You can self insert without it being a power fantasy. Alex is happy to convey his awkward nerdy wimpy younger self, horny dorkasses are the ones that need Dipper shredded and hung and mating pressing everything hot-babe shaped in a 20 mile radius which is a category that somehow suddenly includes every female character, a couple of male ones, some clones, a triangle, and Waddles.

In retrospect, they completely fumbled his "competence growth" character arc.
He starts out as a wimp.
Then he maxes out in Dipper vs. Manliness.
Then he reverts to being kind of a wimp.
Then he gets that one moment to shine in the S1 finale.
So... yeah. Not particularly good.
