How long has it been since you watched the show? Aang in the early episodes was vocally all about visiting all sorts of places in his journey. It wasn't till he reached the air temple that his roadtrip buzz got dented.
Sokka and Katara already told them they were dead before he got to the air temple.
I feel like you are undercutting this statement than you are letting on. Of course they'd be dead because he was frozen in an iceberg for 100 years. This is like a time traveler being told their love ones are dead and the world has changed since they've been gone by a total stranger. They know deep down that it's true but they got to see it for themselves to accept it in their heart and mind. It'd be boring storytelling if they just accepted it logically that 100 years did past for them instead feeling the weight of how much time really past by visiting a place to knew in the past so well.
And? The point is Katara and Sokka pester Aang about going straight to the temple, but Aang starts dotting the map with all the cool places he wants to visit. It's the whole reason they go to Kyoshi in the first place.
Yeah but they're idiots who miss the point. Which is why they also want to directly show the Airbender genocide on screen because they're worried people might not realize what happened when Aang gets to the temple and finds a bunch of skeletons.

That seems more to me like a live-action One Piece situation where the tone feels like it was meant to be for all ages but then there are brief moments showing some gore or a lot of blood splatter, almost slightly beyond what you'd expect from a PG-13 series.
