Strauss : [taps the Gadget] Nice.
Oppenheimer : I couldn't find any deuterium.
Strauss : Well, Doctor?
Oppenheimer : Oh, it's "Father of the Atomic Bomb" now. We really started something. Bent Japs running scared, hope on the streets.
Strauss : But?
Oppenheimer : We still haven't picked up Stalin, or half the commies that Russia unleashed.
Strauss : We will. We can bring America back.
Oppenheimer : What about escalation?
Strauss : Escalation?
Oppenheimer : We develop fusion, they start developing fission. We start dropping A-Bombs, they build H-Bombs.
Strauss : And?
Oppenheimer : And you're chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. Nominated for secretary of Commerce. Now, take this guy.
[pulling out a file]
Oppenheimer : Young Senator from Massachusetts, has a taste for the theatrical, like you. Leaves a calling card.
[shows Strauss a John F. Kennedy Congressional calling card]
Strauss : I'll look into it.
[turns away and walks to the edge of the roof]
Oppenheimer : I never told you what I said to Einstein that day.
Strauss : [looks back at Oppy] And you'll never have to.
The whole Strauss thing is so ridiculous. Like the entire movie was made around this "I don't think about you at all" reveal. Almost Indian tiktoker tier writing.
I found that to be great, it shows how little and unimportant politics are when you’re literally facing nuclear world destruction. Oppenheimer and the gang are out here changing the world and touching the power of God and Strauss is fricking around trying to take away security clearance that doesn’t really matter anymore for stupid reasons
Bruh what? Did we watch the same movie? It goes to great lengths to show how you can't look at science as divorced from politics and ethics. He builds the thing but ultimately has no control over it because of the politics and spends the rest of the movie trying to get back some slight measure of control.
Yeah because the politics are stupid and ruled by petty men who aren’t splitting the atom and aren’t interfacing with the real fabric of the universe to create a new age, Strauss is a baby b***h in all this despite his power, that was interesting to me
>I AM NOT CRAZY! I KNEW HE BADMOUTHED ME TO EINSTEIN! AS IF EINSTEIN WOULD EVER JUST WALK PASS BY ME. NEVER, NEVER! I JUST- I JUST COULDN'T PROVE IT! YOU THINK THIS IS SOMETHING? YOU THNK THIS IS BAD? THIS? THIS CHICANERY? HE'S DONE WORSE. THAT RUSSIAN NUKE TEST! ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT A COUNTRY JUST HAPPENS TO HAVE SIMILAR RADIATION READING TO OUR NUKE? NO! HE ORCHESTRATED IT! OPPIE! "BUT NOT OUR OPPIE! COULDN'T BE PRECIOUS *OPPIE*!"
>he just told Einstein I was gay, didnt he? He’s telling all the scientists I’m gay, I knew it. He looked at me like I was walking garbage. I will destroy him
Explain to me why the frick it matters if Oppenheimer loses his security clearance after the bomb, and who gives a shit about the state of his reputation when he’s already did the damn thing and made the bomb
He built the atomic bomb, there is absolutely no amount of ruin short of actual nuclear winter that could make that a bad career. I’m sure money can be tricky if you lose your income and it might be dissociating to lose the scientific community, but it’s like trying to slander Prometheus after the fact, who cares? And they’re not even eating out his liver
Explain to me why the frick it matters if Oppenheimer loses his security clearance after the bomb, and who gives a shit about the state of his reputation when he’s already did the damn thing and made the bomb
He tried to warn against building H-bombs which he couldn't do if the glowies ruined his reputation. It was meaningless though because obviously the Russians would build their own in the end. He thought "well if WE don't build one then surely they will respect that and stop working on THEIRS".
He can be an activist without his security clearance, and his security clearance didn’t help him prevent the H bomb being made when the whole premise is everyone including the president wants one. Maybe it’s just retrospect but I’m sitting there thinking well why not just lose your clearance and retire and make your videos, he wasn’t really needed to prevent nuclear war anyways
His q-clearance is largely irrelevant. It's basically just strauss being an vindicative frick and trying to tarnish his reputation.
Like the guy in the film said, he was a consultant. If you didn't want him to know about le top secret nuclear programs, then they didn't need to consult him.
It obviously backfired gloriously cos he was fricking famous, and strauss was a literalwho.
*"Harry Truman Dorris Day" starts playing*
Is it even possible to ignite the atmosphere? That thought in the movie scared me and I think about it a lot
if you break nitrogen bonds, it will combust with oxygen
If you light mercury on fire, it can burn even in nitrogen dioxide, because it does this.
No, it was a hypothetical scenario they thought about but realized was almost certainly Impossible to happen, it makes for a good movie scene though.
chances are near zero
>Zero would be nice
>dog whimpers and puts his paws on his eyes
>canned laughter
>grandma starts raping
Why did he appear from the shadows to give oppie advice?
Because Einstein was a major showboater who wanted to insert himself in any popular scientific discovery
>oh so you might envelope the world in fire?
>ahh i wont do that maths to double check you tehe i hate maths!!!

Kino
They didn't say that.

Strauss banging his hands on the table and screaming WHY DID YOU REDEEM was a great scene though

zero cultural impact. wanted 3 hours of my life on this shit
>he just told Einstein I was gay, didnt he? He’s telling all the scientists I’m gay, I knew it. He looked at me like I was walking garbage. I will destroy him
>and my son?
>spend two seconds on science in the film
Why was Mark Twain in the Oppenheimer movie
>*shits his pants in the closing credits*
What did Nolan mean by this
Explain to me why the frick it matters if Oppenheimer loses his security clearance after the bomb, and who gives a shit about the state of his reputation when he’s already did the damn thing and made the bomb
It means he loses his job and career ruined.

In politics perception is reality. Also remember it was the Red Scare era.
Was Oppenheimer necessary at all to nuclear safety or wasn’t it material desire to prevent mutually assured destruction
anon he was on "trial" because he was a suspected communist and traitor of the country. People took that shit seriously at the time
They weren’t trying to blackbag him, they just wanted him out of the government which would probably have been fine
me mum watched this film and said it was fricking boring
so im not going to watch it either
because shes likely right
it does look fricking boring
It was good I only fell asleep once
still havent watched this
>3 hours
and never will
