There was a higher up writer/director of the PPG reboot that 110% put in some kid character that's kind of a Gary Stu and Blossom falls for him hard. I believe but don't know if he had some tumblr posts being a Blossom stan.
>I believe but don't know if he had some tumblr posts being a Blossom stan.
Given how poisoned the well of writers is, it wouldn't surprise me. No wonder craig came back to right the ship
Once you see it, you can't unsee it with Aang. It makes his entire character fall apart, especially when you realize this is why what few flaws he has are excused/deus ex machina'd or retconned.
It also makes EVERYTHING about Katara make sense. Of course she's a prodigy out of nowhere, of course she's always right morally, of course she got inserted into Zuko and Azula's Agni Kai to be the real winner. She's Mike's waifu. Of course she can do no wrong.
>Of course she can do no wrong.
Except in the case of picrel, where Aang has to be right at katara's expense.
Dont know what's worse, the fact that Mike made them such blatant sues/stues to begin with or byrke pivoting in the opposite extreme direction so badly in LOK/comics.
I think the writers tried to strike a balance with Katara only for the creators to go nuh uh. There was a whole episode with katara being salty about Aang picking up water bending so fast only for the next season to have her leapfrog him. iirc she wasn't being hyped as a master until about that time the creators needed her to be comfort Aang after getting chewed out by toph
I recall Katara holding back a massive deluge of water, mud, and rock from the Fire Nation's massive drill for minutes and questioning how she suddenly gained Avatar level feats.
>Lightning has clearly established rules about a clear mind >Except it doesn't in the last agni kai with azula because we need Katara to steal the win.
jfc of course it was because of her!
It's really telling since everyone here who agrees has specific examples of such while those who dont are quick to deflect. How do you even argue against this when "oh my energybending" exists?
Alright homosexual, you want counter-examples? I’ll give you counter-examples >Aang burning Katara after ignoring Jeong Jeong’s advice >Aang’s constant guilt at running away >Aang’s outburst against the sandbenders >Aang having to accept the Mechanist moving in on Air Nomad land >The comics painting Aang in the wrong for wanting to send the Fire Colonials back >Aang becoming a neglectful dad in LOK >Aang’s spirit being eradicated that same season
Energybending fricking sucks and so does Aang’s adult design, but it does not suggest a wider trend of Aang being shielded from consequences or immunity from moral misjudgment
>get's handwaved by katara's healing, thus lasting consequence aside from a mental he imposed on himself as a way for byrke to have their cake and eat it to
nope. >This flaw is never addressed and outright rewarded by the lion turtle
try again >Aang being rightfully pissed isn't a flaw, and he gets pulled out of it by Katara because of course
nope >accepting the mechanist moving into his homeland
i guess >the comics >citing the avatar comics
i'll stop you right there because this goes back to what
>Of course she can do no wrong.
Except in the case of picrel, where Aang has to be right at katara's expense.
Dont know what's worse, the fact that Mike made them such blatant sues/stues to begin with or byrke pivoting in the opposite extreme direction so badly in LOK/comics.
said about byrke going in the opposite extreme post ATLA. Yeah everything in the comics/korra are definitely flaws but not ones that are consistent with Aangs portrayal in ATLA. And even then the shit about aang being a neglectful parent got handwaved in the comics. They literally made Kya gay just to playdown concerns about Aang's parenting.
>T-those don’t count!
And this is why I was content in dismissing you because I knew if I did post counter-examples you’d just dismiss me right back. Did you seriously expect Katara’s hands to be horribly burned for the rest of the series? Or for Aang to straight murder a bunch of sand people? The consequences are there they’re just interpersonal rather than physical, it’s less a consequence of self-insertdom and more so Avatar is a kids show that runs within a 22 minute format. There’s just some things they can’t show or do and for the most part I’d say they did a good job circumventing those limitations, there’s plenty of shit Zuko and Iroh get away with I can list here too.
>muh those dont count >how dare you not expect a literal handwave when every other burn in the series has a lasting scar to go with it. >Aang was going to murder them, but not really because it's a kid show
I expected better of you anon. Yes, the lack of tangible consequences determines whether or not flaws hold narrative weight. Your point about interpersonal vs physical would have merit if the show didn't bend over backwards to make Aang running away the solution to the climax of the series. It outright validated is passive tendencies instead of confronting them.
Again i'm only really talking within the context of ATLA. you can call what byrke did with Aang afterwards flaws and i wont really fight you on that apart from the neglect. (they outright had bumi repeat the defense tenzin told him in korra to downplay the neglect via comic retcon)

Aang running away and being evasive is constantly thrown into his face throughout the series in episodes like the Storm and Bitter Work. Aang’s attitude in both the Awakening and the Invasion reflected a deep seeded need for confrontation, to correct his previous failures. This is why I called you a speedwatcher because all you seem to care about are the broad strokes and not any of the finer details within. Everybody on the fricking planet hates energybending but not because it “validates Aang’s passive attitude” but because it was a cop-out to Aang’s pacifist dilemma that wasn’t setup up at all. I absolutely agree, Bryke dropped the ball and dropped the ball hard in the finale, but to suggest that these cop-outs were an issue with Aang’s writing which prevailed the entire series is patently absurd.

It's one thing to throw it in his face and another to actually have him learn and improve vs cleaning up after the fact. Yes he did start to change with the awakening and day of black sun, but if byrke cared at all about continuity, then him running away in the finale wouldn't have happened as he has already learned from his past experiences. it's like they reverted him right back to the dilemma with Guru Patik only to give him an out instead.
I can agree that Aang's pacifist dilemma wasn't setup well even if it's not that much of a stretch for a monk to suddenly chimpout over having to kill someone. They waited way too late bring that up

I’d argue that Aang had made that change around the same time as Bitter Work. From that point Aang’s answer to most conflicts was confronting it head-on just as Toph taught him, Book 3 Aang was in full confrontation mode for about half the season before they completely retconned Aang’s development. It happens as early as Western Air Temple where Aang fricks off to go play in the Temple so he can avoid learning Firebending and only gets compounded in the finale where Aang suddenly has reservations about preforming his duty which he never had before. It’s shit
Bryan and mike seemed to share Aang. Zuko was definately Aaron's writers pet but i wouldn't say an insert. Iroh though was an insert for Aarons' grandpa iirc
They treated their actual “self-insert” Aang much worse in Korra, Sokka and Zuko (characters that supposedly Bryke hate because they were Ehasz’s babies) got off the easiest
>Sokka and Zuko got off the easiest

if we're entering comics territory then nearly everyone except for Suki and Ty-lee's characters get butchered, throwing away nearly everything they learned in the series.

Not sure what you think this proves
let's see.. they made him a lonely incel which dies off-screen, gets involved in politics for some reason and is rarely ever mentioned again except for Kya when he mentions him as 'uncle sokka' implying he took care of aangs brown skinned kids while he was away..
Oh yeah, and his girlfriend vanishes off the earth despite being an official member of team Avatar.
Dunno, I feel like they could have done more with him if they really wanted to, specially since LOK is full of unfunny characters trying to fill his role.

He wasnt completely 'left out' because of that scene and being mentioned from time to time, which just gives the feeling that the dude died with no legacy, I do agree that Zuko got off easy.
His appearance was quite irrelevant but the fire nation is still the most developed nation on the world and his daughter doesnt seem to have any daddy issues.
one wonders, how much soi does bryke have in their blood to self insert as a deadbeat dad anyway?

There’s certainly some, virtually every writer transmits themselves into their writing be it consciously or unconsciously. I don’t contend this, but beyond the design of adult Aang there’s nothing too egregious here. And no, Aang getting bailed out in the finale isn’t proof of anything but lazy writing

>but beyond the design of adult Aang
It feels like you're really under selling this, because it's more than enough here when one hears byrke compare Aang and Katara to that boy who likes his babysitter (their words, not mine). The fact that Aang looks nothing like himself and a lot like Mike is a red flag.
Oh, and I posted that picture because I just cannot stand how ugly all of the gaang's adult character designs are.

The only reason Cinemaphile believes that Amity is her self-insert is because of their self-spun conspiracy that TOH was just one big attempt on Dana's part to get into the real life Luz's pants, even though production on TOH didn't start until 2017/2018.

The only time an author should self insert is playing the role of god in their universe. At least you can make the excuse with characters in their stories trying to be a mouthpiece for their views making sense instead of one of the character being a direct self insert.
It was pretty obvious especially when he starts playing the live-action version of the character in that one episode. Ironic that he was the MC and was least interesting character that lived past the first couple episodes.
