or hobbies
Her hobbies are reading, and she writes short stories, poetry, and essays.
But you're right that she has no direction in life. She has dreams (shown in the episode where she wrote about the future lives of her and her family, where even Quinn is happy), but her dreams don't require her to do anything new or deal with many people.
She's good at writing but she never really shows interest as doing it as a career or for fun. Plus the reading part comes off more that she likes it because it makes her less approachable and closed off rather than an actual joy of it.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Daria fan actually praise her character outside of her wits. Most people know she’s kind of a dickhead person and not someone anybody should strive to be.
It used to be that you could have shows where characters were multifaceted and had negative parts of themselves and didn't just exist to be writer/audience self-inserts who didn't need to be perfect. Daria was definitely the moral conscience of Lawndale but she was by no means portrayed as being infalible. She was judgmental and cloistered and kept up a wall of cynicism as a means of keeping others out and people who were observant enough (like Tom or Jody) could see right through it and had no issues in calling her out.
she was just a lesbian
there isn't much evidence for autism besides the stereotypical asperger's stuff with her voice
which is strange because i see a lot more people claiming Daria is autistic over someone like, say, Hank Hill
Hank's emotional intelligence is far too high for that. Reflect on how many times he hears about some happening and goes "well, I guess Bill/Dale are going to <exactly what they're going to do>> over this, I guess we should get there before the cops."
that doesn't mean anything. dale and bill are idiots and incredibly predictable. picking up on that pattern has nothing to do with innate emotional intelligence
Hank's not autistic. He acts like anybody who had to live with Cotton for 18 years.
he doesn't pick up on social context very well. he doesn't recognize when Buck Strickland's wife is trying to frick him in the bathtub until she's entirely nude. he doesn't realize how much of a dick he's being in the rose gardening episode by being so stringent
that and his intense interest in propane
>nah just smart and surrounded by idiots. very much in the line of Hank Hill.
Hank isn't autistic. He seems to pick up the unsaid emotions of others.
Bobby might be autistic and gay though
i genuinely don't know why some people think Bobby is more socially-inept than Hank is. Bobby is a ladies' man, despite being a lazy fat piece of shit
Hank does not have much emotional intelligence outside of his circle, like how he got suckered into paying sticker price for a vehicle multiple times. That and he also was unable to pick up on the cues of those two guys being gay and thought they were siblings. He also proposed to Peggy by saying 'boy, ah sure am not unfond of you peggy, ah tell you hwhat'
It only took 25 years for people to finally conclude and agree that Jane was the best, Quinn did nothing wrong, and Daria is a shitter in her own show.
>It only took 25 years for people to finally conclude and agree that Jane was the best, Quinn did nothing wrong, and Daria is a shitter in her own show.
lol, Its pretty sad how much gen z likes Quinn. She was obsessed with how she looked and the approval of others. It took her 4 years to grow a spine and stop letting other people shit on her.
Everyone has always known Jane was the best. She had a calm balance between Quinn and Daria.
>Quinn was actually the least judgmental member of the Fashion club.
revisionist zoomer bullshit. How can you say that when Stacy was right there? Quinn spent the whole first season just agreeing with Sandi. It took the whole show for Quinn to grow a spine. That was her character progression.
She was in an upper class gated community, within a upper middle tier town in Texas. Of two lawyer parents living in a house that was converted from a hospital.
Eh, that was like a 120,000 house in the late 90s. A forklift driver in the 90s could have afforded that if it was a union place. My aunt who worked in a grocery store with a husband that drove a rig also had a similar house in Texas.
Sure, her parents might have been stacking cash or at least the mom was BUT there wasn't anything particularly rich about how Daria was living. No car. No fancy cell. No designer clothes. Went to public school.
Shits really gotten bad where people think a 3 bedroom house is "rich"
Bro, Helen was a corporate lawyer and Jake ran his own consulting business. The Morgendorffers were, at a minimum, upper-middle class and pulling in six figures a year. Almost all of the families in the series are fairly well off, even the Lanes. Lawndale is clearly intended to be a pretty well off suburb.
i really doubt she was written with autism in mind, and i think anyone who thinks she is autistic it's projecting autistic traits in her actions really hard or don't really know what autism is. During the show we see why she thinks what she thinks and the show also has a lot of episodes exploring that these are valid reasons and also explores what she fails at by thinking like this (my favourites episodes like this being the one where she goes to a reunion with her old camping friends and the one where she has to get a loan)
She was just a b***h.
or just a cuck?
Scratch that, she's the one who cucks
>fricks her best friend's brother
>fricks her best friend's boyfriend
autistic pussy got mad grip fr
Built for B&BC
still better than her getting with Tom
why DID she take that picture of them coming out from the changing room though?
No.
She's DARIA!
