They were almost the most accurate and honestly, relatable characters of nerd culture. It starts out as a recreation of nerd culture, set in the mid-'90s. The characters are "losers" but know their stuff and manage to have a good (albeit fricked-up) time hanging out together. As the comic progresses, the characters get more bitter and nasty, and become objects of hate instead of cheeky reverence. You can see when Evan Dorkin started hating/cringing about being part of what he was writing about, and the entire tone turned sour and irredeemable. It's one of my favorite comics.

One of the biggest appeals of this show was how the mcs are all teenagers without money who live with their parents, we've all been there so it's by default more relatable than the trio of doctors and one engineer that Big Bang Theory had, also alongside that, because they were teenagers that meant they had to steal from their parents, smaller children and also shoplift to get what they want, in BBT the protags are rarely ever hurting for money so they can buy something like the Boba Fett from the Eltingville pilot as if it was buying a carton of milk. And one of my favourites is how this show understood how torture porn should be made, the mcs are terrible, stupid and selfish people so anything bad that happens to them is because of their own actions, nobody, not the show or the people within it treat them as good people and they are not rewarded for their actions (reminder, Howard Wolowitz, the perv in BBT got married and had a daughter)

best I can explain the "nerd girl" smell is "musty"? Not like typical guy BO but just kinda like they have the same smell as you'd expect the carpet in their rooms to have. Not even particularly dirty, just like the default smell of a human being that doesn't go to any extraneous lengths to use perfumed soaps or sprays. Once you've got it down to a science, then practice drawing your figures in your favorite shows' art styles and/or creating your own art style.
Also devote at least an hour of your time per day to drawing.
NEVER skip that last part or you'll risk becoming lazy and losing your skills that you've made along the way!

if there's one thing I loved about Dorkin's original art that the cartoon didn't quite capture was the gritty, greasy texture he was able to create. It really added weight to the comic and I appreciate the attention to all the nasty detail.

I always liked Eltingville since my dad was a big comic nerd, still is, has a webcomic about comics and everything. I grew up knowing a lot of trivia and collectibles as a kid, stuff I obviously wasn’t allowed to play with but yeah.
He has some weird friends too, pinup artists and self published comics guys who without meaning to be were just a little off. Especially around a teenage girl like me.
Anyways, I think one of the girls for my thing might have a dad that’s a nod to one of the Eltingville guys.
It's interesting to compare Eltingville with Dan Clowes' similarly vicious Young Dan Pussey.
Pussey was a similar, but less toxic, comic nerd from an earlier generation, and the Elkingville Club guys probably collected his books once he turned pro. I don't think he would have fit in with them if he was their age, he was too much of a little b***h socially, and they would have been a terrible influence on him and probably derailed his later career with their contrarian elitist bullshit, they were collectors and fans, never creators themselves, unlike their Shelbyville versions, the Northwest Comix Collective, and I can tell you, the alternatives in the 90's were exactly that bad, those buttholes irl made the Elkingville Club look like the fricking Brady Bunch. Can you imagine a whole generation of desperately edgy art-school kid cartoonists who hated comics, hated cartoonists, and hated comic fans? All LARPing as Underground comics, which didn't exist by then and had died out with head shops? It was so fricking bad, I've spent 20 years in an extended cringe state from my part in that shitnado.
I can tell you this: Art School is a lot of the time people who are already able to afford it, acting underground and niche.

It starts out as a recreation of nerd culture, set in the mid-'90s. The characters are "losers" but know their stuff and manage to have a good (albeit fricked-up) time hanging out together. As the comic progresses, the characters get more bitter and nasty, and become objects of hate instead of cheeky reverence. You can see when Evan Dorkin started hating/cringing about being part of what he was writing about, and the entire tone turned sour and irredeemable. It's one of my favorite comics.

One of the biggest appeals of this show was how the mcs are all teenagers without money who live with their parents, we've all been there so it's by default more relatable than the trio of doctors and one engineer that Big Bang Theory had, also alongside that, because they were teenagers that meant they had to steal from their parents, smaller children and also shoplift to get what they want, in BBT the protags are rarely ever hurting for money so they can buy something like the Boba Fett from the Eltingville pilot as if it was buying a carton of milk. And one of my favourites is how this show understood how torture porn should be made, the mcs are terrible, stupid and selfish people so anything bad that happens to them is because of their own actions, nobody, not the show or the people within it treat them as good people and they are not rewarded for their actions (reminder, Howard Wolowitz, the perv in BBT got married and had a daughter)

Maybe a fat stacy wannabe would fit in better? The group is missing a fatass counterpart to Josh. Make her overly dramatic or something, but she always comes back to her "gurl frieends".
It also got brought up in another thread how the Stacy would have a bodycount of 1, her boyfriend, while the other girls' would be much higher.

best I can explain the "nerd girl" smell is "musty"? Not like typical guy BO but just kinda like they have the same smell as you'd expect the carpet in their rooms to have. Not even particularly dirty, just like the default smell of a human being that doesn't go to any extraneous lengths to use perfumed soaps or sprays. I practiced by drawing from comics and movies I liked and then graduating to studying anatomy and form from photo ref. Like any skill, it takes a lot of work. But it's worth it, anon.

I know that this is probably gonna sound cliche but learn and master drawing pic related until you can not only memorized it but also do it as if it were nothing before you do anything else.
Once you've got it down to a science, then practice drawing your figures in your favorite shows' art styles and/or creating your own art style.
Also devote at least an hour of your time per day to drawing.
NEVER skip that last part or you'll risk becoming lazy and losing your skills that you've made along the way!

I always liked Eltingville since my dad was a big comic nerd, still is, has a webcomic about comics and everything. I grew up knowing a lot of trivia and collectibles as a kid, stuff I obviously wasn’t allowed to play with but yeah.
He has some weird friends too, pinup artists and self published comics guys who without meaning to be were just a little off. Especially around a teenage girl like me.
Anyways, I think one of the girls for my thing might have a dad that’s a nod to one of the Eltingville guys.

It's interesting to compare Eltingville with Dan Clowes' similarly vicious Young Dan Pussey.
Pussey was a similar, but less toxic, comic nerd from an earlier generation, and the Elkingville Club guys probably collected his books once he turned pro. I don't think he would have fit in with them if he was their age, he was too much of a little b***h socially, and they would have been a terrible influence on him and probably derailed his later career with their contrarian elitist bullshit, they were collectors and fans, never creators themselves, unlike their Shelbyville versions, the Northwest Comix Collective, and I can tell you, the alternatives in the 90's were exactly that bad, those buttholes irl made the Elkingville Club look like the fricking Brady Bunch. Can you imagine a whole generation of desperately edgy art-school kid cartoonists who hated comics, hated cartoonists, and hated comic fans? All LARPing as Underground comics, which didn't exist by then and had died out with head shops? It was so fricking bad, I've spent 20 years in an extended cringe state from my part in that shitnado.
I can tell you this: Art School is a lot of the time people who are already able to afford it, acting underground and niche.

Eh, some of it was accurate but some of the characters, like Clyde or the cinema guy, were just the normal dumb innocent guy and the butthole guy archetype with close to no relation to anime. Also it was a bit too short.
