I think another layer to the joke could be that when Pim said that his family can be a little on edge during what I think was after the holidays, he meant it literally. They could show up again in season 2 in their perfectly normal and loving usual states. Pretty much a comedically exaggerated Jeckyl and Hyde but with an entire family. Even Pim's dad seemed relatively normal during the enchanted forest flashback.
