They don't have the literary, film, or art background that old school creators drew upon, they just have what the old school creators made but reduced into their language of pop culture meta-humor. It's like trying to understand literature but only by reading Twitter posts that mention it. I'm a 3D gay but I've read The Animator's Survival Kit. A lot of personal anecdotes in that book, and a lot of them lament how people go through art school without developing any foundation in anatomy or realism.

youd think an aspiring cartoonist would have a very rigorous plan of study
youd think theyd get grilled in the fundamentals of drawing people, animals, machines, and nature
how to communicate ideas through motions and expressions, how to make that motion have the proper fluidity, weight, and timing
how to write a good story that effectively communicates its ideas without just telling the audience directly what to think or how to feel
how to frame a shot and the importance of the "camera" in telling the story
and how to direct a team of other cartoonists, artists, musicians, and voice actors
it should basically be film school AND art school

yet ive seen plenty of student films posted online where the student could barely even draw and characters just stand face to face talking

It's a real shame. I got an eight-week fundies course from the /ic/ torrent because I always wanted to learn to draw, and that shit is unironically more useful than an actual art school. I'm still at a /beg/ level, but compared to before, I've improved greatly.
/ic/ has good resources in general, and if you want to draw, I'd recommend going there and torrenting some of their courses. The actual board is dogshit, don't bother. Also, don't do Loomis instantly because it's something made for intermediate artists not something for a beginner.
The course is the art and science of drawing by brent eviston btw.

I had to take my talents outside the US because every studio here was full of these bizarre 'communist' types who were OBSESSED with homosexuality and spreading their cult views onto impressionable children. Cal Arts got more and more programs that basically said "If you pass these classes, we can almost guarantee employment at a major studio" and more and more studios hopped into that program to get cheaper/easier animators.

The problem is it basically turned a very creative medium into a factory, animation requires more creative individuals than any other movie, and when you just shit out bugmen mentality and nothing that comes from the heart or soul, you just get bland, generic mush like the Cal Arts style.

It's sad because I love animation, and seeing that most of it is shit unless its by some small foreign studio is just ass.

Lack of imagination of what can be done with the medium (which has kind of always plagued western animation compared to Japanese) plus only a small number of studios with zero creative vision having the whole industry locked down.

Also, this is purely speculation on my part, but I'd wager that a big factor in the recent string of flops is that the kind of people who make them overwhelmingly don't have kids and are completely out of touch with what children would actually enjoy.

Japan has a similiar problem with their industry. Everything is either otaku oriented ecchi, "was a regular high school student until", or a dog pile clone of the one original idea that emerges per decade. Usually all three. But that's not what OP asked about.
