I think the same way, Mathias was my favorite character and i was actually sad when he died. But i still think it was okay despite all that, the ending with the captain defeating the bad guys legally on court was very creative

''City of god'' is the only good brapzilian movie i can think of. You might enjoy it too its a pretty accurate description of what the average favelamonkey life is like.
Nah, everyone here agrees "Tropa de Elite" is better in every way (story, pacing, acting, accuracy and direction). Foreigners like to think "City of God" it's the best one because it's how they view the country, when in reality the people who lives in favelas are only like 10% of the population.
City of God is certainly a timeless "favela" classic, but it has several flaws, there is another movie called "Cidade dos Homens" that is also better directed.

"Tropa de Elite" is brazillian "SWAT" kino, it's about the captain of the task force trying to find someone to replace him in combating crime, it's similar to the movie Colors 1988. I think it's better than City of God because it actually has a sequel.
"Cidade dos Homens" is almost the same as City of God but way less violent, the protagonists are not actually criminals but just live in the favela with them just like the protagonist from Boyz N The Hood. It has 2 protagonists, the blackiest one is the same actor that played that crazy psycho kid from the beginning of City of God but grown up
The sequel is shit though and makes the first one a waste when the Black person successor gets smoked.
The best part of Elite Squad is the hardcore BOPE training, the sequel has none of that, it's just a big apology for the first movie

I read somewhere that initially mc was supposed to be a complete scum of the earth, but then the director met the actor that ended up playing mc in both movies and he was to likeable so the director made the character more likeable as well. Also the director made this movie just so he could make cash for his next serious arthouse movie, but still put enough effort into Brat movie and people loved it.
