Were there parents actually offended by Turning Red, or was it just an internet phenomenon? Kind of similar to that parent who tweeted Brad Bird to complain about Incredibles 2.
Were there parents actually offended by Turning Red, or was it just an internet phenomenon? Kind of similar to that parent who tweeted Brad Bird to complain about Incredibles 2.
how would I know?
People only complained because the protag is a girl on puberty and people hate female puberty for some reason.
If was a movie about a boy puberty people would praise the hell of it
Well people did praise the hell out of it, if you consider movie critics people.
Movie critics liked cuties and basic movie goers hated last and first men. I don't think you should take into account either of these two groups
>Movie critics liked cutie
That's because they actually watched the movie, and didn't base their opinion around the marketing.
That said, i still don't care for Cuties, it just isn't what the internet decided it was without watching it. I blame Netflix.
from what little media ive seen on the subject thats entirely because that media handles the subject very poorly
It also doesn't help that the movie itself is very boring.
Men would never make a movie centered around a boy's penis, that's a mental illness of women
This movie wasn't about her vegana and sitcoms have been doing puberty episodes for decades. Growing Pains even had a wet dream episode.
It wasn't literally about her vegana but a heavy metaphor for menstruation. A boy version would be a metaphor about him uncontrollable turning literally rock hard while he ends up foaming from the mouth before turning back to normal. People would compare it to a dumb seth rogen movie like sausage party.
Hop off your fricking cross already
Puberty is more than genitals. Maybe you haven't gone through it yet.
My problem is that the director literally just made a movie about herself. Women always do this. Men almost never do.
>Men almost never do.
But when they do it's usually weird and everyone calls it out
I don't know man. How many modern movies feature male puberty in any capacity? Hell there's hardly any new media at all about it. You can't just make a story about the awkwardness of popping boners everywhere or wanting everything to touch your junk
Silence, gynocentrist. There is literally nothing about male puberty. Our society shuns and hides male bodies, we could never make media about any body positivity or any puberty besides female body or puberty
Could you imagine if there was a gender swapped version of turning red where a boy has powers that were a metaphor for getting uncontrollable erections while he went through hormonal puberty lusting after twitch streamers, and the movie ended with the teenage boy using his metaphor for uncontrollable erections to fight his dad's metaphor for uncontrollable erections? People would legit demand this movie be illegal to watch
>and the movie ended with the teenage boy using his metaphor for uncontrollable erections to fight his dad's metaphor for uncontrollable erections
You got me. That was funny
Fund it.
>Our society shuns and hides male bodies
Excuse fricking you?
Now find me mainstream celebration of male bodies regardless of how they are. Fat, bald, short or just plain ugly and still told they are valid
Did you miss the whole dad bod meme from a few years back?
these are not fat, bald, and short. Where is the male version of Lizzo being called a 10?
homie whos calling Lizzo a 10? Even she acknowledges her weight is an issue at times. No one is advocating for people to be 300+ pounds to "look good". Anyone who does is certifiably insane
You put those goal posts right back where you found them, mister
You put that goalpost yourself by posting a conventionally attractive man and then stating that was my goalpost
You said nothing of conventionally attractiveness in your post, b***h. All you said was we as a society shun male bodies when we objectively do not. And to your actual point, just because you don't see bald guys in Vogue does NOT mean they are persona non grata in general. There is more to life than what stuck up b***hes in Italy define it to be.
Unironically close your web browser, turn off whatever computational device you're utilizing and go touch some grass, for the love of God.
I am not doing this nuh nuh you meant this! bullshit
I will clearly state now what my position is: our society does not celebrate male bodies or encourages body acceptance the way it celebrates female bodies which is why I said male version of Big Red would be unthinkable
The very fact that this man has had a long and prosperous carrerr in both film and television says otherwise. We don't celebrate male bodies because when the frick have we ever NEEDED to? Men historically haven't had to prove anything to anyone, they just did the shit they needed or wanted to do, simple as. We celebrate women's bodies as a means to make up for the whole "centuries upon centuries of being considered literal property" thing. They have a lot of ground to cover before things are "equal" again.
It's the same reason we have a Black History Month or a Native American Heritage whatever: underdogs have to work a lot harder to be seen on general goddam prinicple. Is it fair or right? Absolutely not, but it's the reality we happen to all share. Change it, if it upsets you so much.
>Men historically haven't had to prove anything to anyone
Lol
I liked it, but I could understand it bothering people too. TEENAGE GIRLS GET HORNY TOO, DEAL WITH IT!
I don't think the horniness was the main complaint (even if a boy going "AWOOGA!" to a cashier would be seen as a harmful message, whereas Mei doing it is empowering).
No I think most people would realize this plot is literally about prostitution with an obvious metaphor.
>I can show off my RED PANDA in the bathroom for money!
>People love it when I bring out my RED PANDA out at parties!
>MY PANDA, MY CHOICE!
>even if a boy going "AWOOGA!" to a cashier would be seen as a harmful message, whereas Mei doing it is empowering
I don't think that scene was meant to be "empowering." It was meant to be funny and embarrassing. It's not like she's proud of doing it after.
Was she proud of "are you a triangle, because you acute!"
Yeah, that's a good line if you're in Junior High.
Did...did you not watch the film?
Yes.
You forgot your meds, again.
You forgot how to post on Cinemaphile.
Uninformed and vibes based?
What is this supposed to mean?
>You forgot how to post on Cinemaphile.
>"Uninformed and vibes based?"
The implication is that the only way to post correctly on Cinemaphile is to post uninformed opinions.
No you dumbass
If you post moron shit like "Turning Red is about prostitution" and then tell someone calling you a schizo homosexual to "learn how to post on Cinemaphile" either you're implying that this is moron central or that you're trolling and don't believe the moron shit you post.
>either you're implying that this is moron central or that you're trolling and don't believe the moron shit you post
........so, first day on Cinemaphile, then?
Which is it? Is this moron central and posts that are too well thought out don't belong here?
Yes
That wasn't me.
The only embaressment that I get is that it was even written. It doesn't feel sympathetic. No kind of embaressment does in a movie or show.
Really? You've never felt embarrassed for some stupid shit you've done? Never? Not even once? Really? What a blessed life you've led, good sir.
No I did get embaressed. But never that made me sympathetic to a character from a movie or shosmw
*show
Accidentally nearly wrote the captcha into the comment field
Sounds like autism on your part.
>You need medication if you can recognize a pro-choice slogan in a kid's movie
How about not chemically lobotomizing people smarter and more independent than your dumb ass instead
>I can't take meds because I'm better than you
Unironically the kind of thinking that requires meds at some point
I thought the point was that you actually shouldn't do the meds.
You have brain damage
>No I think most people would realize this plot is literally about prostitution with an obvious metaphor.
The metaphor doesn't make sense because her mother went crazy with puberty and hurt her family. She didn't go crazy with prostitution. The mood swings associated with "your body changing" is the more clear plot here.
Also the "my panda my choice" bit would have gone over better if they didn't need to pull their criticism of plastics scene which shows her as an activist. Her being an idiot kid who doesn't fully understand issues and how inappropriate her saying "my panda my choice" is would have been a better joke. Now it kind of comes out of nowhere.
C
Was there more than one person that complained? Yes
It's a film about being a sex-obsessed Millennial Tumblr user filtered through childhood
What's the point of the panda metaphor when the movie brings up actual period anyways.
I don't think the panda is actually a metaphor for periods. I just think it's more to do with how emotions become more intense with puberty. I mean, it's not like she turns into the panda for one week a month. It's triggered by emotion. Think about the emotions that tend to trigger her changing.
Exhilaration, embarrassment, arousal, anger. All emotions that make people blush. That's why it's called "Turning Red." The Panda isn't a metaphor for periods (if it was, are we to assume that means her mother, grandmother and aunties all had hysterectomies?), it's a metaphor for extreme emotions. the kind that make someone turn red.
Repressing one's emotions is a part of Chinese culture, especially for women. Look a the mom and aunties. they are always prim, proper, and perfectly calm and collected. They keep their pandas "contained," meaning they keep their stronger emotions repressed and in check. Not Mei, though She chooses to express herself, and instead of repression, opts to learn to control them while still expressing them. That's the panda.
Then what's with the whole period thing? Why was that put there?
Because
>ha ha she's holding maxipads to her daughter in front of her friends isn't that embarrassing ha ha
The drama writes itself, honestly
It's kinda cringey actually
Cringey in what way? I find it makes Mei sympathetic because of the embarrassment.
Yes, that's the goal. Cringe can serve a purpose like any other emotion
Because periods are part of puberty for girls, and the misunderstanding is funny, and relatable for a lot of female audience members.
That's kinda sad
It's called being a human being, you feckless ghoul. Jesus...
Nobody but poltards were offended, and that's a good thing
There are parents that are offended by anything that 'jailbreaks' their kid from being spirit-broken, and becoming hopeful.
What does that mean? How is that achieved?
A very vocal minority was legit pissed about it. Most people didn't care, and the film ended up doing well enough on streaming that Disney markets it quite a bit.
Yeah of Disney's streaming originals it routinely gets higher ratings than Luca. It's a well established part of the catalog. Someone's kids are watching it over and over, just like most Disney movies
Yeah, it's a decent flick. And I'm sure a lot of kids, especially tween girls, can relate.
Cringe humor has always been a staple.
Yeah, puberty is kind of sad.
a LOT of estrogen on the thread already, close your legs, it smells like fish
We get it, you'll never know a woman's touch.
You sound like you've ironically never been near a woman
Yeah, I don't go near women ironically. I only go near women with sincerity.
And likely get slapped often.
Because it wasn't funny.
Where do you think you are?
So you actually wanted softcore child pornograpy? Or what?
Wow, having a diffrent opinion doesn't make me a human being?
I'll pray for you, anon. Truly, I will
I'm actually fine. Thanks forthe offer. Now you can jump out the building.
>So you actually wanted softcore child pornograpy? Or what?
No, i just don't think it was very well constructed, and I think the cinematic choices they made undercut the message of the film. Something Netflix took great advantage of when creating promotional material for the film.
>And likely get slapped often.
Nah. Women, on the whole, are actually a pretty tolerant bunch, so long as you aren't an absolute gorilla when you try and talk to them. That's part of the reason i don't think I'll ever understand incels.
Neither will I, but internet really does ruin people and their perception of reality. Me just being on twitter made me want to nuke half of the planet.
Yeah, quitting twitter (and Cinemaphile, aside from Cinemaphile) was the best decision I ever made for my own mental health.
I'd actually rather quit Cinemaphile. It's kinda shit here honestly. Outside of the "coomer" threads.
I wasn't talking about that anywhere. I was pointing out that the poster sounds like a jerk.
>I'd actually rather quit Cinemaphile. It's kinda shit here honestly. Outside of the "coomer" threads.
It is, but it's the kind of shitty that makes me laugh instead of making me angry.
Welp, there's the door, sport. good luck and God bless
Damn I just realised that I'm here because I wanted to get that one stupid pic of kane being hugged by charlie. Why am I even arguing here?
Anon...stop. Just stop. The world is not as bleak and cutthroat as the frickers on your Discords make it out to be. You are also not the absolute pinnacle of existence, you're a sack of meat waiting to rot. So frick it, go ask that girl out. Will you get shot down? Maybe, but maybe not. Who the hell actually knows?
Just stop whining about everything already, for the love of God
What does being funny have to do with anything?
>a joke not being funny
That it's a really important part of the joke?
Are you having a stroke? I didn't mention anything about the comedy
It should have had a scene where the teacher wheels a CRT television into the classroom right before the second plane hits the world trade center
Completely unrealistic that it wasn't included
What the frick is this thread
Cinemaphile attempting to understand females
My sister didn't like Turning Red either though
My older sister is millennial who grew up in Toronto and had an overbearing mother. She couldn't relate to the movie at all either. The "you don't like it because chud" is total cope. The movie was just shit and it lost disney over a hundred million. Usually shitty movies can at least make it's money back at the very least
I wonder how many massive bombs Pixar has left in them before Disney decides the name doesn't carry weight any more and liquidates what's left?
I wonder too because it's not like these guys have infinite money that can make them continue making flops forever. Maybe the well will run dry, maybe they'll get bailed by the government, maybe someone will buy them out.
I remember when people used to get mocked for making their own self insert works and would call out things like this as a vanity project, but now it just stunning and brave. It's all about me me me instead of prioritizing the story. it's narcissistic as frick
I only remember a small sect of soccer moms and reviewers that didn't like nuPixar being blown out of proportion. Outside of the internet spaces, this movie came and left as another forgettable modern Pixar movie.
But I would find it funny if there was a teenage version of this called "Getting hard" where there was a metaphor for teenage boy going through puberty and got metaphors for morning wood and random hard ons. That would make people freak out across the board
>Kind of similar to that parent who tweeted Brad Bird to complain about Incredibles 2
QRD? Never heard of this
https://www.cartoonbrew.com/ideas-commentary/brad-bird-incredibles-2-is-not-a-kids-movie-161591.html
Turning Red is just a worse retelling of the premise of Luca (teenagers with parental issues getting in trouble with SOCIETY™ and doing all sorts of awkward things because s/he can turn into a monster that others consider dangerous).
I want to sniff those leggings.
It was pseudo puritans, like Mumkey Jones and E;R the onluly ones saying that it was a little girl "flaunting her ass" and getting offended at the period jokes
Parents? No
Sweaty 28 single white men? Absolutely
I don't know if annoyed parents were the sole cause, but Turning Reddit made only 19 million against a 200 million budget on release. It didn't really have an audience besides mentally ill twitter users and pedophiles from here. I don't think it's possible to take Pixar seriously any more. They lack both writing quality and animation skill.
Pixar(and disney) used to be the industry standard that you were sure that you and the family would have a good time watching. Each movie felt like an event but now we'd sooner watch whatever illumination or dreamworks is shittng out.
One of the bigger problems with movies like turning red is that it's made by stunted adults that are terminally online for stunted adults that are terminally online. Who in their right mind would think that kids would like a dumbed down version of interstellar with a shitty version of buzz lightyear or the vanity project of a women making an idealized version of her childhood?
It's going to be funny to see DreamWorks restart Shrek amidst another malaise era.
Modern Pixar looks like what you'd get if you told an AI to generate a person in Pixar style.
The main thing I didn't like about it was that it was supposed to be a period piece in the early 00s but felt modern as frick. They try to cram in as many old things like nokia phones and tamagachis but it's all superficial. A zoomer can relate more to the childhood in this movie than a millennial/genx
>Kind of similar to that parent who tweeted Brad Bird to complain about Incredibles 2.
Context?
Suburban moms get offended at everything because they have no real problems to care about, that's why their opinions should literally never be taken seriously at any point.
the woke think kids can consent. that's why they release crap like this.
The people who defended this film would just insult anyone who made any sort of criticism.
>You don't like it because you're not a teenage girl!
>You don't like it because you don't understand women!
>Were there parents actually offended by Turning ...
Yes
You're not a parent and there's nothing that could convince me otherwise.
