It frustrated me that Sokka never had kids who showed up to help their cousins in Legends of Korra, I pictured him having a dozen or so kids and basically running the White Lotus before he died.
Because they're using a shallow depth of field for literally every shot. Typical with netflix stuff for some reason, maybe they're all sharing the same cinetographer idk. As well as the costumes not being weathered at all. They look brand new which looks odd and unnatural. And of course because of the shitty fight choreography.
Making Suki an autistic femcel was the only upgrade they made to this series. This was unironically a fun episode thanks to these two interacting. Ian carries this show

I don’t get this either. Only very few things are so bad they’re good, and even then those things are still miles better than this. This show is just all around terrible and cringe, there’s no redeeming element.
Not him but I'd assume it has something to do with having realistic (lowered) expectations because the live action adaptation will never be as good as the original series and expecting it to be "perfect" instead of good, or okay, is only setting yourself up to hate it.
I just mean I went in not expecting much and so far I am enjoying it more than I thought I would.
On episode 7 rn.
[...]
yeah some episodes mixed and some cut. They hit the major beats in 50 min episodes.
>I knew it was going to be shit >as it happens I enjoy the taste of shit >so I'm enjoying this shit
It's a weird cope for people who can't say they have a guilty pleasure.
I've watched the first 2 episodes and so far it seems fine. Honestly, at this point the casting doesn't seem terrible and the actors are mostly decent.
My main issue is with the editing and millennial writing/quirkiness, the show is very awkward and doesn't take itself seriously. What should take an episode of character development is crammed into a single line and then they just move on. Serious moments are undercut by unnecessary quips.
It doesn't seem nearly as bad as it has been made out to be but there's still time, if the show gets increasingly bad further into the season I'll revoke my judgement.
What's clear is that it is a kid's show and as far as they go, it's a good kid's show.
It too was lighthearted at times but it did have serious dramatic moments unhampered by marvel tier quips. Hopefully the live action show can do the same.
>Did you watch the original show?
Not entirely, I watched most of the first season as it aired on television when I was young. I liked it a lot but only vaguely remember things, I never committed to going back and finishing the series.
You should go back and watch it instead of watching netflix tripe. The original run of the last airbender are great tv with surprisingly deep characters, themes, stories and have great worldbuilding.
Enjoy the new show how much you want, but the reason why people still talk about this is because the cartoon made for babies that aired on nickelodeon is basically the best show in most of what it attempts to do - specially characters and their development, and all the themed choreography and world building - it absolutely nails it, better than any other piece of media i've seen.
I first watched that show when I was around 25, and i'm a snooty critical frick when it comes to tv and cinema. So there was no nostalgia factor for me and I was going into it sighing ''ffs am I really going to watch a nick cartoon with a frickton of episodes?'', and after forcing myself to sit through the admittedly slow and much less polished intro of the first season, there was a point where it clicked. Not for me, I mean the show itself clicked, everything started to align perfectly, characters started to become real, personal struggles became the point of the show, and it was an absolute fricking blast to see each of them going through all of it.
There's alot that can be said about this show, but it is and it will probably always be my favorite show. It was lightning in a bottle.
These frickers are starting to learn how to sell adaptations of beloved shows in cartoon form, after failing miserably with examples like death note and cowboy bebop, they started to notice what people like with examples like Witcher, but still not quite there - and recently after throwing so much shit to the wall, they seem to have put those lessons in well received adaptations, like the Death note that people liked so much. But imo, and I don't mean to sound overly pessimistic, it's all shit. They work in a very simple formula which is, make the effects decent enough, follow the storyline as simplistically as possible, capture the most iconic visual styles and effects and character quirks so it's recognizable, use the traditional emotion - tripping fake themes, and you're good to go.
Yeah, in my case too, watched during the pandemic when I was 21, I remember glimpses of the show when I was a kid but confused it with One Piece kek.
The show is really, really good developing the characters, but I found the romance super cheesy and unnecessarily dramatic, shame they doubled down with Korra with that last aspect and they fricking ruined it.
It's not a perfect show, but only because nothing is. I think everyone kinda of agrees that the romance is definitely the weaker part of it, but the show doesn't really lean too much into it, and when it does, it serves only as an ''extra condiment'' for the real action, example being aang upset in the ember island players because of how they mocked it, and I think it worked perfectly as a bow tie wrap for the final episode. Even the worst part of it FITS.
Korra gets way more shit than it deserves, but in any case, it's non canon in terms of style from ATLA.

I really like the setting, Republic City it's an interesting direction and a really creative way to develop the zones the fire nation colonized.
But as I said, they lean into the romance way too much (maybe because this was aimed at teenagers?) and they ruined it. Asami-Mako-Korra love triangle fricking sucks.
I have to say Amon is my favorite villain in the entire Avatar universe, that final scene with her brother in the speedboat at the end is really cold and a good end to their characters.

Also I forgot to mention the soundtrack is really good as well, one 9f the few shows I didn't skip the ending credits
good post anon >there was a point where it clicked
it was the blue spirit episode
ATLA may not be the "best" show I've ever seen but I've never had more fun watching a show
>millennial writing
All the showrunners and directors involved in this are Asian boomers and xoomers. I doubt any of the actors are even millennials since they all look to be in their teens and early twenties.
millenial writing has kind of become the generalised term for that style of writing.
I have nightmare flashbacks of nuStar Wars when I hear half of the lines+delivery on this show >they fly now? >THEY FLY NOW!
>All the showrunners and directors involved in this are Asian boomers and xoomers.
Lol, I didn’t even know this, but it checks out. “Let’s do a remake of a fantasy cartoon originally written and directed by a bunch of white men, which is a basically their love letter to asian culture and anime. Of course it must be written and directed by asians exclusively, because reasons.”
God, it sucks to be living in permanent currentyear.
This is unironically spot on casting.
The races within avatar aren't "real" (though some cultural things are obviously based on asian culture) and the closest thing you can get is some hapa.
I've said it before but I always figured Suki looked like a east Turk.
You've got not-Nips, not-North-Han, not-South-Han, Not-Siberians, Not-Pacific-Islanders, not-Tibetans, not-Indians, and not-Mongols. The only thing you're missing from the classical Chinese world are not-Manchu and not-Turks. And maybe not-Koreans depending on how you interpret some of the Earth Kingdom locales.
So what was the purpose behind casting a “Cherokee” as a water tribe member? Native Americans aren’t even Asian. As least with M. Night he went for the Scandinavian/Viking route which geographically more or less made sense. Technically Netflix wanted Eskimo but I guess there isn’t exactly a variety of Eskimo actors to choose from. Man I just don’t get the “all Asian” mandate they had set for this thing.
I tried guys I really did. But the scene of Azula and the girls in episode 3 was the last straw for me. Every scene in this show is cringe and void of life and chemistry. There’s simply no enjoyment for me.
Finally finished watching all 8 episodes, it's not completely terrible but it's a mess, the actors almost never showed being comfortable playing their characters
-aang looked disoriented most of the times, you can't tell when he tries to be angry or sad, but at least they let him play a little with other kids at the beginning and just flying for fun in omashu
-katara is god awful, she's by far the worst one, always looking like she's too dumb to understand what's going on and doesn't have chemistry with aang, if this gets renewed, I don't know how are they planning on building up their romance
-sokka's not bad, he tries but not all of his jokes land, at least the guy is not annoying, plus I was surprised they let him kiss suki right away during episode 2
-zuko is the best one by far, he can show all of the character's emotions properly and you can tell he's going to carry the show hard if we get book 2 and 3 adapted
-uncle iroh was alright, he doesn't show much but he's likable enough
-azula was really weird, it's not just her being fat, she doesn't have the presence, she also doesn't have the blue fire yet but it did appear for a brief moment so this season was her training arc
-zhao needed a better appearance, the actor was fine but he never looked any different from all the other soldiers
-the fight sequences were ok, my favorite was the omashu one with zuko and aang that was fun like in the show, the cabbage guy jokes didn't work for me
-the cgi was bad in general, the scenes when they're traveling on top of something looked like shit, on boats, on those omashu carts or on appa, the bending scenes weren't good either, aang looks weird flying
-the monsters, creatures and spirits didn't look very good either, they used a lot of smoke and darkness to hide them
-I didn't care about the changes to the story that much, they more or less just used and scrapped subplots they seemed fit for this season, simply because those won't get enough room for season 2 or 3
It seems like it was changed to something she can master this time, which honestly is not that bad, but it creates an inconsistency because no other character can achieve that, not even the fire lord, unless they're planning on changing that as well for book 3
I just don’t like Zuko at all here. The movie having an older actor worked out for itself whereas here his presence is lacking and coupled with the bad dialogue it just comes off as pure crineg for me. Sokka’s actor, despite being the ethnical black sheep (or should I say white sheep), is the most promising of the cast. The acting ability and look is there but as with every other character the content isn’t there.
The costumes also weren't that good either, like in pic related, couldn't they find an actress with actual platinum blond hair for yue? That wig was ridiculous
>couldn't they find an actress with actual platinum blond hair for yue?
an asian-looking woman with naturally platinum-blonde hair? sure, probably billions of them around.
The north water tribe people had more variety of actors, they weren't just asians, that actress is native american, even the water avatar was a guy with blue eyes, they could have gotten away with a scandinavian actress and just say her being blessed by the moon spirit changed her appearance or something
>Aang cant act >dialogue sucks and is making me cringe >needlessly frick with the timeline so The Aang isnt found in ice like the cartoon and instead have the air nation functional instead of being destroyed before Aang is even de-thawed >Aang knows hes the avatar from the beginning and is constantly told he's special
frick with the timeline so The Aang isnt found in ice like the cartoon and instead have the air nation functional instead of being destroyed before Aang is even de-thawed
What... none of this happens like you say it does. He IS found in ice. The air nation IS destroyed. What did you watch anon?
The original show's first episode is Aang being found in the ice by katara and Sokka. Then the fire nation (zuko) coming after him and sokka almost dying for the villiage. Its been a long time since i watched the original but you dont get Aang's backstory until later. Also if i remember correctly the airbenders are implied to have been destroyed years ago by the fire nation. Not literally the moment Aang left. Aang was frozen for a long time. not like 1 day. I may be wrong but thats how i remember it. I'll continue wathcing but overall the impressions have been bad so far. The fight scenes are pretty good though, better than expected .
Overall i'd call it sloppy. Everything feels rushed and like it lacks any emotional weight or impact. Perhaps its because they're compressing three separate episodes in to one but its like the show is trying to rush through every plot point as quickly as possible, giving them no stakes nor any reaction from the main characters.
the characters feel like shadows of the cartoon ones. Nobody shows emotion or character traits. Aang goes from a cheeky chap who acts goofy most of the time to some bland kid that just stands there delivering lines. He doesnt get angry, doesnt get sad, doesnt show happiness, just stands there awkwardly delivering his lines. I found it distracting that there are multiple shots where he's supposed to be crying but the kid cant do it because he cant act >you're telling my all of the airbenders are dead. I guess i'll walk out of the tent and then forget about it 10 seconds later.
The CGI version of Aang they cut to for certain shots seems to emote better than the real actor.
Its the same with every major character. Sokka has gone from the comedy relief wisecrack guy to a... bland guy delivering his lines in monotone . Katara has gone from the mother figure of the group, constantly clashing heads with sokka with his best interests at heart to.... a girl stood there awkwardly saying her lines with no emotion. . The closest character to "good" is Iroh and i think even he has lost a lot of his warmth and charm in the live action version.
Also wasnt Aangs first avatar state on the ship with zuko in the cartoon? What a wasted opportunity. Cinematography kind of sucks too, as does the CGI. The fight scenes seem okay but you also have stuff like airbenders shooting air out of their hands like they're wizards. The whole point of the bending stuff in the cartoon was that it was supposed to be an extension of the characters body like a martial art.
i mean opposed to him just randomly doing it in the air temple . There could have been a good opportunity for there to be a fight scene between Aang and the fire nation soldiers as the original show does to show Aangs power level. It is also supposed to be juxtaposed with how goofy Aang acts to show that even though he's just a kid he still has crazy power he needs to control, which the live action show also fricks up because it doesnt characterize Aang at all. They obviously needed something to happen in the air nation remains so they swapped the avatar state over to happen there but it could have been a good opportunity for Aang to actually interact with Katara and Sokka and talk to them as opposed to... just not doing that for the whole episode and having Sokka and Katara just randomly pledge themselves to saving him. I know he did talk to katara a bit but it was so forced and stilted. The dialogue doesnt feel any way near as natural and well written as the cartoon.
For this one I think the costumes look way too clean and are too brightly dyed. It looks cheap because you expect a significant amount of wear and tear for peasants in not modern times, or at least some degree of wear. Especially for colors like Aang's gi which is bright orange, even if he were frozen he was still wearing it every day before, it should appear more worn.
I'm not saying there can't be some people in brighter gear but all of the outfits look essentially brand new. Even if you want them bright they literally look like they're brand new clothes.
HD digital recording technology was unironically a mistake. Film grain, low resolutions, and low framerates all work together to hold up the illusion of film as you watch it. Look no further than The Hobbit for the best example of this. The HFR version of The Hobbit looks like shit, literally everything on-screen looks cheap and fake the entire time while the normal framerate version looks so much better because all the on-screen elements blend together nicer. People have always said that props and sets and makeup just need to improve along with visual fidelity, but I really don't think that's possible. You NEED to visually obscure what's on-screen in order to make it look believable, tie all the elements together, and allow you to suspend disbelief. Everything will always look fake and gay in HD digital.
It's moreso that none of the studios want to put in the work to make it look good at high fidelity. aka typical israeli idealogy. Only non israelites care about art to make something as pristine as what you are saying. Believe me, they are capable of making good visuals at 4K. They just dont want to.
Used a bad example mate, Hobbit looks like shit because it's shit. It's the fresh-out-of-the-store makeup and costume design, and the prequels-level of CGI and green screen that makes it look fake. Though I agree that HD only makes this more noticeable.
You can think of examples where HD visuals work, when they put in the work for it. You have the tauted Nolan flicks for example. It's pure lack of effort / spending / artistic integrity. I had the issue you described with one piece adaptation. It LOOKS hd, but also too ''plastic''.
>ep 1 >firegays vs airgays fight >airgays landed 20 hits against firegays >firegays fly around for a bit but ultimately the attacks didnt do much damage >firegays landed 1 hit >airgays get roasted alive
should've picked a better element lmao
Korra retconned that. The avatar is inherently "worldly" and therefore can never achieve the levels of detachment required to levitate/fly like the old airbending masters and Zaheer.
>I'm hearing that Aang and Katara aren't romantic at all. Are the showrunners Zutarans
no, they just aren't pedophiles. aang's actor is 13 and katara's is 17, its not just weird to have them hook up its borderline illegal.

I've never understood this talking point
what is it?
I just mean I went in not expecting much and so far I am enjoying it more than I thought I would.
On episode 7 rn.
yeah some episodes mixed and some cut. They hit the major beats in 50 min episodes.
I don’t get this either. Only very few things are so bad they’re good, and even then those things are still miles better than this. This show is just all around terrible and cringe, there’s no redeeming element.
idk man, maybe its nostalgia. I haven't seen Yue yet other than posts here. Thats rough
Not him but I'd assume it has something to do with having realistic (lowered) expectations because the live action adaptation will never be as good as the original series and expecting it to be "perfect" instead of good, or okay, is only setting yourself up to hate it.
exactly
see
Usually means it's shit.
>I'm enjoying it for what it is (shit)
Stupid people don't think about their word choice.
>I knew it was going to be shit
>as it happens I enjoy the taste of shit
>so I'm enjoying this shit
It's a weird cope for people who can't say they have a guilty pleasure.
Have you watched the whole season? Do they try to cram all 20 eps of the first season in to 8? If so it's inevitably going to be shit.
>I think if you were hoping for anything close to the original you're delusional.
>If you were hoping it was good you're delusional
Did you watch the original show?
Korra is when it started to suck. Last season having lesbos was the sign the writers became gay.
Well it came fricking right out of left field with no build up. Just pants on head moronic
Also I forgot to mention the soundtrack is really good as well, one 9f the few shows I didn't skip the ending credits
good post anon
>there was a point where it clicked
it was the blue spirit episode
ATLA may not be the "best" show I've ever seen but I've never had more fun watching a show
>millennial writing
All the showrunners and directors involved in this are Asian boomers and xoomers. I doubt any of the actors are even millennials since they all look to be in their teens and early twenties.
millenial writing has kind of become the generalised term for that style of writing.
I have nightmare flashbacks of nuStar Wars when I hear half of the lines+delivery on this show
>they fly now?
>THEY FLY NOW!
It's millennial [targeted] writing not millennial [origin] writing
They're going for the millennial audience
Ironically it still isn't since Suki is one of the whitest looking characters in the cartoon, but she is a dead ringer for an Azula or Mai type.
I meant for the show as a whole, you're right about her being whitelooking (especially with traits like non-black hair and blue eyes)
And maybe not-Koreans depending on how you interpret some of the Earth Kingdom locales.
who are the jungle redneck benders
Viet-Cajuns
didn't she have some old instagram pics where her nips were visible through the sheer fabric and netlix made her remove them?
Last survivor
She looks like a Puerto Rican prostitute. She makes me sick.
The Water Tribe are very clearly Inuit based, not Asian.
My head hurts with these casting decisions
HAAAAAAAAA I DEMAND A HAPA GF
Dies Netflix still do that thing where it uploads the whole show? I'm guess that's why no one is posting anything about Aang or even the ending?
they uploaded the whole thing but its just the book of water
>tfw Suki has good feet
Man would their children have a truly almighty jaw, Sokka's chin is huge and Suki has a strong jawline as well.
-the monsters, creatures and spirits didn't look very good either, they used a lot of smoke and darkness to hide them
-I didn't care about the changes to the story that much, they more or less just used and scrapped subplots they seemed fit for this season, simply because those won't get enough room for season 2 or 3
>katara is god awful
Not really breaking news
>she also doesn't have the blue fire yet
The frick? Blue fire is something she got from birth
Since when?
It seems like it was changed to something she can master this time, which honestly is not that bad, but it creates an inconsistency because no other character can achieve that, not even the fire lord, unless they're planning on changing that as well for book 3
No it isn't.
Good read
I just don’t like Zuko at all here. The movie having an older actor worked out for itself whereas here his presence is lacking and coupled with the bad dialogue it just comes off as pure crineg for me. Sokka’s actor, despite being the ethnical black sheep (or should I say white sheep), is the most promising of the cast. The acting ability and look is there but as with every other character the content isn’t there.
The costumes also weren't that good either, like in pic related, couldn't they find an actress with actual platinum blond hair for yue? That wig was ridiculous
dickhair from the shamalam movie was unironically way better
I don't know how they managed to make Midthunder look meh but they did.
Also the makeup was trash
frick that looks ugly. I've seen cosplays that do better "old eyebows" than that
Even Jackass had better old man makeup than this garbage
This dude is supposed to be 125 years old or something lol.
people were payed living wages to make that. wtf...
>couldn't they find an actress with actual platinum blond hair for yue?
an asian-looking woman with naturally platinum-blonde hair? sure, probably billions of them around.
The north water tribe people had more variety of actors, they weren't just asians, that actress is native american, even the water avatar was a guy with blue eyes, they could have gotten away with a scandinavian actress and just say her being blessed by the moon spirit changed her appearance or something
Wait, did they really have her show that kind of expression? She was literally the kindest character in the show
Apologize to Shyamalan.
Her wig was a better fit but had the old wiener hairdo.

Watching the first 5 mins of ep 1:
>Aang cant act
>dialogue sucks and is making me cringe
>needlessly frick with the timeline so The Aang isnt found in ice like the cartoon and instead have the air nation functional instead of being destroyed before Aang is even de-thawed
>Aang knows hes the avatar from the beginning and is constantly told he's special
yep. This is netflix slop alright.
frick with the timeline so The Aang isnt found in ice like the cartoon and instead have the air nation functional instead of being destroyed before Aang is even de-thawed
What... none of this happens like you say it does.
Fire Nation wiped Air Nomads not long after Aang dispeared
Is Aang frozen for years after though? I cant remember, has been a long time since i watched the cartoon.
A full century
100 years the difference with the Netflix adaptation is that they change the order of events of how we know things but the information is the same.
Haven't seen Fatzula yet as I'm on episode 3 but so far it's alright.
>Watching the first 5 mins
Go away
Bros... if this doesn't get a season 2 and 3 then we'll never see her again...
how many episode do I have to suffer through before she takes the makeup off.
She's only in the second episode, so not long.
goddam she is literally fricking perfect
She looks like an upgraded version of Moner
nah
super cute
>tfw no suki gf
it's so over for me
bros got a crazy underbite
shes hot still not watching your netflix dogshit. Funny how when they want they keep the casting 1;1 accurate without any blacks.
The show would do better with Sokka and his harem.
Suki #1
Yue #2
Ty Lee #3
Yue looks terrible. Ty Lee on the other hand …
Big smile
nipple
Can just about make out her areola anon.
Momo looks like the monkey some seaBlack person would torture
Just finished watching ep 1:
I found it distracting that there are multiple shots where he's supposed to be crying but the kid cant do it because he cant act
>you're telling my all of the airbenders are dead.
>>Also wasnt Aangs first avatar state on the ship with zuko in the cartoon?
No, his freezing himself and Appa in the ocean was
i mean opposed to him just randomly doing it in the air temple .
Jesus Christ just saw what they did to Mai. She makes Azula look like she's anorexic
is she chinese or japanese?

>WITH AUBURN HAIR AND TAWNY EYES
Which one? Pic unrelated, I assume.
is there a single black person on this show?
it's an asian based show, so they turn down the black diversity for asian diversity
why the frick is zuko so fat
they all look ugly and fat
Why does every single Hollywood production looks cheap now in spite of it costing 90 trillions per episode to make?
It LOOKS hd, but also too ''plastic''.
she mogs all of them
Funny how the fat one is the hottest.
She isn't though
tell me you're american without telling me you're american
she's the third hottest there at best
Always is architect bro
Suki mogs them all hard.

My mind is so poisoned by this website I thought this was Amelia wang at first.
Same
cute
>don't find asians attractive
>find hapas intensely attractive
I wonder why that is
Hapas don't actually look much like the average asian, they have more in common with jomon looks-wise.
I would never want a hapa son
a jomon son? I can accept that
>some beta homosexual
>muh "stronk womyn" in feudal Japan
Yea, absolute fricking shit. Frick that show.
Cute
>ywn
How many episodes is she in?
I watch for her
Not enough. Just 1. It will be steamy in Boiling Rock.
awmygawd so pretty
Wait until Ty Lee comes out. HUBBA HUBBA
Why can't they hire actually attractive actresses from overseas
>B-But they don't speak engrish
The accent only makes it more authentic!
Maria Zhang is literally from "overseas".
IIIIII.....wanna have seeeeeex....with Maria Zhang....with Maria Zhaaaaang!
bb suki
Suki's communist tomboy mom (that looks oddly similar to nuSokka)
She did historic restorations? Oddly noble professional to end up with a daughter in acting.
why the frick can aang fly like some chris angel jesus christ type shit
the only good thing coming out of this shit show is an E;R video
Doesn’t he always fly like that in the avatar state? He levitates all the time then.
yeah in the avatar state with massive airbending power not like fricking peter pan
Korra retconned that. The avatar is inherently "worldly" and therefore can never achieve the levels of detachment required to levitate/fly like the old airbending masters and Zaheer.
>blurhblarhwurblarblu
The frick are you taking about anon?
I kinda like that they got rid of the mechanist as a separate plot, always hated his episode. Everything else about this show is ass.
I'm hearing that Aang and Katara aren't romantic at all. Are the showrunners Zutarans
>I'm hearing that Aang and Katara aren't romantic at all. Are the showrunners Zutarans
no, they just aren't pedophiles. aang's actor is 13 and katara's is 17, its not just weird to have them hook up its borderline illegal.
I hate anti-age gap gays so much.
>borderline illegal
It's not illegal at all
feels good being a SukiCHAD
YOUR insane if you didn't think episode KIYOSHI and SUKI wasn't the highlight of that episode.
SUKI IS A CUTEY
big ass with wide hips and flat chest is patrician taste.
I go with big ass, even if NO breasts is hard. Really, it isn't attractive at all, but you just got to tell her to keep her bra, or top on.
A proper flat chest (not the ugly shaped small breasts) + big ass is kino.
posting in blessed Suki thread
Big breasts with no ass is the only straight answer.
I think casting a gay actor as a straight character is a miscast as well
Sukichads we just keep winning
