Keeping the civilian population armed is in your best security interests. It makes any kind of invasion just a little bit harder on the invader. This only works if you're the greatest country in the world, though, since your people still need to be wealthy, educated, and free.
Sending civilians at an invading army with pistols and hunting rifles is horribly unethical and I'm pretty sure it's against the Geneva convention. I guess it could be a minor deterrent though.

I work in a prison. Sadly nowhere near as fun as the docs. Shit does happen, but when you're in the moment, even guys knocking each other's blood across the dorm with sock full of locks ain't as interesting as on screen 🙁
Asian ones are the real shitholes. 100 dudes sleeping in the same cell designed for 12. Some fricking old guy laying on the floor, been there like 50 years never convicted of anything just forgotten there, same shit food every day, how they dont die of malnutrion is a mystery
