Watching The Office for the first time

I've never been on such a roller coaster of cringe in my entire life. I'm laughing and cringing so hard at the same time I didn't think to be able to feel such a mixture of emotions.
Ricky Gervais's character is amazing.

I remember trying to watch the American version because Carrell had just come off 40 year old virgin. I think I made it through 6 or 7 episodes and I just couldn't take it anymore. I also couldn't stand Emily Blunt's husband with his constant camera mugging.

It's not bad it's just very different.

The original version really leaves you with the impression they are actual people living actual lives.
The US version has cartoon character version of adults running around and suffering no consequences for heinous gross negligence etc.

You expressed that much better than I would have.
People have posted clips that I've laughed at from the US version. I just have no desire to watch it having seen those first episodes.

            They're two very different shows

US office is a sitcom, a good one and I fact the only one I can tolerate. UK office feels more like a mockumentary about how dreadful it is to work as a office wagie and waste your life doing something you profoundly hate. It's kinda depressing.

yes, its weak, soft and inoffensive instead of mean and soul crushing.
          thats why americans love it.

            >inoffensive
Steve Carells character is very offensive. He calls people homosexual, moronic and mocks them for being fat and ugly. Hes portrayed as being in the wrong but that's no different than the UK version

Those words weren't considered so bad back then. In later seasons of Dawson's Creek characters were throwing around "gay" and "moronic" and they weren't supposed to look like scumbags.

The only reason to watch the office is for a soothing background cadence and frickibly plain workplace roasties. I can't imagine the br*ttish version is funny enough to justify seeing such a drab and tiresome people.

it’s really great. the characters are so rich and almost every line is quotable.

makes you wonder why that level of quality isn’t present in Gervais and Merchant’s other works

The UK Office is far superior to the US Office.
Its an indictment of terrible US humor

That was until The Increasing Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret came around and gave those Brits a good once for they won't soon forget

I wish they'd never made the Xmas special though.
Dawn fricking off to America and leaving Tim with Gareth is basically the antidote to the crowdpleasing sentimentality of the US Office.

I liked how the Christmas special did the reverse of the main series by ending on a happy note. Yes, David Brent hitting it off with his date at the party was a little cheap, whereas at least the show justifies Dawn's abandoning Lee and rejoining Tim at the party, but allowing these characters to redeem themselves a little is perfect for Christmas. Now that I think about it, David Brent insists that he's actually a nice guy who was unfairly made to look like an butthole in the documentary, and maybe his successful first date with the Thai lady supports that claim. Plus, he does tell Chris Finch to frick off, and maybe that's supposed to justify his more charming display as well.

I didn't like The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret because it was just too absurd. Davis Cross jumping the barrier during the Remembrance Day parade and pissing on the memorial is just too unbelievable to be cringey.

And then you see the US remake and they've removed everything that made it good in the first place. It's so bad.
