Gatekeeping is fine, there has to be some kind of standard to be maintained for a hobby so it doesn't turn into a complete shitshow completely unrecognizable from its original concept, but new blood is usually what keeps it going, so sometimes they have to find ways to endear more people to get into it.
I understand where Bill is coming from to an extent, the people that mocked and scoffed at the hobbies I loved as a child think they're the coolest shit ever because it turned into a trend for them to chase, but his outburst seems to stem more from the fact that he's a loser that let his hobby consume him and makes it to be everything about what he is, taking any kind of changes he dislikes into something more personal.

In individual groups you can more or less pick and choose who gets in or not, even if the hobbie is niche with few interested you can tell anyone in your group to frick off or fix their attitude if they're being a nuisance
But in the fandom as a whole it would never work becouse there's no bar set, you can just say you're a fan of something without any knowledge of the subject besides the name and you would still be considered a "Fan", just a new one or a casual one
