They wanted to be his subjects and saw him as their leader, they never questioned richards right to rule, they just hated his entourage exploiting them and giving him horrible counselling that lined their own pockets.

Cromwell was pretty good. Alec Guinness looked just like King Charles I. The costumes and props were outstanding as well. Not exactly accurate to history though but that tends to be common fair amongst historical films.
