What sparked my interests though was the movie Gummo, which i really liked but idk if it's accurate
"The South" means one thing geographically obviously but culturally, The South starts as far North as Kentucky. West Virigina is firmly in the South, you can even tell this by listening to the accents Chris and his family have.
As far as accurate depictions of the South goes I can't really think of any nuanced ones. Chris's entire oeuvre is decent really. His dad was a genuinely bright man with a successful career and interesting life, but his pride and selfishness drove away his family and into the arms of Barb, who gave him Chris and dragged him down to a grotesque lifestyle Faulkner could never imagine.

I grew up in the deep south before moving to the West Coast for my career, and honestly it's not that different at all. The few differences that exist are massively overhyped and mainly superficial, such as accent and cuisine. Even those distinctions are diminished by media helping universalize the midwestern accent and chain restaurants overtaking local ones. There is more poverty in the south and it has the bulk of the nation's black population, both of which create problems, but these same problems are present everywhere in the United States. Because the south is not actually very distinct, I don't know of any movie that specifically portrays it "realistically." Anything playing up the southern angle is going to be a caricature made up by people who have never lived in the south or the try-hard southerners who affect an accent and play up the "yall" thing, as though a second-person plural pronoun constitutes a unique and meaningful culture.
There aren't really any unique regional cultures anywhere anymore. Not in cities anyways. Regional culture is still alive in rural areas but all cities, even mid sized cities, are the same and full of the same basic people. You won't hear a New York accent in NYC, you won't hear a Boston accent in Boston, you won't hear a Southern accent in Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, Dallas or even small cities like Knoxville or Huntsville, you won't hear a Minnesota accent in Minneapolis etc.
