Does this bug anyone else? I realize the way the Four Elements have been gendered over the years is a matter of dispute. After all, this is literally a discussion that is thousands of years old. Nonetheless, Fire has always struck me as a fundamentally "masculine" element, while Water, on the other hand, is more "feminine."

This. Water may SEEM submissive, but fire is kind of SMOTHERED by water.
Not neccesarily, as long as there is fuel or oxygen the flames will burn.
Don't forget fire can evaporate water too.

In terms of Chinese mythology, Yang is considered warm, emissive and masculine while Yin is cool, absorbing and feminine. So in that sense you're right. I'm not sure if the western elemental tradition assigns such characteristics to the classical elements.

Have you ever considered that you're an autist and they never even thought about It? Cause the actual reason is a lot simpler. Fire is a girl because the guy behind the movie is Asian and wanted to do something based of his experiences in a mixed race relationship, but didn't want to just make a self insert, so he gender swapped himself instead.

She's just a literal fiery female and he's literally just a go-with-the-flow guy. Don't fixate too much on the historical symbolism of the elements they're using. I guarantee they didn't think about it as hard as you.

No. The girl is just a hot-tempered tsundere which is an absurdly common character archetype. Temper issues are not a uniquely male thing, if anything "males are stoic, females can't control their emotions" is more in line with gender stereotypes.
