Except Tolkien’s work was entirely focused on creating a myth cycle for prehistoric England and Western Europe, which were not known for their vibrant multiethnic populations. It breaks the verisimilitude of the setting. Further, with his emphasis on the classical form of mythology yes, men most often were the heroes. Either accept that Tolkien’s work is by definition a white male fantasy and appreciate it for the skill and thought put into the worldbuilding, or engage with something else.

I'm a complete normie who has never seen any Lord of the Rings movie and have never read any Tolkien. I pretty much know nothing about any of it, other than it's fantasy.
Can someone explain to me in layman's terms why Rings of Power is so shit? I only want to know out of sheer curiosity. I don't actually plan on watching the show, though I will watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy and/or read the books if you explain why they are so great.
Wokeshit aside it's just a bad adaptation. The 750 million USD make it pretty, hiding how much of a C tier show it really is
The show has 4 completely separate plotlines. Other than maybe one of these 4 plots, they are intentionally slower paced. The 'main' plot has 4 subplots, two of the other storylines are made of 2 subplots and the final one is guaranteed to have no impact to the overall story and was literally admitted by the writers that it was only added as a nostalgia hook. On top of all this, some of these subplots literally spend an entire episode with scenes that have the characters and their circumstances not change at all from the start of the episode to the end of it, making the whole thing feel like nothing is happening.
The overall pacing seems to be the main problem. Add in a couple just plain genuine writing frickups/plotholes and it ends up that I can't imagine anyone actually considering this good. Even the people that like it don't say it's good, just something that's fine to pass the time.
All of this too is universal criticism that will bother any audience member, no matter if they are a casual viewer or a critic. Approaching this as a fan of the IP you also can add in the total lore butchery, the completely different characters, and the fact that the changes they've already done have guaranteed that future events in the show will be completely different/nonsensical compared to the books.

I find it surprisingly full of clichés and overused tropes that I wouldn't think anyone would still be doing (seriously) in this day and age. I mean, in lesser shows or capeshit crap you expect those things, but this show was supposed to be a serious attempt at being, not only good, but cinematical and deserving of the Tolkien brand. And it failed spectacularly, more so than I could have expected.
It's just bad in every way too much to discuss. Some characters fast travel around the map like Elrond and Celebrimbor when they go from the elf city to the dwarf one. They talk about going there and they're literally just there in the next scene. Sometimes characters fast travel sometimes they don’t. The scale of the world is poorly done like season 8 of GOT.
The main character Galadriel is completely changed from her book character of a wise and kind, magical elf. She is rude to literally everyone in the show, constantly threatens to kill everyone even her allies. She acts like a rebellious teen despite being thousands of years old. She defeats trolls single handedly and constantly shows off how powerful she is beating up multiple men at the same time and showing off while she does it. And yet she spends every episode goes around begging for an army to fight Sauron. It just makes no sense. Why does she need an army if she is that powerful? It's like Superman going around begging for help. The changes to her character were obviously made for propaganda and feminism reasons not for good storytelling. The powerful waman! She climbs mountains with just a knife. Her fellow soldiers are all useless and lag behind despite also being thousand year old warriors. They are useless in fights and don't even get a single hit. They have no purpose other than to make the main character look more competent and powerful. Galadriel goes back and forth between being knowledgeable and not knowing basic shit like where she is being taken by the Numenorians.
Halbrand gets captured wearing nothing but rags but somehow has money to buy food for an entire bar to win them over despite no employment, being an outcast, and still wearing rags. Elrond doesn't even bend over when going through the dwarves secret door. He just knocks on the wall at his own height level and somehow the magical door made by dwarves is tall enough for him. Amazon bragged about their epic 25-million viewer premier (which, for the effort they put into promoting it, and depending on how loosely they are defining a "view", was expected) but they don't publicly disclose viewership numbers and I've seen zero shill articles where Amazon bragged that it stayed high.

Why didn't they brag about how many new subscribers they got like they did with TNF, which they also spent a billion, but for 11 years, where all they do is provide cameras and commentators, and get to take in ad revenue even though prime is a premium service. I'm convinced this was some Hollywood accounting shit. How is one season costing a billion dollars, going to bring in enough new subscribers to be profitable and keep the show running? Even with $250 mil for rights, and another $250 for sets and costumes that you can reuse, that's $500 per season and not including rising salaries for the cast. I occasionally moonlight at this bar in rural Oregon because the owners helped me with paying for school and my car when I decided to do something, most people who don't have prime are older folks who buy local or ship in from local companies in other states, on principle. And once again, I'm going to bring up football, half the regulars (and other bars/restaurants) got prime just because TNF used to be a nation wide thing on network. Same as MNF. It is still syndicated at local markets as far as I know. But regardless, this is a demographic that will mostly be gone in several years, because they are all fricking old.
