I grew up in something like this. Was great as a kid but as an adult I'd be pretty pissed. My dad got fined by the HOA for painting the garage door something other than a shade of white one time.

          Most people don't grow gardens

Every HOA is different and a number of subdivisions and neighborhoods don't have them. In other cases municipal codes determine what you can and can't do with your home and yard.

              Anonymous

Suburbs are meant to be low-crime by design, so a fence in the front isn't going to protect your lawn and shrubs from anything. The fences in the backyard are meant more for privacy and containing children and pets.

You have to be literally moronic to prefer living in an apartment instead of a house with your own garden.

I live like this, you are braindamaged. Amerimutts can be mocked for a thousand reasons but making fun of them for living in a house instead of a piece of shit commieblock is just ridiculous.

Yeah I can tell you're an amerimutt or someone who's never lived in a commie block. Commie block apartments are horrible. You hear your neighbors all the time. If there's construction in one of the apartments, you hear it even if there are several floors between you because it conducts sound. It is not exactly nice to wake up to a jackhammer raping your ears on the weekend.

The only problem with modern suburbs is the plot size. They pack the houses in so tightly that there is no yard space for large trees to grow. Only smaller ornamental trees that will never provide useful shade.
If you look at old photos of suburbs from the 50s and so on they also looked sterile and cookie-cutter when they were new, but now they look comfy because they have big trees lining the streets and alleys.

      Anonymous

Smaller plot size sucks, but it's better than pricing the lower-middle class out of home ownership. Plot size for starter homes has always been rather small anyway, look at the closeness and size of old mill village homes.

It's like b***hing about how uncomfortable air travel is now. Yeah, it sucks, but if it didn't suck a little bit then it would probably be too expensive for you

Is that from Vivarium? A good movie but probably one of the most downbeat endings I've seen. Super depressing. I did want to see a little more information or motivation like who does the boy meet or what's the point. But I guess it works as a mystery and motivation is just survival. Maybe that makes it more depressing, there's no grand plan, just the next Martin.

These neighborhoods look worse from the sky than the ground. I kind of agree with most posts here there's different sides. There actually are places that come close to the movie. Like you could get lost when there's only 3 different door and garage door colors. Who the frick does that appeal too? Yeah owning property is better I guess but some little square amongst a bunch of other ones isn't that great. The suburbs you might see in an 80s movie where the shit is more unique and a little more spaced out is cool. A really old apartment is cooler than a cookie cutter house.

Picture is from Saint David's, PA. I just remember going to the Microcenter there and thinking comfy area.

Lol bonus suggestion. Not dystopian but the area was cool. Movie is on the better side of so-so.

AHHHHH NOOOO PLENTIFUL LIVING SPACE WITH YOUR OWN BACKYARD, I'M GOING INSANE, SAVE ME MARX!

Generally suburban neighborhoods diversify after a number of years. When they start out new then yeah, the houses all look the same because it's built by one developer and a lot of the trees are freshly planted as well. Over time people add their own touches/landscaping and it becomes more kino.

When are they going to make a movie about the super rich colluding with the super poor to gang up on the working middle and squeeze them of all remaining resources and agency? Wouldn't that be a crazy premise?

    >people had to be ... LE TRICKED ... into wanting their affordable spacious house and clean plot of land in a safe neighborhood
    >people had to be ... LE PROPAGANDIZED ... into wanting their own affordable machine horse that opens up a world of opportunity and convenience to them and allows for at will travel anywhere

People seriously think like this. They make it a core tenet of their existence even. They wake up and start posting threads trying to share this with other people and they aren't aware of how they look doing so. In their mind, it's an "own." This is called being a narcissist.

I do feel like if you live in a big country that has enough wealth that the majority of people can afford their own vehicles then naturally the public transport is going to be shit. unless you think your local government should invest your taxes into a transport system that no-one uses.

It's also obvious projection. They think the only way popular things could ever get popular is due to propaganda, not natural utility and demand. Therefore they think their meager attempts at propaganda are going to register at all, whatsoever, with normal people. They shill commie blocks and busses and trains to a mass of deaf ears.

And being narcissistic, they seek to eradicate that fear and insecurity by forcing it to "disappear" by way of outlawing that way of life and forcing everyone else into their own rank. No consideration at all for another perspective or desire.

You can see trees are planted. You realize that shit takes years to look like that right? I design landscapes for businesses and wealthy people, the amount of times I have to tell people that their final design won't really come to fruition until a decade later is baffling sometimes.

honestly people both sides of this argument are stupid. there should be subdivisions but there should also be good rail and bus lines connecting these areas to cities. there should also be dense condo areas and superblocks in cities that could alleviate the housing shortage with bike lanes within.
