Kind of. I think Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise give very different, but charming performances. The Spanish one is far more serious and dry. The ending plays out much more differently. I preferred the lack of licensed music in the Spanish one and I thought Penelope Cruz is MUCH better in the Spanish original where she seems like a very sweet, normal woman unlike in the American one where she's this insufferable hipster. But Tom Cruise is more charming than the brooding lead of Abre Los Ojos and Cameron Diaz expands the role she's given a lot.
The original is better if you want something more raw that's more of a thriller. The American one is more polished and had a slightly happier ending, and is more upbeat in general, but the dialogue is a but too Cameron Crowe.
Eh it's alright. Probably Cruise's most unusual movie, maybe next to MR.

It leans on the sci-fi aspect and glosses over the romance. So it ends up being less schmaltzy, but also carries less emotional weight. And the lead doesn't have the Cruise factor.
I liked Penelope Cruz way more in the Spanish version though. She's beautiful and vulnerable, she seems so alive and sweet but is still attainable. In the Cruise version she's got a totally different personality, she is just another moronic Cameron Crowe manic pixie dream girl constantly quipping and shit. It's my biggest problem with the remake honestly.
It never stuck with me, so I guess I liked the Vanilla Sky one more. Her being a mime is the only thing I remember because it was so odd.
Yeah, she has moronic quips, but girls do be like that.
It's not that she has quips, it's that she is quipping like all the time. She seems constantly "on." Cameron Crowe fricks up and he writes a lot of female characters like this to the point where they seem inhuman and it got worse over time. Like Penny Lane from Almost Famous was unrealistically flippant and optimistic but then she also had her moments of being vulnerable and bitter. That made her feel more real. Then years later you had Elizabethtown where Kirsten Dunst is so chipper she's unreal.
Penelope Cruz in the original movie is amazing. She has this unreal beauty and liveliness but at the same time she's almost demure, guarded, wistful, and down to earth. She's like this perfect woman who is still within reach.
In the Cruise movie everything she says is too clever so it's like she's trying too hard to be quipped and it comes off as inauthentic. She feels like a character. A Cameron Crowe character.
It just never bothered me. Jason Lee bothered me, I never believed him for a second.
I suppose the attempt was that she was quirky enough that she's something David has never come across before even though he has access to any woman at all, which makes her special in his eyes and justifies him falling in love so quickly.
Whatever it was it worked on me, because I didn't cry over Abre los ojos.

Abre Los Ojos was rough and very dry. I prefer Vanilla Sky in every way, except for how Penelope Cruz's character was written. In Abre Los Ojos she is breathtaking and lovable. In Vanilla Sky she's just a Cameron Crowe female lead.
The soundtrack is good but there is just a little too much licensed music. Sometimes they will play 20 seconds of some licensed song to stop to play another 20 seconds of another song. I felt like something more subdued would have fit in a few times. Good movie though.
I thought that the first time I watched it, then I got into it the second time. It played like David was watching his own home movies with his choice of playlist.
I had the same executive stereo as my alarm clock and when i saw the movie i burned a cd of Penelope saying open your eyes and set it as my alarm.
I woke up to her saying that for years

>start movie >radiohead starts playing >close movie
frick off with your shitty 2000s music, that Sigur Ros song at the ending was so cheesy
A truly amazing movie. If you can't appreciate it, you're a pleb, I'm sorry to break the news to you.
>has nolanshit in his 3x3 >dares to call anyone a pleb
go watch real cinema, dumb newhomosexual
Obviously I'm gonna recommend them all very highly because it's my personal 3x3, but if you're looking for something to watch tonight, I'd suggest Waking Life, my favorite movie of all time. Sounds gay, but it truly changed how I think about my life.
Pure unadulterated kino. Made me cry cause Ive never had a girlfriend in all my 23 years of life.
you have to be 18 to post here

At 23 years of age a man would have had several girlfriends & he certainly wouldn't cry.
My pops never told me how to talk to girls on account of him working all day. Least I got you friends.
That's every dad ever though, what's your actual excuse?
Prepare to fall in love

The Cell but in reverse
Peak Lynchian romantic cinema
Eh it's alright. Probably Cruise's most unusual movie, maybe next to MR.
What?
Tom's most unusual movie up to that point was Interview with the Vampire.
Kino soundtrack. Tom cruise so kino. Hopefully you wake up to a penelope type beauty saying “open your eyes.”

the before trilogy is absolute kino
I haven't watched waking life in like a decade and don't remember much so I'll have to rewatch
>Waking Life
I watched the trailer and I'm leaning on the visuals are the appeal and the actual movie looks dumb as shit
the movie is dumb as shit
The true nature of women
Probably my highest IQ friend likes it. I don't. Cameron Crowe + surrealism + what's her name in a drama = Nah.
big kino
there's been quite a few threads on this movie, did I miss something.
I enjoyed it, but less so the second time around
Cinemaphile zoomers saw it mentioned in some manga and decided it's suddenly their favorite movie, that's how the threads started
Thomas Cruise is a ass frick hole
Eternal sunshine obviously, it's a crime to even imply these two are on the same level of quality.
Weird movie that wasn't that good for most of it. Well acted. 10/10 ending. That's all you need to know.
falling for penelope cruz over cameron diaz was a pretty unbelievable plot point
Uhh bros I'm half way through the movie... does he fix his fricking face or what??
Get ready to Cruise through Vanilla Sky
Cameron was never attractive. We got duped.
