Plague Dogs is crazy good. Anomalisa may be another pic but I didn't finish that one. Still need to see When the Wind Blows. Can't think of much that is bleak like this in Western animation. Mary and Max is a dramady with sad parts for sure but not really a feel-bad story. I'm sure there is some obscure shit out there that is bleak.
>Armenia had also some similar films and maybe Estonia too.
Are any of them subbed? I miss moody/dark cartoons so much, they were my favorite shit when I was a kid. But somehow modern cartoons are even more sanitized than the stuff for literal kids from the 80s. The only exceptions are the modern edgy cartoons but they are fricking shit.
I was like 5 when I first saw it, and this line stuck because cartoons weren't allowed to cuss. But when I was 14 and really getting into the history of WWII (we were still doing air raid drills under desks), and another line came up. "The war was fun."
During WWII they were kids and having fun up country with victory gardens and patriotism. They had no real concept of britzkreig air raids, the death camps, the hard line rationing, combat, etc. The post war victory propaganda was different in the UK than in the US. In the US the motto was "we won", but in the UK it was, "return to normalcy."
After the bomb hit, the old man asked his wife is she was wearing lipstick. Her lips were red. It turned out her gums were bleeding because her teeth were falling out. They were dead the second the wind blew. Fallout particles had already embedded in their bone tissue. They really thought war was a tournament of heroes and not mathematical death.
The last paragraph reminds me of actual documentaries about Hiroshima and Chernobyl I read. Shit is fricked up. Radioactivity is like those invisible evil supernatural forces humans always imagined and feared but real.
It depends. If your grandparents are still alive or if you were old enough to remember your grandparents before they died and have nice memories with them, the old couple may remind you of them and if so, it's makes it a lot sadder to watch them suffering.
Most of the training and guidance mentioned in the film and book are exactly what the government told people so it's not just an old coiple dying it's literally the entire population dying.
I read somewhere that The Snowman and When The Wind Blows is the exact shape of double bill as My Neighbour Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies, and I can't unsee it now.
This reminds me, I always wanted to watch Birdboy but totally forgot about it until now.
Has anybody watched it? Trailer looked fricked up but interesting.
this short film's message can be expressed in a poem: >rape is bad >bad and sad >makes me mad >never glad
hope that made it easier to understand.
anyway i like the animation style a lot, looks unique
>the other girls want daddy to kiss them goodnight too, not knowing what happened >oldest daughter knows they’ll get raped next and protests >sisters tell her to piss off, then slam door >mother gets pissed her her, also slams door >father tells daughter to Shhh once more, then slams door >daughter is now all alone, crying and suffering in silence
I considered it bittersweet since atleast this cartoon man had a wife, and they died together. I would rather die a bit earlier with a wife on my side rather than as a 100 year old NEET.
Is it just me or do horrible dystopian and apocalyptic worlds of fiction start looking more and more appealing as time progresses?
Plague Dogs. It's like taking Watership Down and just punching the viewer in the balls.

Did this really end the cold war?
This was released around the perestroika times. Armenia had also some similar films and maybe Estonia too.

No, Gorbachev sabotaging the Soviet Union from the inside did.
No, the Fraggles did that.
Thank you for your service Mr. Fraggles.
Nah, Star Trek VI did.
Yeah, ol' Ronnie saw it, a single tear ran down his cheek and he pushed the "End Cold War" button instead of the "Nuclear Holocaust" button.
Alas, well, here's hoping Vlad, Xi or Joey have less sympathy.
was the button big and red?
No, idiot, Rocky IV did.
No, I did.
That's cool. How'd you do it?
I made "When the wind blows"
You should have made "Threads", you could have ended it two years earlier.
I thought Pizza Hut ended the cold war.
I thought David Hasselhoff did that
It was a combination of this, Threads, and The Day After Tomorrow.
Doomer garbaggio
One of the funniest cartoon films made
but I laughed when Jim said COME BACK YOU STUPID b***h AND GET IN THE SHELTER

Average Brexiteer.

Fricking sad, man
Seeing a Soviet adaptation of a Bradbury story feels very weird.
Wait until you see the wonders they did with Asimov.
>moronic countryfolk die from radiation poisoning
what's sad about this

It's like Frankenstein or something.
johnny five is tired of your shit
That was pretty good
Watch out Radioactive Man!
This reminds me, I always wanted to watch Birdboy but totally forgot about it until now.

It's really good. Definitely sad, great animation, gorgeous art. The dub is good too, it's not necessary to watch in Spanish

I didn't get it.
He raped her.
Okay, that part I did get, I didn't get the rest.

What da heck now I hate rape?!?!?
You’re supposed to hate rape AND incest now. That’s the point. Still I will give you your good star.
Nah incest can be based, such as twins and protection from psychological abuse, just isn't based irl, kinda like the stock market.

Rather bittersweet than dark or outright sad but you might maybe enjoy the Maison de Pebreasts Cubes short if you haven't already seen it.
I bet we would have tons of such movies if someone would just throw money at Slavs to make cartoons already.
''I didn't coun't on being happy!''

>the boxes weren't meant to protect them from the blast but to ease the gathering of their bodies
Princess
frick. that came out of nowhere
