Patton Oswalt actually works great as a schlubby everyman sidekick, like TV's Frank. Felicia Day... I like her, but something about her just doesn't work. Her "quirky" doesn't fit MST3K's style of quirky. And Kinga's too nice with Max when she should be more antagonistic. Like I don't think she's killed him once?

I don't really blame them. There's only so many riff worthy bad movies in the first place and they've already done all the best ones. It's only natural that the quality is going to suffer no matter who's on the show.

What I've seen of Rifftrax has been okay, but I haven't seen too much of it. There's still very few truly bad movies made since the 00s that are actually done in earnest instead of ironically which isn't as fun to make fun of.

I want to like Rifftrax but it's really not even close. They're all just so much older, and the style is completely different. So much of what makes MST3K so enjoyable is not the "jokes" or the "riffs" but when they're just mumbling and giggling to themselves and doing funny exaggerated midwestern accents and sound effects and just showing general goofiness towards the film. I watch any given Rifftrax and most of the jokes are just "boy this movie sure is bad and makes me angry".

honestly I feel like they're stronger in different ways, in Rifftrax they make each other break and laugh more(which I think is a good way to spot the ad libbed riffs compared to the scripted ones) and they're not as constrained in their joke making by being on network or cable television

We are such opposites, I find the live shows the app-solute worst.
They ruin a lot of the running jokes Becuase the PC crowd doesn’t laugh at the ris jokes, and then they stop doing them on the videos.

This is my biggest problem. MS3tk had an in universe philosophy of "ok, we have to watch this movie, so lets make the best of it". Now they are angry.
              >They're all just so much older,
In a way they should be less angry because of this. If they had a "no insulting the movie" rule, Rifftrax would at least be more MST3k-like.

Random posts I've made about nuMST3k before:
    >I hate literally everything the reboot has done with Gypsy. Renaming her GPC, getting rid of her Miss Piggy voice and making her just sound like "woman," getting rid of her naive, "I don't get you guys" but well meaning personality, and permanently sticking her on the ceiling (it might be better if she alternated between the ceiling and her old standing "mode," but as a permanent change, it's too much when combined with the other three problems). She's barely even the same character anymore. There's more to the Bots than just their physical design, and shame on Joel for forgetting that.

    >This is another thing that grinds my gears about the new seasons. They completely misunderstood and misapplied "It's just a show, I should really just relax." That line was ONLY ever in reference to minor shit no one cares about, like "How did Joel build the Bots?" "Didn't anyone notice when Joel or Mike went missing?" "How does he eat and breathe?" It was NEVER meant to be a "Who gives a shit? lol" get-out-of-jail-free card concerning the lore and notable plot points of the show. The original show still knew it had to take the time to tell us where Joel went, where Mike came from, where Dr. F and Frank went, where Pearl, Bobo, and Brain Guy came from, how Mike and the Bots came back to the Satellite and discovered Future Ape Earth, etc. We should've known how Kinga recaptured the Bots (or if they were new versions she made herself) within MINUTES of the first Netflix episode, and as far as I'm aware (I've only seen one episode of Season 13), they still haven't told us.

    >Yeah, it's really weird. It's still seriously uncool that Jim forced Joel out of his own creation, but looking back at what they each gave us on their own... Jim gave us the movie and the entire rest of the show after Joel left. Joel gave us Season 11-13. What happened? Did Joel simply become rusty and lost the "MST3K spark" after all those years away from it? Or is it a George Lucas/Star Wars situation, where he's only good when he has someone to reason with him or tell him no when need be, and for Joel, that person was... Well, I was going to say Jim, but I guess Mike, Trace, Kevin, or Frank might've been that guy for Joel, too. Hell, maybe it was all five of them.

I hate that there are duplicates of the Bots for each host, each with their own unique voices. It would've been better if the Bots just traveled to each host's Satellite, or if all three hosts just stayed in different sections of the same Satellite. Also, I've heard that Growler and Waverly have been basically made into Kinga and Max's Bots, which is dumb and I hope isn't permanent.

Movie selection was very, very hit or miss for the entire run, but it was much worse during the Joel era. I legit don't know what they were thinking with some of the choices.
When they got to SciFi channel the execs told them to choose more scifi movies and the crew objected, but eventually relented. This executive meddling led to some of the best eps of all time.

Not that anon but I read on message boards years ago that the fans were told that Joel was always tired in episodes because he was so overworked and didn’t get much sleep but that was debunked by some sources that no he had a drug problem and that’s why he could barely stay awake during episodes. Now I don’t know the extent of Joel’s drug problems but watching those Joel episodes you can see he’s very unhealthy. Imagine working with a guy who can barely stay awake during the tapings of the episodes? Some Joel sympathetic fans said he was just a huge stoner but that’s no excuse for unprofessionalism and weed doesn’t make you practically comatose either. So switching to Mike was the best thing they could for the longevity of the series. And that also explains why Joel was so adamant to changes like the movie. Only a degenerate addict would go “but a movie would be more work that I don’t want to do”. What a loser

This is just embarrassing. What triggered this meltdown? Another zoomie hater of MST3K?

    >Joel vs. Mike Debate
    >This is what every thread with anything remotely to do with Mystery Science Theater 3000 tends to become. For those who don't know, Joel Hodgson was the original star of MST3K, who left the show after the episode "Mitchell". He was then replaced by Mike Nelson, who was a writer for the show and played various small roles during host segments (namely Torgo's Pizza and Morrissey). MSTies tend to be very defensive of their preferred star, even though lots of the Mike hatred comes from the general inferiority of the host segments in the Pearl Forrester episodes
