A friend picked this movie for movie night once. He fell asleep in the middle of it. So this movie is not for you if you don't want a slow paced psychological thriller with a slow burn.
The things most of the posters ITT are saying are so far removed from what the film is actually like it's ridiculous. I didn't realise the average Cinemaphile poster was so moronic and genuinely lacking in consciousness.
It's really well directed and acted and, while it's no perfect masterpiece and won't become your favourite film, it's definitely worth a watch. My main problem with it is that a lot of the film's value is in introducing the audience to a bunch of AI philosophical concepts and arguments that are really thought provoking if you haven't heard of them before but if you already know about the chinese room or Mary's room then some parts of the film feel like you're in the tutorial level of a game you've already played
The premise is ruined by the fact that men aren't thinking when thinking with their dicks and it's impossible to use wanting to frick something as test for true sapience.
It felt like the director just wanted glorify some sort of artistic beauty in a guy falling in love with robot the same way Her did without taking a second to consider the premise.
Seeing if the robot was trying to escape is not proving it's intelligent since the earliest uploads of the AI had the robots screaming and flailing trying to escape.
That's a moronic concept, you didn't need somebody wanting to frick the robot to test its desire to escape.
My sister was right, the movie would have made more sense if the robot was an old lady, where the existential question of wanting to free it would be determined by pure social interaction.
That was what the director wanted, to have a premise where the AI was convincing enough in its interactions to spur an escape attempt. It falls flat because it forgets that men don't need to "sync" with women to desire their pussy.
It's a bit unrealistic that one guy not only created sentient AI but also lifelike robotics to go along with it and some new kind of magical battery technology.
I could see one guy making the AI but the robotics part is just a bit much.
