I can easily justify 2001: A Space Odyssey on its own merits. For example, it presents a superhuman presence in one of the most sublime ways I've ever seen in a film. Just because you personally get nothing out of it doesn't mean that people who claim to genuinely enjoy it are lying.
Citizen Kane was an experience for me when I was 19, it is really shot exceptionally well. If you have passion and decent exposure to film history (time to burn watching movies old and new) you have a chance to enjoy it on its own merits outside of “muh influence”
Dude, Lord of the Rings 1 is literally a masterpiece. I agree with Star Wars though. Great effects but the story is fricking stupid and I say this as a fan
Because at least they're somewhat entertaining. Kubrick's films are all long drawn out meandering snoozefests that only appeal to pseuds who want to pretend they have good taste because they like the boring movie that some professional film geek said changed his life.
People can actually enjoy their films, people pretend to like films they don't enjoy such as 2001 Space Odyssey solely because it has Kubrick's name on it. If anyone else made 2001 nobody would care

How would you know, when you clearly haven't watched them?
Scorsese is just an earlier Tarantino, copying other peoples' movies

Saying "Tarantino copies other peoples movies" is such a basic moron way of criticizing his movies. Understanding his autistic love for movies, his dorky brain full of movie knowledge beyond any one else's comprehension, and the fact he makes movies for himself is when you may start to understand why he's so great.

When he's making a movie, he sits his actors down and plays them DVDs of other movies and says "do it like that." That's not a great director. A fan of movies sure, but he adds nothing.

I'm gonna jump in this reply chain just to mention that Godard had significantly more film knowledge and did not care for Tarantino. Also, Godard's homages were much more tasteful and Tarantino's attempts to ape Godard's style come off as a dumbed down variant of it.

I can understand Welles and Bergman disliking Godard and considering him to be counterfeit intellectualism, but just imagine how much Welles would've hated Tarantino. He has an entire interview where he just shits on filmmakers who have seen too many movies and think homages are a sign of good filmmaking.
Batman may honestly be Christian Bale's worst role. Heath Ledger just carried so ridiculously hard in that movie that everyone overlooks the fact that Christian Bale's Batman is almost as goofy as Adam West's Batman except the goofiness wasn't on purpose in TDK. I think he'd make a great Bruce Wayne in a story that revolves more around Bruce and Wayne Enterprise.
That movie jumped as high as it did in the Sight and Sound poll because it was directed by a woman. That's literally it, the movie is garbage but because some c**t was behind it they decided to pretend it was good. Progressive policies have been an absolute disaster for Western culture and I only hope that they're on the way out.
Black Panther. Everyone critic's reason for putting it in the top 10 is that it's an "important movie" for blacks. They don't talk about the movie itself. Just what the movie represents.
The Seventh Seal
Citizen Kane
The Shawshank Redemption
The Wild One
The Dark Knight

Any Star Wars movie
Seven Samurai
City Of God
Akira
Ghost In The Shell
anything by Ghibli
anything by Billy Wilder
It's Brazilian Goodfellas. It's entertaining, sure, but I consistently see it in the top films of all time lists and it honestly doesn't even crack my top 50.
Black Panther. It doesn't even belong in a top 10 superhero movie list, much less the best movie ever made immediately after coming out.
Get Out as well.
assassination of jesse james
it's one of my favorite movies, good dialogue, beatifully directed and acted, but for about 90% of the runtime the onscreen events are drier than sandpaper, everything between the robbery and arriving at jesse's house is boring
The other Sight & Sound ones have been mentioned, but for me it's Mulholland Drive. It's great, but it jumped all the way to the top 10 because everyone knows Lynch and the BFI added in more and more newbie critics who shouldn't be partaking in scholarly polls.
This is the only correct answer in the thread. Because this is a typical movie people would put into the top 10 of all time, it's entry level. I remember too when I was 15 and saw it and thought "wow, now THIS is a movie!". I'd rather watch Escape from Alcatraz any day of the week.
Top 10 where? Different platforms have quite different top 10's. On letterboxd you have movies like Come and See and The Human Condition III, both of which are probably not on any normie's list.
>fantastic 4 films >every single adam sandler film >chicken run >the new Mummy film and not the original one >death proof >the hobbit films over LotR >The Martian, a well made but frankly boring film that only gets props for scientific accuracy >a new hope over empire strikes back
This is the greatest bait list i've ever seen. Its like an actual pleb-movie list mixed with a tryhard psuedo-intellectual 2deep4u list.
that image makes me angry, most of those movies are indeed pleb-tier, but Blade Runner and Apocalypto??? what kind of crack-head turbo elitist moron thinks those are anything but masterpiece-tier films?
Also an honorable mention to The End, it was a funny and well paced comedy, a solid 7/10 and shouldnt be mocked.
Propaganda nonsense like Saving Private Ryan and Downfall and others like it infuriate me more than anything else. Just a giant steaming cinematic pile of shit, a genuine white wash of real history.
hating kubrick is the opinion of plebs these days because he was sexist and abusive or something. barry lyndon is so boring and so captivating all at the same time i love it

God I fricking hate that one.

>2001 A Space Odyssey
2001 belongs at the top kys
>shoddy LSD trip
>Neo classical room with bad age makeup
>Star baby outside earth
Bravo Kubrick
all of them
Anything that nobody can justify based on actually enjoying it but for metrics of “muh influence at the time” so Citizen Kane, Vertigo, Space Odyssey.
Anything in black and white.
Yeah basically this.
This, same for games. When homosexuals have something as infantile as Tetris at the top but it's the original Game Boy version over any of the sequels
I can easily justify 2001: A Space Odyssey on its own merits. For example, it presents a superhuman presence in one of the most sublime ways I've ever seen in a film. Just because you personally get nothing out of it doesn't mean that people who claim to genuinely enjoy it are lying.
>no one could possibly have a different opinion than me
>they must all be pretending
Autism is a serious thing.
I genuinely enjoyed all of those films and if you want to pretend I'm lying you're just mainlining copium for being a moron
...Ask me how I know you've never seen any of these movies
Citizen Kane was an experience for me when I was 19, it is really shot exceptionally well. If you have passion and decent exposure to film history (time to burn watching movies old and new) you have a chance to enjoy it on its own merits outside of “muh influence”

Nobody fricking cares except nerds or cinematographers.
>no one cares about visuals in a visual medium

Kubrick is fantasy shit for manchildren.
Why hate on Kubrick when there are way worse overrated directors like Tarantino and Scorsese?
Because at least they're somewhat entertaining. Kubrick's films are all long drawn out meandering snoozefests that only appeal to pseuds who want to pretend they have good taste because they like the boring movie that some professional film geek said changed his life.
Kubrick films are unironically entertaining for the most part. Tarantino shit is fricking boring and cringey
Nothing is more overrated than Kubrick
>Tarantino
>Scorsese
>Cameron
>Nolan
People can actually enjoy their films, people pretend to like films they don't enjoy such as 2001 Space Odyssey solely because it has Kubrick's name on it. If anyone else made 2001 nobody would care
but i enjoyed 2001
People who think Stanley Kubrick is overrated also think vanilla ice cream is unflavored.
Scorsese is better than Kubrick.
How would you know, when you clearly haven't watched them?

Movie is so over hyped bad
The Dark Knight.
First one that came to mind. I don't care how good Ledger was, it's not a top 10 film.
Batman may honestly be Christian Bale's worst role. People always rank Seven Samurai at the top, but I don't get the appeal. Harakiri is way better.
If you've seen one Kurosawa movie, you've seen them all
Came here to say this. But honestly, 7 Samurai did the 'formula' of a ragtag group of heroes early (maybe even first) and well.
This trash somehow jumped from sub-200 to top 20 in the span of one year when everyone decided to go full moron.
That movie jumped as high as it did in the Sight and Sound poll because it was directed by a woman. That's literally it, the movie is garbage but because some c**t was behind it they decided to pretend it was good.
