Aside from sports ball, there is no particular enmity for Michigan. Southern Michigan is basically indistinguishable from northern Ohio, except for the puzzlingly shit highways up there. I drive up for Skymint. That said, youthful energy is a double edged sword. On the one hand it means your town is growing. On the other it likely means its going to be extremely gay and dotted with garbage that destroys what it once was.

In terms of a reputation for rust belt towns, the midwest was the economic behemoth of the US during the mid 20th century. Manufacturing and farming alike were booming and busting at the seams, these were the highest middle class incomes in the country while the coasts were rotting. That all changed quickly and many towns/cities got hit with immediate blight.
It has since recovered for the most part and found its feet. Meanwhile if you got the deep south you will see some REALLY shitty areas, borderline Congo tier camps and shanties.
