Thank you! I'll save this list and look into them.

I also enjoyed LOGH when i watched it at 18 years old. Found it a bit simple intellectually but good none the less. My favorite anime is Tengen Toppa Gurrenn Lagann, i would really recommend it.

I'll look into it, but it kind of looks like something a child or coomer would enjoy.

You haven't watched Cowboy Bebop? That's like the first anime rec to most people. I'll also throw in Planetes and Ghost in the Shell for other easy recs.
And you did well staying out of Cinemaphile. Rec threads aren't even allowed.

I've seen the original Ghost in the Shell movie many times. Sequel is good, too. Tv series worth a watch?

If you liked those things you're already armed with pretty big director names you can trace. Then you can start tracing people they influenced.
Like you like Cobra right. Dezaki is arguably the most influential tv anime director of all time. So you can go back and watch his girly 70's anime. Or if that isn't your speed you can watch his 70's manime. The Ashita No Joe films are an easy place to start. Skies the limit on contact tracing Dezaki and his former subordinates.
LoGH's harder to get recs from because its so unique and because its director, Ishiguro, was more influential as an animation director than an overall production director. You can at least try Megazone 23.
For SEL unfortunately Nakamura developed an acute case of death but you can so watch his other stuff. Kino no Tabi is pretty easy to get into if you liked SEL.
I'm less familiar with HnK's director but he has the same sort of problem as Ishiguro, he was more of an animation/character guy than a supervising director. But the original vampire Hunter D film is worth a look. Both Ishiguro and Ashida were heavily involved in classic Yamato series as animation directors so you should probably at least check them out.
As for Monster, I think it blows.

Rose of Versailles is kino you shit eating pleb.

Thank you anon! We'll heavily disagree Monster, but I'll take your recs and suggestion of looking into a director's work. Great idea!

        Yeah, ti's the best GitS.
Also, if you loved Monster so much you probably want to get into other works by Urasawa. 20th Century Boys doesn't have an anime adaptation, but Pluto got one recently.

Trust me, i'm so high iq that to teenage me LOGH felt a bit midwitty and i found TTGL very stimulating. I don't want to say anything else just not to spoil it.

Interesting. As far as anime goes, LOGH is one of the more complex, with dozens of characters and factions and a lot political drama. I did not find TTGL to be on the same level, in fact I think it's message is very simple, but it's very enjoyable, definitely one of the core anime.

Thinking complexity = intellectual is exactly the kind of midwittery i'm talking about. One simple idea can be a lot more intellectually stimulating than a phone book.

          >i'm so high iq that to teenage me LOGH felt a bit midwitty
I think trying to poke holes in an archetypal chink war record in space is the real midwittery. Or to say the execution at scale means nothing. The actual thing to dog LoGH for is what it looks like.
TTGL is exceptional at capturing the feeling of being an 8 year old smashing your toys together while making wooshing noises. It may not be Imaishi himself who said it but the quote about 'we're fine making burgers when other people want to pursue fine dining' sums up what TTGL is just fine. There's a place for that. I like TTGL. It's a good burger and its consistently well garnished with its ever-present themes about how cynicism doesn't make you an adult or urging you to just move forward through grief Except for the end where main character is stuck being a nobody doing nothing trapped by his own past eschewing a series worth of thematic beats But lack of ambition counts when you're talking all time greats.

Oh and I'm not going to Cinemaphile because their tastes are absolute trash.

Well, if you like Monster the obvious first choice is other Urasawa stuff, Pluto got an anime adaptation recently, I don't know if it's good but I'd assume it gets it done.

Given the other stuff you say you've enjoyed, and that hasn't been said yet, I'd highly recommend Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still. It's the first act of a larger story that never got a second or third, but it stands well enough on its own.

I'd also recommend Gankutsuo, unless you're super purist about The Count of Montecristo, it's a classic story with some wonderful visual direction (barring some cringe CGI).

Finally, I'll get shit for this, but unironically give Jojo's Bizarre Adventure a try.

Yeah it's LoGH's visually pretty weak. The one thing it goes out of its way to do is stage direction when characters are speaking. It's never just lip flaps and otherwise unmoving faces. But the rest of the animation and background art is trying to save drawing time most of the time.

            >Ashita No Joe films are an easy place to start.
You must be trolling. The Ashita no Joe "films" are nothing more than an edited version of the show where they just string a bunch of scenes together completely ruining the depth and weight of the story for the sake of creating an extremely condensed movie that's not worth watching at all. To do that to what is arguably the greatest character drama ever adapted into an anime is blasphemous and should be avoided at all costs. Not only that, but they ruined actual animation too by stretching the picture from it's original 4:3 aspect ratio to 16:9 so it looks more like a "movie" but making it look like dogshit in the process of doing so. There's no new animation and they butchered the original anime. No sane person should ever recommend that garbage.

I think Joe 1's tv anime is actually bad. The early 60's adaptations where they haven't standardized on one year productions have commercially motivated pacing so languid that it would make even modern One Piece blush.
Kyojin no Hoshi gets it even worse.

              >I think Joe 1's tv anime is actually bad
I don't believe this at all. In fact. I think it's the only anime of that entire era that can still be considered a masterpiece by today's standards. The direction is incredible, The performances are natural and not over-the-top most of the time, the pacing is done very well since it doesn't just throw you into the world of boxing and spends a lot of time world building and establishing characters unlike a lot of anime that came after it, and the animation is surprisingly decent and effective for 1970. It's stylistically dirty and urban to fit with the overall tone of the show. It has certain limitations of the time period it came out in but it's in no way a deal breaker. There's just no fundamental way I could consider it bad when it holds up better than a lot of anime that came out a decade after it even with advances in technology and other benefits newer shows of the time got over it.

                >the pacing is done very well since it doesn't just throw you into the world of boxing and spends a lot of time world building and establishing characters unlike a lot of anime that came after it
This is one major aspect for why it's better than something like Ippo. In that series, Ippo gets bullied and gets thrown into the boxing world in the very first episode where he discovers his talent. In joe, He keeps avoiding to box and doesn't even pick up a pair of gloves until like 8 episodes in. They care more about telling a good story with these broken characters instead of just training, fight, comedy relief, train, fight, ect...

I totally don't agree with you about the pacing obviously. I think it sucks the life right out of it.
There are individual parts of Joe 1 it does well, but by Aim For The Ace Dezaki is already doing those things better because he's doing them tighter.
Overall with Joe 1 I float from scene to scene I think "damn they really did that back then?" but my enjoyment overall sags in those inbetweens.

Lain was great but I disliked the twist. I guess I'd rather it was just simple technofetishist story with a cool protag.

LoGH I only watched few episodes, but the atmosphere is really nice. Evangelion pulls some bullshit but its technical prowess seeps into narrative.

Texnolyze was too oppressive, which is the point but it's so, so, so, slow.

I've been getting into Armor Hunter Mellowlink which has some well-thought out action setpieces and reminds me a lot of Berserk due to the montage techniques.

I know I sound like a homosexual boomer when I say this but I miss when anime wasn't so deranged and perverted.

It's better to watch anime movies. Most anime series aren't really worth their time.

Lots of good stuff was already mentioned (like TTGL, E7, GG, Kenshin) let me add some stuff not everyone knows, but its good:

    Queen Millennia
    Captain Future (German Version Soundtrack)
    Vampire Hunter D

Also, LOGH can be stimulating, but that doesnt exclude finding TTGL superb. Their premises are on totally different topics and themes and both executed masterfully for what they are.
Something I cannot say about anything that came out in the last 10 years. Please tell me ONE series, which 1. was a masgterpiece and 2. actually ENDED and wasmt skipped after getting nowhere in season XYZ

Yeah LOGH and TTGL are on complete opposite spectrums in scope and artistic intent, it's idiotic to even compare them.

      Forgot to mention:

      The Maxx
      Wolf's Rain

Not seen it yet? Give it a shot!

    >I miss when anime wasn't so deranged and perverted.

Dog of Flanders, Niklaas, ein Junge aus Flandern [German], Furandāsu no inu

An anime about a poor boy who likes to paint. It's 52 eposides of misery-fetishism ending with him freezing to death, leaving a goodbye letter. This series was together with HEIDI one of the greatest in the 80s. It is cause of hundreds of thousands of traumas worldwide 😉

Is it worth watching, if anything, just for the aesthetic?

Based opening. I enjoyed it when it aired in Canada back in the 00's when I was a teen. I think it would still hold up storywise. They really don't make animes like this nowadays.
