>Water character is male. >Fire character is female

>Water character is male
>Fire character is female

Does this bug anyone else? I realize the way the Four Elements have been gendered over the years is a matter of dispute. After all, this is literally a discussion that is thousands of years old. Nonetheless, Fire has always struck me as a fundamentally "masculine" element, while Water, on the other hand, is more "feminine."

Was Pixar just trying to subvert expectations?

Making the girl be the Water one would've made her the most "submissive" between the two and we can't have that in a modern movie

This. Water may SEEM submissive, but fire is kind of SMOTHERED by water.

Not neccesarily, as long as there is fuel or oxygen the flames will burn.

Don't forget fire can evaporate water too.

This fire eventually burnt out, the ocean around it remained.

With this movie? Are you fricking kidding me? "Hot tempered girl" and "Go with the flow guy" is way more generic than you can possibly imagine.

the girl is "hot" the guy is "chill" yeah they didn't think that much for this one

In terms of Chinese mythology, Yang is considered warm, emissive and masculine while Yin is cool, absorbing and feminine. So in that sense you're right. I'm not sure if the western elemental tradition assigns such characteristics to the classical elements.

According to tarot fire and air are masculine while water and earth are feminine

Oh hey so THAT'S where Avatar got it from, Bryke weren't using Asian influences at all.

I realize Sokka is male, but Sokka is also a nonbender, so he doesn't really count for this thing.

This feels wrong, i know it's all pretty arbitrary, but iunno.

Why not? "Living" is a major distinguisher from other elements. Metal is the really weird one. Personally I like rolling both in with Earth.

Have you ever considered that you're an autist and they never even thought about It? Cause the actual reason is a lot simpler. Fire is a girl because the guy behind the movie is Asian and wanted to do something based of his experiences in a mixed race relationship, but didn't want to just make a self insert, so he gender swapped himself instead.

She's just a literal fiery female and he's literally just a go-with-the-flow guy. Don't fixate too much on the historical symbolism of the elements they're using. I guarantee they didn't think about it as hard as you.

Water is a feminine element, and fire is a masculine element, it's role reversal because they're a feminine guy, masculine girl couple.

They probably thought about swapping them but found it impossible to work around the inevitable jiggle physics.

No. The girl is just a hot-tempered tsundere which is an absurdly common character archetype. Temper issues are not a uniquely male thing, if anything "males are stoic, females can't control their emotions" is more in line with gender stereotypes.
