Stop listening to hysterical people on the internet. Removing a show from service =/= writing it off altogether.
WBD is either adopting a rotating content strategy, or licensing this to another streamer, or licensing it to linear channels, or even preparing a sales package. WBD needs cash just like Disney right now. That cash needs to come from outside of WBD.
If it was simply removing it from Max, they wouldn't have deleted the trailer off YouTube.
>recoupment of costs >they can't just write it off X years later
they've likely been deferring the taxes from 201X and will consider it a capital loss because all the reshoots cost a frickload and proving it generated subscriber growth/generated any revenue is literally impossible (because the streaming model doesn't work) and then put it through the proverbial crusher just like a pallet of Ezra Miller action figures. Companies destroy physical media all the time, but the ability to "destroy" digital media is some "The producers" tier frickery and something the IRS needs to start slapping corporate penises over.
The simple fact is having the server space devoted to let say 20,000 people concurrently stream the Snyder cut burns a hole in their pocket, yet at the same time if people actually did watch it the data per streamer for 4k video would be like .12-.20c an hour through alphabet, cloudflare, or amazon. Cable being both ad supported, service provider paid for, and having flat overhead worked. Streaming doesn't. None of these companies understood the "Netflix model" of making a bet with the consumer that they wouldn't leave The Office on 24 hours a day because they could but still pay for the idea.
No seriously, how the frick does this shit even work and how is it legal >Yeah US government, this product we released 3 years ago? We're going to say it's not being used anymore so pay us the 300 million in production costs right now

I’m so sick of you zoomers thinking they can do this with everything and not understanding why some unreleased and old latent projects were able to be written off.
It’s not, zoomers just don’t understand memes aren’t real life.
It's entirely about residuals, and this particular move will probably only work once since it's so blatantly scummy and industry contracts have always been written with the idea of employees being able to survive off residuals between jobs.
Frick the Snyderverse, but streaming services removing their content so they can get a tax writeoff and avoid paying residuals is garbage. There should be laws against it.
Leaving up old content is extremely unprofitable. It isn't free, every single time it is viewed about a hundred checks go out. It's only worth money if it attracts new subscribers.
Then why the frick does every single media company think it can have its own subscription service when it's obvious none of them really are capable of making money at this game on their own?
Netflix has literally always operated at a loss with outsider money, HBO Max (frick just calling it "Max") can't stop deleting shit for tax writeoffs, Amazon Prime's content is literally just a vanity project for the rest of Amazon, and none of the other services are even worth talking about. The whole of streaming was clearly an endeavor that apparently Wall Street and techbros pushed Hollywood into when it's obvious there's no actual money to be made here given how hard it is to maintain.
The only major studio that doesn't have one is Sony. They just license their stuff out and make loads. Paramount and Universal should do that. WB and Disney are the only one enough IP to use to make these things worth it. Also, why isn't Max called WarnerMax?
Didn't he go way over budget and end up costing WB millions on rewrites and filming new scenes on what was supposed to be a re edit? No shit they're tossing it out, I'm surprised they never sued him.
Yes they wasted an extra 70 million to shot moronic sequelbait scenes like the Knightmare and Martian Manhunter
If not for Barbie next week, Warners would have filed for bankruptcy by the end of the year
You're insane. AT&T was the moneybags that made failures like this survivable.
Discovery/WB is 40 billion in the hole and NOTHING is making money at all.
Its amazing how they keep throwing money at bad movies to "improve" them, twice for JUSTice League, and then another pile at The Flush.
Goddamnit no! No! NO! It’s the superior version of the movie! Get rid of the other one if you need to make a few buck, you fricking hack israelites! Damnit!
Modern America is built on the concept of hate, we no longer have solidarity for each other because racism and sexism have been killed, and as such now all that's left is hate for everyone, your own race, other races, corporations, people against those corporations, and as such now it's less about what might benefit you more so as to what might harm others, which is why people are siding with big Hollywood now instead of striking actors or writers, because it's no longer 2008 and most people hate them as much as the executives.
We should have been aware that racism and sexism and bigotry in general was a societal pillar that when tumbled would lead to societal degradation like religion.
I do, yes there was limited solidarity, but there was something, now that we live in the modern world with nothing to bind us we inevitably devolve for hate not just for selective groups but for everyone.
Pretty sure they had the music license to "Hallelujah" for a limited time and had to remove it when it expired...AGAIN.
They did this same thing back in 2020 when they didn't license the song ahead of time and had the trailer with the song removed for a few days until they worked out a deal with the musician.
>Pretty sure they had the music license to "Hallelujah" for a limited time and had to remove it when it expired...AGAIN.
Why did they even use that in the first place?
That shit is legit cringe. The fact that they used that song in a superhero movie is just stupid. Zack Snyder is an egdy tryhard and he ruined DC movies for the foreseeable future.

This is what happens when you celebrate prematurely.
So I'm confused about write offs. In the past TV write offs just effected broadcasting. You could still sell the show on DVD and digital, it could still stream. Beware the Batman and Green Lantern for example were both written off yet streamed and had releases after. Megas was too and it had a digital release and appeared in Fusionfall. Are movies different? Why are modern TV write offs also disappearing?
I was scrolling around on my Facebook burner the other day and I noticed the Snydergays were all either Indian, Middle Eastern, or white metalgays. All worthless and not worth listening to.

This. Perception of the KK series is that it's about people learning martial arts pretty normally, and this is correct. Perception of Iron Fist was that he magically stepped in and saved Asians with his mastery of their knowledge, which is of course wrong but also wasn't really smacked down as incorrect and racist.

Snydergays can't even stomach comic Superman at this point. They want their gayass godman.
What was the point of releasing this after so long and so many movies made?
This is like if Marvel released today a version of Ironman 3 but with the Seven Rings with a real Mandarin and Fing Fang Foom and A.I.M. with M.O.D.O.K. and Monica Rappaccini

I work at Warner-Discovery. The Snyder cut of JL isn't being "written off". It's being pulled from Max so it can be syndicated.
The recut of JL was a huge hit for HBO Max and the DVD sold very well. The Joss Whedon version is going to be removed from TV syndication and replaced with the Snyder version early next year; it will have it's debut on HBO January 2024 and after an exclusivity window of about a year or year and a half (depending on the ratings it gets), it will end up airing on TBS and TNT and other cable channels.
I'd bet you six dollary doos they pull a Netflix "Hateful Eight" and repurpose it into "episodes" that can be shown all day or shown as a month long "event"

This is so dishonest and ignores the realities of the release and how big of a frick up it was, it was supposed to be a product to go with the second part of Max global realese, it got delayed and the movie came out one month before MAX was available in Asia, Latinoamerica and most European markets. The movie was distributed by Netflix and HBO Go (a service that came packeged with cable) in a few European countries, the rest of the world had to digitally rent it or go for PPV, the movie failed to attract subscribers in those markets because everyone had already seen the movie. It was a frick up by HBO and WB, a massive failure,a big name movie as exclusive content for 70 million is really cheap, compared to the godzilla movie where WB had to pay legendary 200 million for the rights. The Snydercut was financially viable, but was massive frick up for HBO Max and WB, it was supposed to be a trojan horse for their service in the global market, if they had just delayed it one month it could had worked.
