>Worst reputation of almost any major movie ever
>Ruined the careers of everyone involved and broke Kevin Costner so hard he still shills for the movie to this day
>Morbid curiosity gets the best of me, especially after all the shitposts comparing this movie to Avatar 2 last year given I thought TWOW was shit
>Finished it less than an hour ago
>One of the most inconceivably horrible movies I've ever seen, isn't even funny bad, it's frustrating and infuriatingly awful, literally a moronic film
>Can't even remember the last time I saw a movie that bad, might be the worst movie I've ever seen
>TWOW and Pirates of the Caribbean look like works of God compared to this
How did this monument to all things awful in cinema even get produced?

It's pretty widely agreed these days it was exaggerated hyperbole for the most part, like Heavens Gate.
Any given year you've got a half dozen big budget Hollywood movies coming out that are significantly worse than this.
>Any given year you've got a half dozen big budget Hollywood movies coming out that are significantly worse than this.
No. I'd watch Avatar 1 and 2 with a car battery hooked up to my nuts than watch this thing again.
Although I'd call Avatar a bit worse I'm specifically talking about your Ant Mans, Aquamans, Fast Xs etc
The only thing Waterworld has over those movies is originality, and even that is a stretch because the movie is literally down syndrome Mad Max. I'd take a Marvel or F&F movie over this any day.
Then please do and kindly frick off.
I'm not saying those movies are good, I'm saying this movie is REALLY that bad.
avatar movies are above average tier adventure films
The first one is a 7/10 and is very good for what it is, the second one is a fricking 4 and is buoyed by being a gorgeous movie. Fricking awful characters, story, and dialogue. I regret watching it in theatres. Frick Spider in particular.
I disagree, I liked both and depending on my mood I prefer the second, Quaritch was amazing, the new Navi land was excellent world building and adventure, the action was great however sparse, the flashback to the humans descending on the woods destroying everything like Pandora is a play thing after the last movie was apocalypse kino, but really I just found Quaritch's story fascinating, scenes like the skull crushing were very existential, the flooding climax was also one of the best climaxes I saw in theater in 10 years
i refuse to believe a cognisant human being wrote this
Heaven's Gate is horrendous though. The director's cuts later on are better, but the original release is really over the top and indulgent. The negative reception wasn't exaggerated, it was just a bad release that was edited to be better over time.
Which version did you watch?
Like all Kevin Costner movies, the longest version is the best.
The action is great, the sets are beautiful, and the characters are cute
Original version
>Like all Kevin Costner movies, the longest version is the best.
Are you guys masochists? Kevin Costner is tied with John Wayne and William Shatner for the most overrated actor in history. Boring, expressionless, hammy, dull, distant. All the worst possible things you could ever want in a leading man personified consistently.
He's a terrible actor but he's involved in a lot of good movies, and his movies are best experienced with all the fixings.
You can't tell me there's no aspect of the film you didn't find interesting. The attack on the atoll was a great action scene.
They are being intellectually dishonest I believe. This is Mad Max on water.
It's a post-apocalyptic movie, but it has its own style to it as well
>This is Mad Max on water.
Yea, kino.
It's Mad Max without the lore, edge, humor, performances, characters, story, themes, or aesthetic. It's fricking awful, you oldgays are blinded by nostalgia.
I don't think Waterworld is the best movie, but it's not horrible. It has it's own identity, lore, themes and aesthetics.
>lore, themes
Please enlighten me. This is the worst worldbuilding I have ever seen in cinema, like sub-Cars.
The lore is in stuff like the mariners code, the mutants, traditions. I shouldn't need to explain how a movie presents its own lore to you if you actually pay any attention. The themes are industrialization vs ecology. The mariner represents the tie between the new world of humans adapting to their new environment and the smokers are the opposite, searching for dry land because their current life is unsustainable and are just looking for somewhere new for trees to chop down and ruin.
>The lore is in stuff like the mariners code, the mutants, traditions.
Why the frick would anybody in this world want to genocide fish-people? Wouldn't they want as many of them in the gene pool as possible given humanity is hopeless without such a mutation? That whole eugenics arc was moronic.
>The themes are industrialization vs ecology.
The smokers literally created a new human civilization while the mariner actively assaulted and destroyed the only functioning socio-political system on the planet. The. Smokers. Did. Nothing. Wrong.
>The mariner represents the tie between the new world of humans adapting to their new environment and the smokers are the opposite, searching for dry land because their current life is unsustainable and are just looking for somewhere new for trees to chop down and ruin.
Movie never implied nor stated any of this. Also, the whole premise that people forgot how to navigate is insanely moronic.
>Wouldn't they want as many of them in the gene pool as possible given humanity is hopeless without such a mutation?
Mutants constituted a new race, and nobody wants their race to die out
The movie never implied that, or even implied that they were a race. The Mariner was the only one we saw in the whole film.
They knew exactly what he was when they saw the gills, like they've had experience with mutants before
>Why the frick would anybody in this world want to genocide fish-people? Wouldn't they want as many of them in the gene pool as possible given humanity is hopeless without such a mutation? That whole eugenics arc was moronic.
The whole reason was actually explained in the Ulysses cut. The mariner is seen as an abomination because their new bible says something like man should not lay with fish or something like that. I dunno why it was removed from the theatrical cut.
>The smokers literally created a new human civilization while the mariner actively assaulted and destroyed the only functioning socio-political system on the planet. The. Smokers. Did. Nothing. Wrong.
They just live in an old battleship and are running low on resources because their life isn't sustainable and Hopper's character only controls them out of promise of finding land.
>Movie never implied nor stated any of this. Also, the whole premise that people forgot how to navigate is insanely moronic.
It does. Hopper promises his smokers that he will lead them to dry land where they "can cut down trees, burn gas and develop to our hearts content". Then there's the very obvious global warming message.
Earth is underwater, everyone lives on man made island fortresses, dry land is considered an unverified legend akin to the Lost City of Gold, dirt as well is immensely valuable as it's the only way to grow plants with vitamin C to fight off scurvy. Basic shit we'd consider trash is considered treasure due to scarcity. Human mutations are becoming more common to adapt to the new world.
The movie's got some cool stuff in it. Some of it I think is too obviously global warming satire, but there are things that stand on their own as interesting concepts.
Yeah, as concepts. However none of it is actually used to make an interesting or unique story or world, or even a world that works or has a sense of logic.
>The attack on the atoll was a great action scene.
Only in scale. The actual scene was impossible to follow and had so much going on it was incomprehensible and fricking stupid, it was the practical effects equivalent of a moronic overblown Marvel CG action scene.
>You can't tell me there's no aspect of the film you didn't find interesting.
Dennis Hopper and the Smokers were cool, I was cheering them on by the end of the movie because they literally built a new advanced human civilization that Kev smugly burned down like a homosexual.
Dude he was playing an antisocial icthyosapien. What did you expect?
He plays that charcater in fricking everything, just like John Wayne plays laughably macho meathead in every movie and William Shatner is always a laguhably hammed up overactor.
zoomer take
all costner movies are great
Please enlighten me. I love tons of other actors from his era but the circlejerk around him is insufferable. Just because somebody is leading in a good movie does NOT mean that said actor had a good performance or that the movie was good because of him. Dances with Wolves would have been a masterpiece if Patrick Swayze or Val Kilmer were cast instead, but instead it was a 7/10 at best because fricking plank was the leading man.
>Dances with Wolves
was a good movie but his voiceovers were awful
What a gay looking pose
good take imo, kevin is pretty dull
thats the chick from napoleon dynamite
I liked the world building. Thought it was cool.
>I liked the world building.
You haven't seen this piece of shit in 30 years if you think that.
This is one of those movies that everyone said sucked, then people started to say it was actually underrated and good, and then when I watched it it turned out it sucks. The Universal Studios show is kino though.
op is like a turn that won't flush
Did you at least watch the Youlissees Cut?
So is the postman good?
It would be good if you cut out like 50 minutes.
i quite liked it, but enjoyed the book a bit more. don't know if it's good or not because i have shit taste though
Postman and waterworld are both good movies
Go watch the movie and then play fallout new vegas for a while. Come back and let us know which one you preferred.
Daily reminder that postkino has 8% on rotten romatoes
I don't think it's a bad movie, it's a meh movie with a bloated budget.
>Ruined the careers of everyone involved
Think again. Dennis Hopper was a class act in everything he was in.
That's because he's Dennis Hopper. He was always in demand and no movie whether this or the Mario movie could refute that fact. He was sort of the American Christopher Lee in that regard.
this he alone made the movie an awesome experience, that and the design of the town
the trimaran was pretty cool. it even had a built in dickyjuicer
What the frick, was this from the extended version?
Nah, this is the opening scene of the movie lol. Pretty fitting intro.
He's literally me
I would have fricked her, what a moron.
I loved this movie when I was a kid and still don’t understand why it was so hated. The only reason I can think of his most people heard the bad news around the films and listened to the critics without developing their own opinion. As a lot of people normally do.
Did you saw the director's cut? Shit was almost unbearable towards the ending. Thankfully I didn't mind watching on 4x. I really wanted to like this movie.
No, just the normal cut. It was unbearably awful after they got out into the ocean after the Atoll attack.
I've watched the Ulysses cut, it has 45 min or so more than the normal cut. What the hell where they thinking? Shit is boring as getting stuck in the ocean, maybe that's what they where aiming for kek
Great movie op was filtered and is also attracted to other males.
Fricking Costner boomers are all over this thread. Don't you guys in your nursing homes have to go to sleep now?
Why the frick did you rope POTC in there? The original is a good movie and Depp carries
Oh yeah, the first two are fantastic and the fourth and fifth are very underrated imo, but overall the franchise has a mid connotation for a lot of people.
The fourth is a little underrated, the fifth doesn't even deserve to be watched
I get the feminist angle was cringe, but the movie looks fantastic and is probably the best-looking movie in the series apart from maybe Dead Man. Plus, Anton as the villain.
It looks like the whole thing was made on a greenscreen set and the entire budget went to getting Johnny Depp on board
I really only like the first one. Even if the plot makes zero sense johnny depp sells it
PAY-PER!
OP is a homosexual, Waterworld is pure Costner kino. The movie got bad press at the time but I'm pretty sure it turned a profit, and I've always thought it was underrated and deserved a sequel or two.
nah he's right and costner is a charisma void who can't act
Frick off boomer. Dances With Wolves would have been one of the best movies ever made if anyone other than him was leading, particularly Kilmer or Swayze.
Dances with Wolves is fine as it is, you have shit taste. Go back to watching 10 second tiktok videos, zoomie.
I'll enjoy myself some Asteroid City while looking down in sadness upon the rest of my generation, frankly
Surprised honestly. I always figured Cinemaphile of all boards would really like Water World. Ya know....for the casting.
Personally I have fond-ish memories of it as a boy. Havn't seen it in...20? years so, yeah no clue. Probably summer-side garbage.
Don't do it. Remember it only as a distant, pleasant memory and experience it as an insufferable, life-altering horror like I did.
Yeah I certainly have no plans. My only recent memory of it is that Resident Evil 4 map. Wouldn't mind knowing what that is all about....
I liked it. Not a masterpiece, but it's one of those kinds of movies that's easy to leave on during a lazy afternoon. A solid C+ to me.
It isn't a great movie but it definitely isn't as bad as you claim it to be.
You either have major autism or saw people shitting on it on reddit and decided to post your parroted opinion here.
I'm not lol. I've long wanted to see this movie given it's reputation(and the fact that I hate Kevin Costner with a passion and seeing him do Sci-fi is hilarious in theory), but I just watched it tonight and it was horrific. My brain was raped by this movie.
>not posting jack black smeat hoarder
I was just about to say lol; I saw that guy and thought to myself "Holy shit, is that Jack Black", and sure enough, it was. I almost liked the movie for a second.
This movie was intentional sabotaged in every way possible by the people who wanted movies to go in the direction of CGI over practical sets.
This movie was the litmus test for big budget practical sets and when they tanked in the media and the resulting terrible reputation cemented future directors and producers to go down the terrible CGI path that has lead us to the garbage we see today.
you'll notice these movies still cost the same to make somehow despite being glorified game cut scenes
It would make a pretty awesome open world single player video game imho. Like legend of zelda: wind waker. But not tooney, and rated M
It'd be like Sable mixed with Sea of Thieves
> >One of the most inconceivably horrible movies I've ever seen, isn't even funny bad, it's frustrating and infuriatingly awful, literally a moronic film
I tried to like it, but the acting is awful. Its not one character, its all of them. so bad.
That scene at the end where they find the land was the most moronic scene in cinema history to the point to where it broke my brain.
it doesn't make a lot of sense in shear water amount, even if all the glaciers +Antarctica +the arctic melted it still wouldn't have been high enough to reach the implied 29,000+ feet or so the ending showed.
Maybe should have said there was a comet that hit the earth with a glancing strike, added a lot of water or something idk
ought to be a bunch of dead climbers skeletons scattered around, think "green boots" is still chillin up there somewhere, should of given him a cameo propped up on a rock somewhere.
I’ve never seen the movie, but wouldn’t the altitude frick with the oxygen in blood? There’s a reason people can only spend 5 to 10 mins at the summit.
Apply literally any logic to this movie and it falls apart and gives you an aneurysm
Are you one of those autistic people that can't just take something at face value and always has to have an autismo fit when one of his inane questions remains unanswered?
This movie has worse worldbuilding than Cars and takes itself completely seriously all the time, I recommend you see it for yourself to witness the worst worldbuilding I've ever seen for a movie with this massive of a budget and star power.
Anon the movie came out 28 years ago, it might be time to let it go
I'm a Zoomer and just saw it for the first time, it made me cringe and fume into a black hole. I've never been buck broken by a movie before, but here I am now.
Not that anon but only non-dramatized reconstructed documentaries give me joy.
The sea level makes it so they can breathe normally. Because it rose so too did the atmosphere. And going by Flood by Stephen Baxter, there could be subterranean pockets of water that could amount to a greater volume of water than is on the surface currently.
No it wasn't, Terminator 2 and Titanic showed that you could spend up the ass on effects and still make bank. I still highly enjoyed Waterworld though and would also enjoy it if it were made into an open world game.
>enjoy it if it were made into an open world game.
Have you ever played Sable? It's like Waterworld but with a desert instead.
Water World is like a really good kids movie for adults if that make any sense
Dennis Hopper never misses
dull, boring and bleak
not the best combo
It's mediocre.
If you think it's particularly bad you haven't seen enough movies, simple as.
I'm just saying for an original movie back then with a budget as huge as it did, it's horrendous. Like, it's almost Pluto Nash levels of awful.
redditors and twittergays
eh i enjoyed it
these
Frick you. Waterworld is a great movie.
What if Mad Max but the ocean?
Waterworld is not good, but it's still better than every piece of MCU garbage with the possible exception of Iron Man 1.
I liked it.
Why's it bad?
if you dont like waterworld you're a homosexual
im not even going to attempt to be logical or intelligent about it lol
when I watch drama series and movies I always end up gravitating to one of the old men characters and rooting for them, happened in Sopranos, Succession, few others that escape me atm. But I watched Yellowstone and I tried to do the same with Costner but he just wasn't sellin it for me
>he didn't watch the extended cut
NGMI
curiosity
You are such a fricking zoomer influenced by others opinions you couldn't just watch the movie for yourself
Honestly I just hope you get mugged and or stabbed
we didn't have screens back then to take away boredom we only had sci-fi. And sci-fi writers were gods in the creative world because cool kids would emulate the lead. So just like now, if any sci-fi failed to gain cultural relevancy it was thought to be the fault of not enough production budget to realize it. See boy and his dog. Water World is just that doubled down on with a bigger budget and trying to make the best bits their own before John Carpenter does.
