>We didnt know [Season 5 would be the end].

>“We didn’t know [Season 5 would be the end]. We finished shooting in November of [2022] and then found out around the New Year — and we can’t say enough of our gratitude to CBS Studios and Paramount Plus for giving us the opportunity to go back and shoot some additional days, because we felt like we really then got to wrap up the series. Season 5 will feel like a satisfying journey.

>Then, we were able to kind of do a little bit extra to wrap up the show as a whole, and we’re so grateful for that. So when we got to go back and shoot that material we knew going in that those few days were going be the last days — and it was kind of cool, because we got to go in knowing that and really just appreciate being there; appreciate being with one another.

>We got to say goodbye on the sets, which was just a really special and bittersweet thing. So it was wonderful to get to do that.”

only seasons 4 and 5 are shorter than a half season of tng, and then 5 since s2 of tng is 22 eps instead of the standard 26
              you are right otherwise

pilots are tests. TNG DS9 VOY and ENT were fully picked up before they started production

star trek isnt for casuals and never will be. nobody really appreciates it until theyve had it on in the background for 10 or 20 years.
so if you want to get young people into star trek you need to pump out 25 self contained episodes a year for 15 years and wait for them to become old people.

      >developing a theory that the S31 special will be little more than an extended STD final episode
it's a spinoff movie that is apparently tying into multiple series, from tos to tng to std, because the guardian of space and time took captain ching chong, remember it was supposed to be a miniseries first before it was trimmed down to a film

If it's so popular, why was it cancelled?

Perhaps a better term is "completed". Star Trek: Discovery has achieved the milestone of being in production longer than any other Trek series, and now it's time to move on and tell other stories.

But don't worry, our DISCO friends we met along the way will still show up in the next great New Trek series, Star Trek: Star Fleet Academy.

std was canned because paramount+ never made any gains on it, they also severely limited its budget and viewership dropped after cbs all access merged, which std was a flagship series for. the only reason spock was brought into season 2 was to boost viewer numbers, otherwise it wouldn't have made it past season 3 realistically. also cope and seethe about it's production length, the last two seasons were delayed due to covid and strikes

either way, season 4 is how the series should have ended. everyone lives happily ever after and michael goes out having literally saved the entire galaxy from another galaxy and still gets her love interest. season 5's plot being a fricking treasure hunt will not top an extragalactic threat.

its not a film. p+ isnt allowed to make trek films. its a special. same thing with the southpark episodes they are withholding from HBO. specials so they cant be sued for breaking contracts.

          Anonymous

it's the equivalent of a tv movie. of course p+ is allowed to make trek films, they own the ip. they can't make films in pre-existing series like tng and such but any p+ content they can and will make films for. also they have no contract to break with hbo since next year all of south park will be moved over to p+, the specials are just to hook viewers in. once they gain full ownership you bet we'll get more.

there was never an audience. the idea was to use the trek brand to anchor CBS All Access but they did such a terrible job that it killed CBS All Access and forced paramount to try again with Paramount+ but its so bad they can barely keep their subscription numbers up even though its free with several other services and they will give you a free month every month if you try to cancel it. cant even get people to watch on youtube and pluto for free.

short treks don't count, they're the same as "webisodes" and are just little fluff meant to fill gaps and help you bide time between releases. strange new worlds is a proper spinoff. the section 31 movie is a spinoff. that's it.

Star Trek: Star Fleet Academy. That's three -- and Short Trek is open to debate. A number of episodes tied directly into the DISCOverse and even used DISCO sets for much it.

nah nothing is in the works except for a supposed discovery movie. star trek 4 keeps getting started up and then dropped and the cast no longer wants to do it since they were screwed out of their pay the first time around. the rumor is a std and snw movie, but iirc the snw movie was approved for p+ not theaters, and it remains to be seen whether or not the std movie will go into theaters (doubtful). also quentin's movie was dropped since he started working on the film critic and his idea was never really taken seriously anyway, and that crossover will never be approved beyond a 5 minute non-canon special

Somebody cut off the head before it comes back to life. Then remove the heart and feed it to a pack of rabid dingos that have been starved for weeks. Then incinerate the body and shoot the ashes straight at Jupiter. The massive radiation from the extreme magnetic field should kill any last vestiges of life before it falls into the gravity well and is completely annihilated at the molecular level.

Nothing in this show is canon. Not a single second of it.

Only the IP owner decides what's canon. You want a say, buy the property.

I'm honestly surprised the showrunners thought they could keep this going. Star Trek Discovery was only created when the economy was good, and as a flagship show for CBS streaming service.

Now that the streaming service is gone and the economy is in the toilet, did they really think they could keep going? Star Trek Discovery was very expensive to make, and every episode is filled with high end special effects. Paramount is doing terribly when it comes to finances.

The showrunners for Discovery should have known better.
