Dipshit, it's because live action adaptations are necessarily created differently than duh favorite animu that gets rabid fans' panties in a wad. Live action adaptations are rarely ever good when treated exactly like anime. That's how you wind up with all the actors looking like stupid fking cosplayers instead of a reimagining the works better for live action.

Replied to the wrong post and misinterpreted them entirely. Well done.

      Anonymous

He's only in like 1 scene in the entire show, he wasn't the problem.
The issues were too many to count. The biggest to me was how they utterly failed to make any of the characters even a bit like their anime counterparts. Spike goes from a mysterious mercenary to a quipping moron. Jet gets a mixed daughter and white ex wife (of course he does!) for no reason. Faye's a dyke, again, for no reason. Julia goes from a tragic victim of the syndicate to wanting to run it an hurt people for money. Vicious is just moronic. Even the transgender character from the original anime is reduced to a side show freak and stripped of their internal struggle that made them interesting.
Plus it looks like they shot it at Nicolodeon studios with those moronic outfits and oversaturated color.
I honestly don't think they could have fricked it up harder if they tried.

It is good, you dont want the same stories rehashed over and over. The problem with hollyisraelite is the people who make these things arent fans and therefore dont understand what the ESSENCE of the source material is. There are certain key aspects of any IP that are what people like about it, the other shit they can be flexible on but the KEY ASPECTS of it cant be changed, and every actual fan knows what those aspects are, or it isnt the same fricking thing they like, it is something you are puppetering with its skin on it

The Japanese dub trailer puts a filter on the bad line delivery and writing. It makes it more tolerable which is why Japanese audio is the only way to go when watching anime because it distracts you from how bad the dialogue actually is.

Yeah, essence is really the key component. You can even change characters, but need to keep the essence in tact.
Conan the Barbarian is a good example of this. It's not a great adaptation of Robert E. Howard's Conan as a character, but it is great adaptation of his style and the world he created. So while not necessarily a great Conan movie, it is a great Howard movie and capturing this was something the sequels and reboots have failed to achieve.

So while not necessarily a great Conan movie, it is a great Howard movie and capturing this was something the sequels and reboots have failed to achieve.

I usually point to this as an example of an adaptation, or in this case a translation, that is not a *literal* translation but it is a *true* one, and the kind of 'essence' that adaptations should aim to achieve (though of course this is not always possible):

        >In his 1869 French rendering of Alice in Wonderland, Henri Bué found a uniquely felicitous way to translate a pun. Here’s the original:
        >‘If everybody minded their own business,’ the Duchess said in a hoarse growl, ‘the world would go round a deal faster than it does.’
        >‘Which would not be an advantage,’ said Alice … ‘Just think what work it would make with the day and night! You see the earth takes twenty-four hours to turn round on its axis –‘
        >‘Talking of axes,’ said the Duchess, ‘chop off her head.’

        >Bué couldn’t reproduce the pun using the French word for ax (hache), but he came up with this:
        >‘Si chacun s’occupait de ses affaires,’ dit la Duchesse avec un grognement rauque, ‘le mond n’en irait que mieux.’
        >‘Ce qui ne serait guère avantageux,’ dit Alice … ‘Songez à ce que deviendraient le jour et la nuit; vous voyez bien, la terre met vingt-quatre heures à faire sa révolution.’
        >‘Ah! vous parlez de faire des révolutions!’ dit la Duchesse. ‘Qu’on lui coupe la tête!’

Or, with some minor artistic license on my part: "Ah! Speaking of revolutions," said the Duchess, "cut off her head!"

        >In The Astonishment of Words, Victor Proetz writes, “Here Bué — with a stroke of wizardry and judgment which, in this instance, is not translation by word, but translation by change of word — has instantaneously transformed a witty English idea in its entirety into a perfectly parallel, equally witty French idea. And when ‘the Duchess’ changes into ‘la Duchesse,’ the axe, by association, becomes a guillotine.”

No I agree with that, but it's not 1:1 and the most marketable animated shows are going to have elements that just don't work in live action. Gurren lagan, one piece, dragon ball, all work BECAUSE they're animated. You can make the argument for stuff like parasite, or LotGH but it's obvious which ones I'm talking about. Or I feel like it should be, but they keep fricking it up.

Tintin wasn't live action, it was an uncanny looking CGI movie. Still pretty good for what it was though.

One Piece leans heavily into cartoon physics. It's like trying to make live action Animaniacs.

I can't imagine the live action not triggering the uncanny valley effect, and be off putting because of it.

Something like the Masks does show it can be done in live action as well, it's just a question of how and in what kind of a movie. Hell, even Who Framed Roger Rabbit showed there's no real obstacle in mixing live action and cartoon physics, it's just a question how to do it.

A live action LotGH would actually have the potential to be better than the anime(which I feel is kind of sloppy in places anyway, animation's kind of stiff, direction is kind of dry, far too many characters who look almost exactly the same). Just having some good actors on screen would bring that whole thing to life a lot more.
Code word there being "good" of course.

A lot of talk about the Bebop remake here atm. Here's the review I did last year, if anyone is interested/hasn't seen it already (warning: bong accent): https://youtu.be/Erb2x5SQHd8

              >fans are expecting you to be true to the source material
Well, yes, but the implication there is that they really wanted to please the fans and were just trying something new, and unfortunately it didn't work out. Bullshit. They deliberately ruined just about every aspect of the source material, failed to tell coherent, let alone compelling, stories, and treated the whole thing as a vehicle for leftist propaganda/demoralisation. All while yammering about their immense love and respect for the original, as they always do.

              >A live action LotGH
Please, God, no. You think Hollywood could present a mostly Germanic, non-democratic reformist regime that's not pure evil? Or honestly depict the corruption and hypocrisies of a failing democracy, with the criminalisation of free speech, the outlawing of protests, the use of war as a means of retaining power etc? Or permit any show to feature a shadowy group of merchants secretly pulling the strings and benefitting from pitting nations against each other?

Part of me kind of does want to see it, because it could be hilarious. But somehow I doubt they'll ever do it, because it would draw more eyes to the original - and the changes they'd have to make would be glaring.

I don't think there's a single popular manga that would be worse to make into live action.
I mean shit, going through the list of manga with >100 million copies sold (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_manga) and Naruto is the only one that comes close. I would argue the movement in Attack on Titan would be very hard to transfer into live action too.

Live action adaptations are rarely ever good when treated exactly like anime. That's how you wind up with all the actors looking like stupid fking cosplayers instead of a reimagining the works better for live action.

Trying to adapt cartoon physics to real life always results in cringe, but at least Cowboy Bebop wasn't full of too much animeshit outside of Edward nonsense so it could've been adapted without too much cringe if it had've been in the hands of competent creators. One Piece is the epitome of animeshit and there is absolutely no one to adapt to live action or even CGI without it looking like complete and utter garbage. At least livea action Bebop had a potential audience, I have no idea who the frick they think is going to like One Piece But Without Any Of The Anime Appeal.

Why has Netflix not figured out that when you try to do a live-action version of an anime it just comes off as cringe?

You lose the weeb audience because they specifically want to watch a superior 2d cartoon version of your subject matter. You lose the normie audience because they don't get or want to get anime. I don't want to watch this because I can just watch anime instead, and my boomer mom doesn't want to watch it because she hates anime. Who is this shit for? There's no target audience.

The only way you could maybe pull this off is to cast 100% Japanese actors who can actually pull off anime mannerisms IRL because they inadvertently do it all day in an unironic fashion. When you cast poos and whites it just doesn't feel right.

You can't dress up an actual human like Luffy or Spike and be 100% accurate when it comes to the costume and then have them do ridiculous CGI anime shit in every scene. It wrecks any immersion you might go into it with. Either do a dark, gritty, realistic version or just do a cartoon. Even Snyder DC movies don't look as ridiculous as this and make an effort to not make the costumes as colorful and cartoonish because at least they know what they're playing with.

Could you imagine someone trying to play an intimidating live action Lex Luthor if he were dressed up in this fruity little number?

I personally don't like 1:1 adaptations. I think there are segments in anime that are possibly so well done that keeping to the original for the most part is preferable, but there are other segments and even parts of the story that scream for a different approach. Live action and animation are so different that there are styles that are more suited to each medium which makes adaptations interesting. I enjoyed the Cowboy Bebop adaptation for what it is. I enjoyed the other angles from which the story was told. I'm less likely to enjoy an adaptation that's a copy/paste of the original despite the original having existed for decades yet somehow inspires no originality or nuance with a new adaptation. Try to be original, compelling, take the concepts already introduced in the original, and try to tell the story from a different perspective while keeping to what makes the original so appealing.

People bag on the frumpy Hispanic and grandpa spike and whatnot but this is what gets me. It cannot functionally be anything close to the actual story because that doesn't make any sense. It is so baffling and I know the decision to do it came entirely from a whim from one of those c**ts "uhhh this Julia woman kinda seems like a damsel, frick those sexist pigs she's gonna be a girlboss!"
and that's the entirety of their storyplanning and thought process

Oldboy is based on a manga, but it changes almost everything from the manga. It sounds to me like this is a case of whether you're making an adaptation for the same audience as the original work, or if you're trying to make an adaptation for a new audience.

I love Cowboy Bebop and I don't care if they're faithful in content, they just have to follow the general spirit of it and propose something fresh. The adaptation was poorly written, it's comically terrible at times, acting was way over the top and they seem to have completely missed the nuances of the origina material.
In comparaison Foundation is also pretty bad, but the original Empire storyline is excellent, because it mixes the original content with some new ideas like cloning which isn't the books.
We just expect things to not suck in general really.

      >I don't care if they're faithful in content, they just have to follow the general spirit of it and propose something fresh
Yeah, that's called fanfiction. No one is fricking interested in on-screen fanfiction unless it was building on the established universe or like adding scenes to express a clearer/better idea of the themes the episode would demonstrate. That would be cool. Like, a flashback scene showing the Heavy Metal Queen and her legendary bounty hunter husband for context. Shit like that.

        Anonymous

Oh, I remember. They took the prominent aspect of Faye Valentine everyone with eyes and a brain can see and insisted that it would be impossible to replicate. You know, for all those stunts that Faye is known for doing. And because, god, it'd be impossible for her to even MOVE in such a "goofy" looking outfit. Then you point out that cosplayers knock that shit out of the park without multi-million dollar budgets to back them and you get a ingenuousness "argument" thrown back at you in the form of
        >Well, cosplayers aren't actors!
        Or the equally moronic
        >Well, try doing *stunts* in cosplay!
...It's articles of clothing and an application of make-up with styled hair. I feel like these morons call basic exercise "stunts" to try and legitimize it but it's all moronic. So, so moronic.

She didn't even do any stunts in the show. The only reason they even had her character is so they could lesbian her up with an ORINIGAL CHARACTER DONUT STEEL.

            Anonymous

Exactly. Faye was turned into a fricking fanfiction character. The morons who "adapted" this series didn't like how Faye is essentially a pretty mid bounty hunter who uses her wiles and charms and blatant sex appeal to open doors Spike and the others can't. She isn't this super capable girlboss and if she was she wouldn't look like that and she wouldn't be in this fricking show. Just fat, stupid, insecure and probably homosexual writers looking at a character packaged in a way they can't compete with or identify as so they drag it down.
            >W-well I like Faye but I look and act nothing like her but I share her traits of general incompetence and being overwhelmed by shit! But she's so pretty and stand out so she SHOULD be better! Yeah, her talent should match how amazing she is! And...and men see that and she doesn't even HAVE to show her body off to get their attention! And--
It's just a bunch of cope.

The idea that a character has one costume, is probably the part of anime that the adaptations should be getting away from anyway. It's too "cartoony" and makes it look like cosplay.
Spike in reality wouldn't wear the same blue suit and yellow shirt every day. You should have a variety of outfits, that still evoke the personality of the character (the Super Mario Bros movie, of all things, actually does a good job of this. Mario still feels like Mario, even when he's dressed nothing like Mario for most of the movie).
And that, funnily enough, is also something they fricked up in the live action show.

            Anonymous

            >is probably the part of anime that the adaptations should be getting away from anyway
Nope. The characters and how they appear are iconographic. You don't just fricking change that willy nilly because of some arbitrary "b-but it's silly!" argument. People wear the same shit day after day if no one bothers them and they dont' give a shit. Past a certain age my dad wore like the same 2-3 basic maintenance jumpsuits every day until he died and didn't give a frick if people mistook him for not holding a mop. Everything you're saying is a conversation that shouldn't take place in these adaptations. It's not about introducing the mundanity of reality to fantasy.

            >(the Super Mario Bros movie, of all things, actually does a good job of this. Mario still feels like Mario, even when he's dressed nothing like Mario for most of the movie)
That movie fricking sucked. Mario and Luigi were embodied on screen in name only.

I would say Firefly was a much better "Bebop in live action", because it knew to focus on tone, and not autistic costuming details.
The basic outline of Spike's character is he's a cool, aloof guy, who dresses stylishly, but kind of downbeat. That's what you need. You don't need it to be THE same suit in every episode. You also need the actor not to be 50.

                Anonymous

                >You don't need it to be THE same suit in every episode.
It's iconic and part of who he is. It should be featured prominently until/unless he has to change suits to infiltrate a place. Aside from that, tough, taking an outfit from anime character is like stripping the fricking suit off Batman. You don't do that. You don't try to *find* reasons and excuses to take them out of the shit that fans associate him with.

Also because women are threatened by depictions of female characters who are prettier than they are if they can't immediately co-opt said character for their own narratives or at least self-identify with her ("I could be her if I wanted to bother with hair and makeup! Honest! The 350lbs of fat changes nothing!"). That and they think the idea that men might appreciate a pretty girl on screen who doesn't fall into one of those categories personally offensive and threatening.
