The people in this show essentially work for the government. They get sent out by a court after someone has a debt that they refuse to pay back.
The process for this is actually lengthy and usually involved at least two courts. First the person who owes money is taken to court, and the court orders them to pay it back. If after this they still refuse, it can be taken to a higher court which if no agreement is made will result in these goons being sent out.
I don't think they can just break into your home, and there is a list of stuff they cannot take. But once they've been sent, they can come and take anything they need to in order to repay any debt a person owes.
I believe however that not allowing them to do their job, or actively trying to prevent them from doing it is classed as contempt of court and can actually result in prison time.
It's a shitty job that attracts scum, but to get these people knocking on your door you also have to be scum. You essentially are a thief who has borrowed money and refused multiple times to pay it back in any form at all and this is the last ditch effort to recoup that debt.
I can understand how some people can bury their heads in the sand when they're juggling young kids and being unable to work, but most people at the mercy of these dudes are those scummy fricks
They do not get sent out unless it's an absolute last resort. You can literally go to court, agree to repay your debt at a rate of £1 a month, and that is it. You'll be paying £1 a month for the rest of your life, but it will stop these people being sent out.
You've got to be actively trying to get these people sent out. You have to take out a loan over a certain amount and absolutely refuse every single opportunity to repay it for years and years.
My sister is the type to do this sort of thing. She wouldn't ever engage with them.
