I showed a normie friend cumtown and a few months later he said his favorite was stav.
I don't get his appeal but current year nick /adam are so drained of all energy they aren't any better. I miss the good days.

The reason Cumtown used to be so good is because they used to blast cocaine constantly between 2016-2020 and it fueled a lot of the comedy. They had to stop once covid hit cause obviously they couldn't buy coke from anyone and thats where the show started to fall apart. Seems like they realized that only liked to be around each other to do drugs and once that stopped they realized that they didn't really like each other that much. You can hear in some of the earlier eps how Stav would get pissed at Nick for bringing up his weight, so there was tension there already as it was.

Even the early episodes of tafs before the set was built were good though. The 1 with shane gillis when they talk about the hindenberg was one of my favorite episodes. As soon as the set was made nick just sort of gave up

Yeah idk wtf happened to my boy Nick but he seems on the edge of suicide lately. It could be anything really. Jealousy of Stav working so hard and doing better than him despite years of telling him he was a worthless lardass. Years of alcoholism and drug use catching up to him, and he also stopped working out and looks frail as shit now. 2016 cokehead bodybuilder Nick was the best, he was so fricking funny and now he looks like he's one bad day away from hanging himself.

He hypes nick up by making him feel funny. There's a reason they still use laugh tracks to this day. It works. I don't care what pretentious idea you have about laugh tracks. I'm talking about in general.

He is a dry drunk. All he wants to do is get fricked up and he hates being sober.
He made pretty clear in 1 episode when he described "having fun" now is boring because he compares it to the nights he would rail coke all night.
He really needs another manic episode but in order for that he needs a goal to achieve. Before it was building the set, now he just fills up 2 hours on camera to appease his paypigs

Some of the funniest bits where him talking about his days as a call center guy when he was still an alcoholic. Nick just needs to get autistic about some new drug and he could totally be funny again. Someone needs to introduce him to Kratom or get him an Adderall script or something. Him being sober and just doing woodworking all the time is turning him into a boring ass grilling Dad

You're all basically saying it but missing the point. He's less funny now not cause he's depressed, but becaused he's happy. Rather he's content. He's calm. At peace. He achieved what he wanted and can relax now. Yes he's becoming a boring carpenter dad, but that's because he's finally serene where he wants to be and isn't in a manic state to get somewhere. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up finding someone and semi-retiring from the spotlight in the next few years

I have a normie friend who also listened to CumTown and really likes Stav specifically.

The "look at me I'm gross looking" thing always felt like a cope to me. I feel like Sam Hyde does something similar but not as blatant or far as Stav.
It feels like he's afraid to try to not make himself look gross, because if he tried he could fail, so instead he just goes "look guys! I'm not trying so it's not bad or embarrassing that I'm gross! haha!"
This is really exposed when Nick pressed him about being fat that one time and he immediately flipped out.

It felt like he'd interrupt with stupid stuff too often and break the flow.
I also don't get why he quit the free money minimum effort podcast. So he could make it big or something? I feel like still being on the podcast would have helped him in that regard. Instead, he dropped off the face of the earth, and obviously, not every cumtown viewer is going to follow him or ever hear from him again now.

True, that's the inevitable outcome of being too ironic. You can't be honest with anyone and it ends up restricting you too much

Plainly the case. Nick was 100% right when he said that Stav will never get in shape.

Stav's special was generally good with no great peaks nor deep valleys. Nick's special had higher peaks but for moments was kinda boring. I was surprised and underwhelmed when he watered down his views for the special, so I checked out in some places. I'd say that Nick won, the old guard (CK follows him and Burr shared a clip from his special and a bit from TAFS) respects Nick a lot more than Stav.

He is too autist to contradict himself after bashing people about selling out or being a hack. I assume that he does not want Cumtown to be a lightning in a bottle and wants to create a new thing that will be celebrated heavily at least some of the people.

Care or not, the Cumtown/Red Scare era is over. It's been over for maybe a year or two now.

They had a few years of fame between 2016 and 2020, where they were "underground" and edgy, and that gave them credibility in certain parts of the Internet. All of them failed dramatically to leverage that momentum into anything worthwhile. Nick, Adam, and Stav could have legitimately made a show together. They could have created a studio, a production company, and started producing or even licensing original material from themselves and other people. They had the reach and the popularity to do so.

The same goes for Dasha and Anna. Momentarily, they had enough influence and traction to create something new and unique. Red Scare could have been the flagship show for an underground network of similar material. There's already a bunch of podcasts, shows, and personalities who draw clear inspiration from them. If they had played their cards right, they could have created something really original and interesting. The beginning of a new media system and a new aesthetic they were already naturally positioned as the heads of. It was all right there.

This is definitely overly-optimistic, especially given the current reality. But anyone with half a brain and a year in marketing or business could have taken what they did and literally and figuratively capitalized on it, both economically and culturally. Instead of just being slowly-decaying performers, these people could have been heads of industry. It sounds ridiculous, but I believe it to be true.

Truth is, they're either not motivated enough, blinded by money and fame, or too trapped in their own ironic personas where such a move would be difficult to make without people screaming that they were betraying preconceived values.

I think in reality, they're all too concerned with being performers. They had and still have no intention of beginning an enterprise or organization which stretches beyond them. This attitude is what makes them popular in the first place---it's myopic, but oddly endearing and relatable.

It's also what makes this hard to watch. I think they're all on the backslide and they know it. You can only perform for so long before you run out of lifespan and material. You have to have something you're building towards, or else you trap yourself in a death spiral of your own making. It's not about "building a brand" or "maximizing returns". It's about being an artist or entertainer or person who has the capacity to go from being an act and a singular force, to transferring that knowledge into a structure of their own creation where what they've learned can be communicated, distributed, and put to use for those of a similar disposition. Great heroes, and great people, find a way to set up a space where they can go from being an adventurer, to a teacher. Whether it's a business, a studio, an academy, or something else, you have to find some way to put yourself in the backseat so you can help the next generation come up and succeed.

These people will probably slowly fade into obscurity. They'll always be popular for their small and dedicated fanbases, but they've missed the opportunity for now when it comes to building something larger than themselves. It's really, really sad. Again, I know this is stupidly and overly-optimistic, but they had a real shot at something larger, and they totally whiffed.

If anything, I suppose it can serve as a lesson to anyone moving forward: don't just plan to succeed for yourself. Never be content with just "getting yours". Use what you gain to help other people gain as well. It's only through such a course of action that your legacy is built, and other people can truly benefit from what you have to teach and say. They will go on to do great things, better than you most likely, and that in itself is a greater reward than any single rush from performing could ever be.

It's not like they can't ever succeed again. But recapturing the kind of cultural momentum they had is going to be extremely difficult. Especially given their ages---many of them are approaching their late 30s. If they want to do something, it's kind of now or never.

It would just be nice to have people who know how to make something, and have a good sense of aesthetics, create a place where they can slowly challenge conventional media standards. It doesn't have to be LE EPIC MEDIA EMPIRE, it can just be a genuinely good company, made up of a group of people who work hard to create something together. Ghibli, certain eras of Disney, early HBO, and so on. I think there's a real niche there for an artist to fill.

This will sound incredibly gay but the closest analogy I can think of is Yoda telling Luke that there is no try, only do or do not. As soon as you start trying it doesn’t work. CT and RS both worked because of specific chemistry in a very free format and it stops working the second you start producing.

That's fair. I do think it could come off as very forced.

At the same time, they're the only people in the current generational sphere with the reach and the sense of aesthetics I would trust to do it. Maybe that's expecting way too much, and I do believe their personalities wouldn't allow it. It's just unfortunate, because I could see Nick/Adam/Stav in a very "It's Always Sunny" situation, where they get to write, direct, and act in their own stuff. Only they could take it a step further, and actually produce the whole show themselves, while also bringing in members of the culture they know to keep it fresh. I seriously think, for The Adam Friedland Show, it would be awesome if they did a filmed miniature episode every couple of weeks where it's just Adam and Nick, and maybe someone else occasionally, wandering around their fictionalized version of New York and getting into shit. You could even frame it as an opener to Patreon-gated episodes.

The same goes for Anna and Dasha. I don't ever see them filming stuff, but the fact that they've never sat down and written a book together is insane to me. They're both incredibly talented, and they have a lot to say on a variety of topics. It could literally be a collection of aphorisms from the show, essays from the two of them, a script from Dasha, snapshots of the first few years of the show. A whole scrapbook of their experiences and thoughts. Corny, maybe, but if done right, it would really be a cool cultural piece to put together. They've joked before about people asking them to write a book, but I'm not asking for a "The Red Scare Girls' Guide To Being A Fricking b***h" or some crap like that. I'm asking for something genuine.

I do think, again, their personalities prevent them from doing something like this. They all seem really invested in ironic stances, and once you've made your bed there, it's difficult to leave. Plus, I get the possible cringe from attempting to make it seem like you're bigger than you really are.

I think that leap needs to be made by someone, though, and I would have preferred it to be them. Say what you want, but they seem like intelligent and savvy individuals, and I'd rather have them be the up-and-coming vanguard of a kind of culture than some of the bug-brained ghouls on Reddit, or the tech borgs who usually start this kind of stuff.

For Christ's sake, the closest the current generation has to a youth-run media company is Bar Stool, or Morning Brew. They can be fun, but they cater to specific post-college normie demographics. Where is the artistic version of that? I think it's something we desperately need.

Not sure what all this is supposed to be about. The idea that these people were going to ride their quarantine-era pod fame into.....well, what exactly? "starting a production company"? How the frick were any of these people gonna do that?

There was no follow-up planned for any of this stuff. I do love the idea that being 32 is some insurmountable barrier for anyone who might work in the creative world. They're not would-be Madonnas. The future for Nick, Adam, Dasha, or Anna could hold something good or something completely mundane, but Stavros netflix special is a fricking tombstone. That's where it ends for most comedians. back 2 the road

They were all popular at least two years or so before quarantine—in fact, you could argue that corona was the beginning of their collective ebb from whatever popularity they had into an era where they either declined and cancelled their shows, or attempted more and more shock-value stunts to stay relevant.

What’s more, for entertainment, they ARE old. Look at other people who are their age in entertainment, and compare the levels of success. Success isn’t a guarantee of quality, but these people are all talented and could have definitely done more. They didn’t, so it’s a moot point, and hindsight is always 20/20. Still doesn’t erase facts.

Also, starting any type of production company isn’t that hard. Literally just get cameras and some capital, which all of them have, and do it. A publishing company is even easier—you can find great no-strings-attached printers online who can put out copies of whatever you write on-demand. There is no excuse other than a lack of preparation, or motivation. These are understandable and empathetic, and I don’t hold anything against them. I’m just saying what I see and I can’t help but feel disappointed. People dream of getting to their level and making the most of the opportunity presented. Not cashing out—genuinely building something cool, and real, and meaningful.

More than anything, they’ve made their living talking about what they think is wrong in the world. But they have done nothing other than talk. You need to do more, or else you just end up looking kind of phony.

Your first several statements were loaded with incendiary comments meant to provoke, which is fair given the site we're on, but still, don't play that shit and then try and ask, "What do you mean, I was clearly saying____."

I'm not disagreeing with you that I don't know shit about these people's psychological profiles, but if you think you can't tell at least something about someone from listening to or watching their work, I think that's a little ridiculous.

And you're right---it is conjecture and speculation, to a massive degree. That doesn't erase any potential truth in the observation. I have no idea why people are so incredibly defensive over Cumtown and Red Scare. These are genuinely some of the only podcasts I listen to, but if you can't be honest with yourself and give feedback, then what's the point of engaging with someone and their work at all? I welcome the criticism, and I hope they would too.

I've watched both their specials, all they do is steal jokes and pepper them between " remember this from cumtown?" references, and the crowd goes insane for those. I never liked cumtown or forced edgy shit for the sake of being edgy, i'll never consider these guys real comedians, they never cut their teeth in an honest way with crowds who never knew who they were, they just went from podcasting, amassing their fans there, and exporting them into their comedy shows for that artificial success. Stav is unfortunately just likable and Nick isn’t. Nick isn’t a very good standup. He’s a radio personality. Sucks I like Nick better like most non-normies but normies like Stav better. It what it is. Nicks funniest standup stuff is when he was reading roast jokes off a piece of paper and Stav can just walk up and raz the crowd and have them in the palm of his hand. Life isn’t fair. I think Nick just needs to accept he’s a podcast man and not a standup and development a more positive attitude towards what he’s good at and be done with it and Adam needs to catch AIDS and die.

Reminder that whenever anyone brings up the fact that stav very clearly pays for views and hired a marketing team to push is material online, suddenly anyone that has anything remotely positive to say about stav disappears. Stavs Netflix special is a dud just like his youtube one, his solo podcast is failing and all the buzz around him had completely fizzled out. Nick and Adam won.

90% of his shitlib screaming whenever Nick said something vaguely racist on Cumtown was fear of losing the Patreon bucks
now he's hopped on the last mobility scooter toward the chocolate fountain of safe-edgy comedy on Netflix

    >people pretending nick mullen's special was hilarious because they like cumtown

the cirque du soleil bit was the only remotely funny part, stav at least is actually making a minimum effort and is putting in the work

mullen is literally crying on podcasts about how he only does a special because theres money potential in it, and cries on his own show (with shit unfunny skits) about how he cannot escape being perceived the "cumtown guy"

mullen is a homosexual tbh, stav is a disgusting pig but at least he's still making a minimum effort to make people laugh the best way he knows how, mullen can do that too but he's such a gay he refuses to do his bits that made him popular and succesfull in the first place

you made a CUM podcast homosexual, just accept it and make some jokes about being gay, do a fricking impression you unfunny homosexual

His comedy hasn’t really progressed since cumtown, kind of sad really. Nicks comedy makes cumtown seem more like a side project, not a main gig.

it was fricking terrible. once again, all his jokes were just im fat, i love sex and get pussy, i have a tiny uncircumsized penis, he did a 15 minute "muh airline made me miss my flight" bit, and then had a few plants to do crowd work, one of whom was talking about having sex on dick pills with a muscle woman
