What are some failed franchises?

What are some failed franchises? I'm talking what execs and directors were thinking was gonna be THE NEXT BIG THING but never came to pass. Rebel Moon comes to mind for me on that end, at least with how it's going right now.

I'm so fricking tired of Sneeder getting "do-overs" for his garbage films. You can't "patch" films as if they're fricking video games, frick off.

        Anonymous

I think you fundamentally misunderstand what a directors cut actually is. It's not a "do over". In this case it was part of the deal that he made with Netflix that in order to make his R rated heavy metal inspired Sci fi film, Netflix wanted him to deliver a 2 hour pg 13 version for mass audiences. So you comparing it do a video game patch makes no sense because the R rated version is the original vision from the script. He literally filmed multiple versions of the same scenes specifically for the directors cut so it's not like he's retroactively going back to change things after the fact.

Huh? Why is there a non-directors cut? I don't think Netflix usually has a problem with sex or violence. Could it be that it's a scam to generate hype?

Kek, isn't Crowe 6ft? the height disparity would have worked since hew was meant to be this "looming presence" in the background.

The Mummy would have been good if it was the first installment of an Indiana Cruise series, and didn't have him get infected with Mummy AIDS. Even retaining his undead sidekick.

They were like one good story-session off cracking a proper billy dolla franchise.

The monsters should have been in the background the adventure aspect. And Crowe's org been way way way in the bg until like the second movie brief several, then full appearance in the third. Maybe with Hyde appearing as a shadowy force here and there. Flip the idea that Crowe is keeping "the monster" under control, and have Hyde using Jeckl as the org's front man. Later have some joke about him "Wrestling with his better nature", like he's a mix of Vader/Palpatine in one.

Give each monster a magical doohickey if you need a mcguffin to connect the adventures across 3 - 5 films. Cruise doesn't even know what they are as he picks them up through his adventures, or his undead buddy keeps telling him they're important, because he gets a weird vibe off them, but Cruise is still looking for "The Big Score". Like they represent man's conflict between material comfort and "spiritual wealth".

Why the frick did Netflix try to make this a franchise, all that did was set it up for more failure. It could have been a standalone edgy sci-fi action, which is totally fine.

      Anonymous

That's what it is, it's just one that's the length of six movies and an animated series or whatever. Snyder pitched the whole ball of wax at once, it's not like an honest to goodness franchise where they're making more of something because of popular demand, Snyder just a stand alone that was so bloated he couldn't fit it into a single movie. Did the same thing with Army of the Dead.

Rebel Moon is hot steamy garbage. I don't care if it is a 2 hours long cut, 6 hours long, or 12 hours long. I don't care who edited it, it's always going to be shit because the problems are not the lack of sex and gore, they are generic story, bad generic characters, laughable dialog, weak acting, incompetent direction. It's total shit.

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, comes even remotely close to TWD and the idiotic attempt to make it into a franchise in the first place. It's kind of entertaining by itself to observe as bunch of idiots is still fricking trying to make that shit work, even if the gravy train ride off a fricking decade ago, before they even tried in the first place.

Netflix gave Zack Snyder a blank check and he's doing what he wants with it. This isn't about supply and demand, this is about Netflix building themselves up as a home for big names' dream projects. Quality, marketability, whatever, are not a consideration. Production on Empires of the Deep started in ~2005, with actual shooting starting in 2009, aiming at a 2011 release. The film had an official budget of $130 million (although many people who worked on the film claim that the initial budget was much lower… but unintentionally ended up becoming much higher later), and was supposed to the franchise that dethroned Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings etc., with an animated series, multiple video game spin offs, and a theme park all in pre-production while the film was shooting.

As of 2024, Empires of the Deep remains unreleased.
