Oh, they already had a barbarian.
When they ported the party to 3.5, they changed Diana into a Monk; so I suppose it was just early edition weirdness that they fixed later on. Considering that AD&D only had, like, five classes, they had to make something up. Hell, the very first D&D only had three classes, Magic-User, Fighting-Man, and Cleric.

Monk was a base class in AD&D. Thief-Acrobat, Barbarian and Cavalier were added in Dragon magazine before the cartoon.

Here you go. Even by 1e standards Diana is really more of a Monk in my opinion, although I also understand why they didn't call her that since most people think of something entirely different when they hear the word "monk".

                >Kits
I thought they were introduced in 2e, with Complete Fighter's or something.

You're correct that 1e didn't have kits, which only makes the name "Thief-Acrobat" more vexing. I'm not surprised at all that the show dropped it entirely for just Acrobat.

The thief-acrobat is a "split-class" specialist found in the Unearthed Arcana. The Unearthed Arcana is a first edition dnd product but it's pretty high powered compared to the base players handbook. This is where you first find weapon specialization along with higher class level caps and a bunch of other really good shit.

Is Acrobat just an entire class built around someone wanting to walk across a tightrope?

                Anonymous

Uh, sorta? They trade some of the basic rogue stuff for a mixed bag of jumping, tumbling, tight-rope walking, etc. They still have the regular sneak attack and are rogue guild members but their ability to pick locks, find/remove traps and pick pockets stops at level 5 when they start advancing as an acrobat.

I don't have much respect for the first edition rogue in general. Acrobats are kinda interesting in that they can completely dodge attacks with evasion and fall pretty far safely along with some other cool bits but they're probably equal or a little worse than their parent class. Fighter/Thief-Acrobat isn't bad if you're willing to multiclass.

If you're the kind of player that is always looking to find ways to get more use out of your kit they've got a fairly unique grab bag of shit to work with. If it's a combat focused campaign or you've got a DM that is going to smack you on the nose for trying some clever thiefy bullshit you're not going to have a good time.

Unfortunately while you're selecting the Thief-Acrobat the same book has the Cavalier (Paladins that get free stat bumps as they level, full plate at level one for free and more goodies) and Barbarians that get double bonuses from con and dex, exp for destroying magic items and are still fighters for weapon specialization. Bow specialization is sweet as hell giving you the point blank range where you do double damage. They can also knock an arrow ahead of time and get a free pre-combat shot. Clerics even get lesser golems eventually.

Weapon spec is some real crazy shit. You could double spec darts, throw three per attack and get your strength on each along with the +3 to hit +3 to damage from the spec. Oh, and you get multiple attacks faster with spec. At level one you get three attacks every two levels which used to require being level seven. Every DM I've ever known has house ruled away spec darts some way or another.

But hey, you picked the class that traded some rogue stuff for some jumpy tumbly stuff.

I never played 1e AD&D, but in 2e it seemed like every time my DM pulled out an official adventure module there was at least one area with a narrow ledge or something that required you to make a dexterity check or fall to your doom. I imagine it was a common trope in 1e too, possibly even moreso if player demand produced an entire class for overcoming terrain obstacles. (2e had a tightrope walking proficiency which any character could take if they paid an extra skill point. After a few campaigns I realized it was always worth it.)

Did they ever tackle any of Gygax's modules in the show? A Tomb of Horrors episode would've been kino with how much of a c**t that dungeon is

                >Did they ever tackle any of Gygax's modules in the show?
Versions of things that appeared in the modules appear, like the show version of Lolth appearing in one ep, but the show resembles other SatAM cartoons more than it resembles D&D.

Dunno about Gygax modules, but I got the impression one of the episodes was even an adaptation of Ravenloft, of sorts.

That’s because the satanic panic history got muddied by revisionism. Canadian journalists and school boards started the anti-D&D panic long before the satanic panic happened in the mid-80s. There where anti-D&D articles decrying violences long before the satanic panic happened.

judging from the newspapers articles /tg/ dig up. College feminist groups were involved in the anti-DND witch hunt before the churches noticed the game exist. It’s just the satanic panic religious groups had more media attention and more reach.

It actually came in Spring 1990, with the release of the highly popular live action Ninja Turtles first movie.
Soccer moms got into such a retaliation to it, that the creators removed the use of weapons in the sequel, removed the cursing and stopped any sexy scenes like there were between April and Casey in the first, to make it more “kid appropriate.”

I think it's less about the violence itself and more about how influential the Turtles were at the time. When something gets super popular with kids there's often a push from parents to clean it up in any way they think they can and make the characters into "better role-models".

It was much easier for magic users to be ineffective in AD&D because the DM usually had total discretion over which spells they got. And Dungeon Master is kind of a dick.

I always had the theory that the series is just a fictionalized account of one group's D&D session. That episode where Eric becomes the Dungeon Master is quite literally a narrative of one player getting agressive at the DM, the DM quitting and saying "fine, let's see YOU do it!" and eventually making ammends due to peer pressure.

The truth is kid actors are a pain to work with due to labor laws, so they got a guy the right height (whose body of work is probably being a stunt double and stand in for child actors) and called it a day.

In 3e's Deities and Demigods, Tiamat has an official stat block, but it doesn't use the CR system to gauge difficulty. It seems like she's around the CR28-32 demigod level.

Kinda weird how hard the AI struggles with eyes. It should be easy. But i guess too many references dont have the same direction they look. And light reflexes in the eyes seems to confuse the AI too somthey make these weird Rick and Morty eyes.
