This joke literally doesn’t make any sense. It was probably a funny in-joke to the writers, but to the viewers it’s just nonsense. Why would you advertise your dentistry as painful? You wouldn’t try to make it painful, nor would you advertise the fact it is painful since that is object negative. So what is the joke? Do we have to as viewers make our own joke out of the sheer laziness of the writers, such as the Chief crazy Indian or Chuck’s? How about formerly proctology, so it would suggest they’re using some of the instruments they used on anuses for peoples mouth. There, I now added an element of humor to it, and I didn’t even have to try. Fricking Simpsons writers. They can’t even try half as hard as family guy to be funny

      dentistry is painful
no drugs they give you can completely remove the discomfort of dental work
      the previous dentist was honest
he was run out of his job by the institution of dentistry for not being enough of a bastard
there is no joke, its a scathing commentary on the politics of all medicine by focussing on one well acknowledged aspect.

Homer laughing at the professor dropping his notes is one of the most "so dumb its brilliant" jokes ever.

It has to be considered in the context of the scene. It's an inverse of the scene that precedes it, where everyone laughs except Homer

it's funny because the current name rhymes with the owner's name, but it never used to. it's really unlikely that a man with a rhyming name would just happen to take over.

Did the writer and producers that created golden age simpsons go onto other projects?

The pretty much, the first 8 seasons had a rotating staff of writers and show runners that kept the show fresh. Its been ran and produced by Al Jean since season 13

So Al Jean oversaw the writing shift of the show?

Yeah, most people blame Mike Scully because seasons 9-12 are the first true change i guess

          >Season 1–2: Matt Groening, James L. Brooks, & Sam Simon.
          >Season 3–4: Al Jean & Mike Reiss.
          >Season 5–6: David Mirkin.
          >Season 7–8: Bill Oakley & Josh Weinstein.
          >Season 9–12: Mike Scully.
          >Season 13–31: Al Jean.
          >Season 32–present: Al Jean & Matt Selman.

Why was Al Jean in charge? He should’ve lasted 1 season before getting fired
