And I grew up in Sweden in the 90s and stories about cops shooting kids playing with toy guns was something people brought up every so often as a reason why kids shouldn't have air soft, pellet and cap guns, even though it had never happened once in the entire history of the country.

I know this might sound strange to a zoomer such as yourself who has never lived in a world without the internet but back in the 80s when the law for putting orange plugs at the muzzle of toy guns went into effect in America, finding videos like that wasn't exactly easy so when people read a story about a kid with a toy gun being killed by a cop in the morning paper or heard about it from a co-worker at the water cooler they typically didn't have the full context of the event since they were hearing about it from a fifth hand account.

Truth be told the movie is really not as violent as one would think coming from the Rambo franchise. It was the later parts that went absolutely overboard with violence and gore. Worst thing the first one has the guy falling out of the helicopter and they don't even show the impact.

Not saying it didn't happen but almost everyone claims they were bullied in school and were unpopular. It's weird seeing the girls who were elected Prom Queen and Homecoming Queen at my high school both now claim to have been ugly wallflowers that were bullied by the popular kids.

It's been a long time since I saw the episode. Uncle Phil was receiving some honor and had prepared a speech about growing up poor in the South and all the hardships he had to overcome but it was an extreme exaggeration of the few difficulties in the actually good upbringing he had. Think his mother or other relative told him off for it and he realized they were right that he shouldn't claim hardships he didn't actually face. Probably getting some of those details wrong but that's the general story.

it was Will's mom (i.e. Uncle Phil's sister), who was the one that berated him IIRC

I think it's a lot of that, sure. It's easy to make up shit to get sympathy.
I think also the popular kids did face some bullying and some hardships, and looking back a decade plus their memories get hazy. They start to think they did actually have it rough (remember that time Stacey said I was fat because I gained 5 pounds?) and also didn't ever really experience serious bullying so they don't understand what it is.
Like people think that getting laid off for a few months and having to budget a bit is as bad as their great grandparents had it in the Great Depression or something.

    >as he tells about his childhood growing up, he talks about some of the main influences he had before going into acting
    >''I was really anti-social for a long time, I'd spend days inside of my room not talking to anyone, I remember watching a lot of Westerners and wanting to be a cowboy, that freedom that they have, the danger, it felt like I was born in a different time or something''
