It was pretty good. It sometimes gets that Netflix problem where you can tell the director didn't do as many takes as he should have, but there's a few standout moments in the series. The entire one-off story with Hob Gadling was amazing.
If the show has sexy Black women protagonists, then I'll watch it, it doesn't matter if the show is shit. I just love sexy Black women so much, the darker the skin, the better.
Maybe a bit rough around the edges, but I enjoyed season 1 a lot. Sadly season 2 is taking so long that I wouldn't be surprised if Netflix quietly cancelled it, so I wouldn't really recommend getting into the series now, least you don't mind watching an unfinished show.
I'm a big fan of the comics and I didn't watch the show because I was really disappointed by the aesthetic.
The Endless were always something ethereal, visually. They blended in with the shadows, they blended in with the light, and even if they looked human, you wouldn't mistake them for human.
In the show, it's just plain humans. I found it boring and lacking in imagination, with little love to the craft of cinematography and lighting.
For example, I think that if the actress for Death is black, then she should be wearing white or maybe have white hair. Something to give that stark contrast that all the Endless have. Just something that visually pops and stays in your mind.
>The Endless were always something ethereal, visually. They blended in with the shadows, they blended in with the light, and even if they looked human, you wouldn't mistake them for human
This, and I'm surprised it wasn't a bigger complaint. Negress Death sucks but also Morpheus shouldn't have been some pasty white dude who could pass for human, he should've been a walking corpse or something ghastly
I am not a huge fan but this was what prevented me from watching the show. In the comics there's this specific atmosphere but the clip of the show I've seen was just some dude on a bench.

I almost feel like Netflix cast a black Death specifically so that people would focus on that, and thus allow Netflix to get away with not making ANY of the Endless look right
The visuals are really bland compared to the comic. It also has the problem of trying to translate the comic into a full season long story so some things feel off or poorly paced but overall is fine. Death was cute.
you know, going from the show to the comics, it's remarkable how many characters weren't originally black women
and how much more meek and less capable all those characters originally were
I liked it a good bit, but the plot felt weaker in the last third or so when they tried to tie plot points together. The cereal convention should've been its own standalone thing.
Same Anon, sorry for the late reply. I hope you'll see this answer.
Orpheus' wife died on their wedding day, he went to Morpheus, his father, to bring her back to life. Obviously, Morpheus denied the request, so Orpheus became angry and told Dream he is no longer his father.
Dream tried to reason with his son, but Orpheus turned his back to his father and walk-off.
>Was the Sandman show really that bad?
No, it was just mildly disappointing and mediocre, which is almost worse than being really bad. Watching it felt like watching a low budget summer theater version of the comic books.
Mad Hattie is White so that's all I care about
But for real, OP, it's a fricking tv show based on a comic book
it's not identical to the comic but it's an ok show
It wasn't bad. There were plenty of things that could have been better and we all would have liked the Endless to look more...well, Endless. My big gripe was Despair. I get you can't have a nude, grey-skinned troll woman, but...yeah.
The Audible versions are superior. They had John Lithgow be Emperor Norton I in that, it'd be pretty good casting for the series too.
I binged the entire Netflix show in a week and THEN bought the Vol 1 collection and started reading the comics properly.
And say what you will about doing it in this order, but watching the show first and then seeing the original later lets me appreciate the show itself more since now I can laugh at how much they change rather than being disappointed with the changes had I read the comic first. I think the show did the roadside diner story *slightly* better though
>I think the show did the roadside diner story *slightly* better though
I only saw the 24 Hours episode and it was kind of a shitty adaptation. Instead of a descent into madness it was basically "everyone, just admit to your partnet you cheat on them, and you're gay lol"
>I only saw the 24 Hours episode and it was kind of a shitty adaptation.
You two! Fight each other!
Well I guess I should clarify that I like different parts of both versions. The comic had more variety in the actions Jack or whatever his name is was doing to the poor people, while the show was more intense with what it chose to do. If that makes sense.

it's decent, it even did one of the arcs better than the comic (the roadside diner), i am eagerly waiting for season 2
the female constatine shit was awful, though
Yes

It looks awful. People here defend terrible adaptations all the time.

Don't know, don't care. The fact that they raceswapped Death by itself means I refuse to ever watch it.
The cinematography looked boring so I did not bother with it.
The casting controversy did not help it.
It’s a good show unless you’re a racist. Which is a high requirement for this place
Wow most of Netflix's subscribers must be racist.

My thoughts exactly. Right down to giving Death a white outfit and hair.

the real yiddish trick is using basic "divide and conquer" tactics to get away with a sloppy job
the endless where always just white people in normal clothes
It was pretty great but the unparalleled bad thing was killing the Dragon Gregory.
It's mostly just boring
The visuals are really bland compared to the comic. It also has the problem of trying to translate the comic into a full season long story so some things feel off or poorly paced but overall is fine. Death was cute.

Is that starfire?
Yes

How's their adoptation of Dreams of the Thousand cats and Calliope?
Song of Orpheus is my go to story of Sandman.
Cats was very very good, because it's basically all CGI. Calliope was slightly less good, but still decent.
Thanks, Anon.
Why is he just a head and why is Dream such a dick?
Dream is kind of a dick sometimes.
Same Anon, sorry for the late reply. I hope you'll see this answer.

God fricking damn it I need to breed a black woman
I never watched it but it was made in the 21st century. So, probably.
>Was the Sandman show really that bad?
No, it was just mildly disappointing and mediocre, which is almost worse than being really bad. Watching it felt like watching a low budget summer theater version of the comic books.
It was literally the most comics accurate thing ever made, but people lost their shit because Death was black.
>It was literally the most comics accurate thing ever made
Yes, and?
I finally understand why Watchmen was once considered to be unfilmable, its impossible to capture the same essence of the original comic onto screen.
Death being a hot white goth chick was *the* most important part of the comic.
This. She's an iconic waifu. That Gaiman didn't fight hard enough to keep her intact shows me I can't trust his judgment or this production.
>I never watched it.
Nobody did. I'm not even sure it really existed.
Things are rarely as bad as Cinemaphile make it seem. You won't get real opinions here.

Pretty great actually. I wasn't expecting the dialogue to translate well to LA but they did a good job adapting it
I don't remember more than half the cast being gay in the comic.
Then you don't remember the comic well.
Netflix slop

nope. they barely adapted sound of her wings.
the hob part was actually okay though.
I didn't like that they bothered updating it to present day and had him miss their meeting. Why not just set it in the 80s?
>had him miss their meeting
Did he like, miss miss one? It's been a while since I saw it.
yeah hob buys the land up the road and converts a building into an inn/b&b in 2000? and dream meets him 120? years later
Still the best episode of the season.
It was fine, just incredibly boring visually.
Just read the comics.
