This movie would of been much better if it involved going on viking kino adventures instead of revenge story #1,333,337
This movie has a good start, a good raid, and a good lava fight. Everything else is a chore.
the draugr scene was cool
It made me think of skyrim
Movie peaked there
It's basically revenge story #000000000001
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amleth
You gotta be the dumbest blackest gorilla Black person on this website
>12th century is the first revenge story
Every vikang larper I meet seems to be dumber than the last
It would've been better if it wasn't directed by a limp wristed homosexual
>casts no Black folk or browns in his movies
Nah he’s based. Cope
anya is brown. she passed as white in VVitch but definitely not in the north man.
Yes, and Black folk are pale, and Asians are purple! I think your eyes are fricking moronic bro
>no blacks
>directs all the whites to act like blacks
not the win you think it is
It's not acting like blacks, it's being uncivilized. The reason you associate it with blacks is because they're the only race that never managed to civilize themselves and still largely act this way.
This movie would have been much better if they didn't cast a bogged roastie #1,333,337 as a prominent female role in a period piece. totally ruined the immersion whenever she came on screen.
You're not *meant* to root for anyone, like all Eggers films it's more a case study in cultural anthropology than a straightforward heroic story.
Ignorance is ok for those who will imprve by learning but Dullards want a good guy bad guy or Cowboys vs Indians story. Hamlet was a stolen story by William Shakespeare and Shakespeare could not make sense of Viking or Danish culture or 'Amleth' so made it homosexual and Hammy theater musical play instead, but Shakespeare having little original or inspiration of his own at this time instead drawing upon the 12th-century works of Saxo Grammaticus. The Viking they were perhaps almost out of their minds on Booze and Mushrooms, brutal times indeed so you are not supposed to truly root for anyone.
>Pagans bad!!! Christians good!!!
frick this movie
Did you even watch the movie? The opposite is more true.
it literally shows his son in a vision becoming a loser nobody and his daughter becoming Saint Olga of Kiev wearing the crown of Heaven.
What's your point?
Throughout the film it showed how brutal and juvenile the culture was.
Family members murdering each other to steal their wives, raiding villages and burning all the women and children alive, whites enslaving fellow whites. Then it shows Olga of Kiev and it screams a pro-Christian message.
also that village raid being lead by a woman on horseback screaming demands at them was cringe.
>I WANT STWONG ONES NOT WEAK ONES!
shut up b***h
>raiding villages and burning all the women and children alive, whites enslaving fellow whites
I don't know about the first one but these are things that vikings actually did
yeah and you can see on the main character's face that he doesn't care for it, he's there to get to his uncle ultimately
My bad, I just realised I misread what you wrote. It does show Christianity as being better than paganism. Forgive me I have dyslexia.
>juvenile
Female argument; a term used to discourage behavior that makes men feel fulfilled to a woman’s disadvantage
>his daughter becoming Saint Olga of Kiev
i didn't even realize this, holy based
Kyiv
TZD
Seethe
>He only kills pagans in this movie and falls in love with a Christian woman.
>His daughter ends up being St. Olga of Kiev, who spread Christianity and is the patron saint of widows and converts.
>The message of this film was basically paganism bad, Christianity good.
Imagine trusting ~~*Eggers)). Another dishonest piece of shit movie.
>white culture is sniffing each others farts
wow so based we have to go back
Vikings were the closest European culture to fit the “ white Black person “ moniker
They made boats that could not only cross the open seas, but also go up shallow rivers. You're gonna have to go into detail as to how they were White trash. kthx
so did native indians they're called canoes its not that special
Try taking a canoe across the North Sea.
its really not that impressive to skipjump from island to island, its not like they went straight across the atlantic
how do you think indians got to america, a literal island?
Anon.... you know that the Bering Strait used to be a crossable landmass right?
yeah i'm sure the indians who look exactly like south east asians and pacific islanders came over on a land bridge from siberia a million years ago.
>look exactly like south east asians and pacific islanders
They look a lot like the people of eastern Russia, sir or madame.
They kinda resemble East Asians, and have a lot of overlap with the shaman mystic beliefs of steppe people (like the Mongols)
A land bridge. Are you really this ignorant?
Irish did it by island hopping from Ireland to northern Canada, but it wasn't in a damned canoe.
Olga outdoes him in kill count, so its still based. The movie is never judgmental about any of the kills, its just a reality of life
>~~*Eggers*~~
You either don't know what you're talking about, or you're a moron tourist that doesn't know what ~~**~~ means. Or both.
Every white person I disagree with is israeli
thank you anon. you're not a israelite right? i just agreed with you
You'll disagree with me eventually. We're all israelites here.
Didn't Olga have a habit of burying people alive? Paganism won and corrupted Christianity the moment local nobility started being venerated as saints
aren’t you meant to be all might makes right? why are you such a sensitive little gay?
The pagans lost, Christians won
yes
>NNNOOOOO NOT AN OUTSIDE PERSPECTIVE
that's the inside perspective
but paganism is bad and Christianity is good?
>Pagans bad!!! Christians good!!!
Yes? This movie is not that but that's the universal truth
in the case of norse paganism how can you even argue this? the christians were spreading literacy and civilisation and these snowBlack folk were determined to destroy that wherever they found it. they left no written records whatsoever
Not necessarily. Not the whole time anyway. The fact you're asking this question shows how shit modern day movies are.
You're just supposed to enjoy the slop not think about it
MC was a total loser cuck
You're supposed to go watch Laurence Olivier's Hamlet instead.
>not Jude Law's stage Hamlet
pleb
I tried watching it a couple of times, but just couldn't. I don't even remember why. I enjoy Vikings and The Last Kingdom, but even those have their limits. Vikings got infested by feminism and The Last Kingdom somehow got sub-Saharan Africans at the table in 10th century Scotland. I'll take Auslander over The Northman any day for my dose of Viking times.
>Vikings got infested by feminism
even this was thankfully mitigated by the occasional shield-maiden getting a sword through her throat or being put in her place by a man. i can't imagine how fricking shitty the sequel was
>Vikings
>wearing modern spandex underwear
dropped
I liked it because it had a protagonist that would have actually been a hero in the eyes of the vikings and not in today's moral terms. Interesting perspective that was actually carried out to completion with no twist mid way to soften the moral abrasiveness to modern sensibilities. Aesthetic af too.
This anon gets what I'm gesturing at here
. It's an attempt to portray the way a particular people lived, and thought about the world. Same with the VVitch. The Lighthouse has a bit of that in there, but it's more of a character study.
I get what he's going for, but if you want me to stay more than superficially invested in the plot and characters you need to build some level of emotional report other than >im so mad rn, especially as the main characters are murderous buttholes. No matter how much trauma you put them through it's gonna be hard for me to care about them.
Honestly his weakest movie so far. I hope he gets his shit together for Nosferatu.
unironically 2deep4u
Oh, enlighten me. Let's hear your high IQ take.
explaining it ruins it. like with a good joke. you get it or you don't.
pfft. Figures.
seriously though, you've never had the feeling that you HAVE to do something, to act a certain way, because the universe itself seems to demand it, and you can act in no other way? the movie hits you over the head with it pretty hard several times. it's not about the characters as people, it's closer to something like how they have to act as part of the world they're in. but if you can't feel this way yourself then you'll never understand it, you can't empathize.
>the movie hits you over the head with it pretty hard several times.
it's so nice to watch a movie where the characters don;t pretend to not want to drive the plot forward, e.g. "what me take revenge? no way, i'm just a humble guy i'm not the main character here!"
>textbook schizophrenia
I don't know that feel no
I'm the anon you're responding to; I get why you found it difficult to invest in. Despite being the film he got a (relatively) big-budget for, and the advertising setting it up as a semi-blockbuster adventure, it's his most academic film. I loved it, but I'm a sucker for explorations of setting and culture - if you're hoping for a character study or rollicking action historical, I can understand why it would disappoint.
>viking says "constantinople" instead of "miklagard"
is this hair achievieable natty?
Post hair
I loved the scene where he is stealthing around the village at night. The grass waving in the wind and reflecting the moon looked so beautiful.
Guess how I know you are not now, or ever will be culturally a Nord?
If you were looking for a sympathetic character you won’t find one. It is a movie about the stoicism of life. The unforgiving cycle of damnation that until we die we are all just a victim of. We can go out on our terms, or we can go out old and frail.
shut the frick up varg
truly we wuz vikangz.
back to twitter with you, gaylord
>historical/medieval kino
>half the cast is bogged
why? why do casting directors do this
not to mention the female lead is clearly not white.
Omg he's called bear wolf!!!!
(Beo wulf)
aesthetic as frick movie
This movie is a litmus test for how Aryan you are.
The mother was evil. I didn't care what happened at the end so long she died
its an exploration of the Odin cult with high attention to detail, and works on that level. sort of movie a high school teacher wheels in.
https://joshlink.substack.com/p/religion-and-mysticism-in-the-northman
>vikings
white people nonsense
yawn
>be me
>tried to watch this film
>see an actor with braces
shut it off right then and there
I liked the movie, but that actually did confuse me.
some vikings filed grooves into their teeth, it's not clear exactly why
Huh, I did not know that.
At least they didn't chop their own dicks off and remove their buccal fat and inject a bunch of silicon into their boobs and ass
that doesn't seem very smart but is there a way to get influences of modern day to bring this style back?
It was not smart but they didn't really know better in those times, plus their diets weren't full of sugar and their culture didn't value long healthy lives anyway.
Some idiots file their teeth in present day too.
Some speculate that the grooves were intended to hold onto colored dyes or wax temporarily, which is why the valkyrie in the movie has such dark colored grooves.
>not clear exactly why
like all ritual scarring, the point is mainly to show you can tolerate pain. secondarily it serves as a group identifier.
why would any sane person want to show they can tolerate pain when just trying to survive is painful enough. seems dumb.
shut up nerd. they probably just thought it looked cool.
its because they used to eat meat off the bone like corn on the cob and got scratch marks
Nothing done in this movie wasn’t done better in Conan the Barbarian, 40 years earlier.
t. Non-white
Was I meant to care about his struggle?
He literally raided some poor village and had children burnt alive, not by accident, but rounding them up, pulling them from their mother's and throwing them into a building to burn alive
I hated him, I wanted him to get anal cancer and die horribly.
You're supposed to care in a big brain white people are bad cycle of violence he's just a poor boy sort of way
like a moral inversion of Conan basically
1. you don't know the geopolitical context of WHY he burned the children, so you have no right to judge him based on your coddled modern bugman life
2. he was clearly of a far more noble cut than anyone around him and didn't take pleasure in the violence he partook in out of necessity. his whole character alludes to the coming christianization and civilization of the pagan nord Black folk and he has an innate desire for it but no outlet. he frees the girl from being sacrificed to an idol. he proclaims Odin the "allfather" who, while still a false god, is one closer archetypally to the true Christian God, over the lesser false god idol that his uncle worships.
>you don't know the geopolitical context of WHY he burned the children
Yes we do, the Vikings practiced opportunistic raiding both from coasts and rivers; the particularly brutal acts during the raids are a result of the berserker rituals the raiders undertake before embarking. They're hopped up on adrenaline.
>you don't know WHY he had to burn children and babies alive
Really, Black person?
>Tell me you're a christgay without telling me you're a christgay
I prefer my viking kino this way
extremely under-rated post
The Icelandic sagas often involved protagonists who were c**ts
Honestly I think a lot of loved to be shocked and horrified at how terrible the characters were
not really, its an epic historic story that kinda replicates a historic mindset, not a 21st century heroic action film.
why does he have slant eyes?
Not really. It's kind of Boorman's Excalibur, more of an aesthetic experience that a story you're meant to get invested into.
Are people genuinely so fricked in the head that they can't get into a story unless the protag is 100% a good guy? What is this need to identify and root for a character? Sometimes a story is just exciting or interesting.
Generally even if the protagonist is a morally reprehensible guy (like in most gangster movies for example) the audience is still expected to identify with him on some level. And it's more the result of how the story is presented than the character itself. But The Northman isn't interested in that kind of participation from the viewers, it keeps some distance from them, you're meant to witness the story not to get emotionally involved in it.
>can't get into a story unless the protag is 100% a good guy?
I didn't need him to be 100% a good guy,but i won't care for a guys "revenge" who burns children
The revenge demanded it. Goycattle unironically can't understand.
No, just watching an old legend get translated to the big screen was enough for me
Yeah, it was pretty realistic depiction of Scandi's, they're all buttholes.
Vinland Saga did it better.
>Farming arc
Yikes
>filtered
Oof
It was great up until the point where Cnut decides he doesn’t need the farm anymore despite the fact that the he needed it to feed his army or could have just drawn down troops from England like his advisor initially told him too and in the end he does so it was an entire moronic goose chase.
I think the movie tried to show the difference/contrast between Viking and modern morality and pulled it off very well.
The heroes and villains are reversed
try hard wannabe arthows Conan. Jut watch Conan.
