I read Biomega and it was such a mixed experience, some scenes are really good and his art is great, but the story is a fricking mess at first with dozens of names and people that come and go for no reason, also whenever there's an organic looking enemy it was impossible to understand what the frick was going on.
Sidonia (anime) was fun I guess.

He should have stuck with being an architect and only drawn manga as a hobby side gig.

But Blame was such a success that he was able to quit his job and he also didn't really like drafting boring commercial buildings for rich boring clients

Im a casual with his works, having only seen Sidonia anime 1st season back when it came out and from what i recall, it was alright, cool deep deep sci fi scenario.
Although Blame! picked my interest for a while, might read it in the fututre.

I watched the first few episodes of Sidonia and I hated it. Maybe his other stuff is more interesting

It'd be cool if Polygon decided to evolve their style into something palatable, it looked good in Sidonia because it was space but here it just looks cheap and plain bad.

haven't really read/seen much nihei stuff, meant to read blame! at some point but it always seemed just slightly too weird for me to get into.

i love the setting so much, sucks that it's polygon, that's pretty much the only reason i haven't watched sidonia.
also, i like sawano but goddamn he needs to take a break, he's working on at least one show a season and it's starting to be a bit much.

this, i feel like it's the shading or textures or something that makes everything seem so...primitive. wish he would work with someone else.

        >meant to read blame! at some point but it always seemed just slightly too weird for me to get into.

Blame! isn't that weird. Some acquaintances once described it as a "dungeon crawl in manga form" and that kinda sums it up. It's just an atmospheric storylite romp in which cool dude wanders through some atmospheric places while looking for macguffin, and occasionally fights some stuff, and that's about it. There's a lot of loose worldbuilding implied visually, but not much really concrete. I binged it in a single night and it was alright, I feel like it's more something to either vibe to the moody atmosphere or take aesthetic inspiration from for your own works then anything else.

Polygon is such an incredible mismatch for his aesthetic and the fact that the partnership continues feels like some sort of weird ironic punishment for someone who made a wish way back.

Sidonia is great. id say it's one of the best 'mechs vs space bugs' shows. Up there with Nadesico and Gunbuster

i dunno it shat the bed in the 2nd season imo, too much fanservice shit--such a weird turn. and the movie ending was kind of lame

I liked the weirder shit in season 2. But I'm also biased towards all the girl cucking & I haven't got to see the film yet

    I've only read Blame!

It's a nice experience but not something that had me riveted. My impression of him overall is he's a great visual guy and has some interesting concepts and premises in his head but isn't much of a writer and can't handle characters or larger narratives.

I've always enjoyed his art (especially the earlier stuff when he knew how to shade) and concepts, but he does have a habit of recycling things and reworking them to fit into whatever story he's trying to tell. I guess he's like Leiji Matsumoto in a way that he intentionally makes separate stories feel connected, but in a way that's impossible to concretely reconcile. My favorite work of his is probably Blame!, though I enjoyed most of Sidonia. Aposimz was super disappointing and felt rushed, especially in the last few chapters.

It's a bit weird because I really wish I liked him more than I often do. Like I LOVE his flavor sci fi. The massive empty mega structures, the giant emptiness of space, unknowable alien monsters and all that kind great big space horror type deal. But his stories kind always sort of buckle and not really focus on that aspect. Blame! was probably his best and I was sort of digging Sidonia in a big way for a while but it just kind of... got dumb.

I love all of them, he's one of my favorite artists working in anime/manga right now.
Even though his stories aren't the best, I just love how incredibly imaginative his settings are.
I'm looking forward to that anime he's working on in January.
He's only credited with the concept art and I think scenario for it so it's possible the story would be one of the better ones depending on who the series composition staff is.

my only exposure to him was the abara manga and a few chapters of the sidonia manga and watched the anime a bit, not sure if he improved or not but I agree with you, shit was confusing but his art is great

I remember reading the first tank or so of Blame! off geocities scans or something similarly ancient when it was new.
    Seemed cool.

unfortunately i've only watched blame and sidonia and not read the manga, the sets are gorgeous and inspired. the stories are certainly lacking but the potential is always there, i'm eager to see what else he does

really like Blame and Sidonia.Biomega isnt for everyone but thats ok.I knew had seen his name somewhere before and it turns out that he made that comic about Johnsons escape from the flood(halo).he most have spent hours in that game since all the details are on point.

People shit on him too much. There's literally no way anything can live up to Blame, it's seriously one of the best manga of all time.

blame, noise, abara and some of the short stories are amazing but everything from the 2nd half of biomega to sidonia to all the newer stuff are all terrible and halfassed. the art got a massive, massive downgrade. it makes me wonder if his good early works are thanks to an uncredited superstar assistant or something

It's probably connected to his depression.
      https://desuarchive.org/a/thread/241727539/

I don't think his early art was due to assistants because his solo illustrations have that style.

people say something about his daughter telling him she didnt like his earlier manga and thats why he changed but idk how true that is
i think he might have tweeted about it

Blame! is a favorite of mine, one of my favorite manga. Sidonia's alright, it does jump the shark at some point but I still mostly look back on it fondly.

Loved Blame! especially the ending. Biomega started out strong and just became a convoluted mess over time. Sidonia had some cool mecha designs.
