1 - all interaction with this "person" is either one-way or fantasy, it's literally impossible for the person to feel rejection or experience embarrassment
2 - through extensive media exposure the fictional character can become an ubiquitous fixture in the person's life (maybe one of very few), and one of the primary motivators of romance and eros is familiarity and regularity.
In general kids of both sexes are having far more parasocial relationships and dating far far far less. There are lots of proposed reasons but the most obvious one is simply that kids stay at home and frick around on screens all day instead of wandering around a mall or city center being bored. Hooking up used to just be something to do, and now it's something you essentially go out of your way to do.

This seems like it could be at least partially true. I was never allowed to alone around girls my own age. Even in High School, being unsupervised with a girl was a hard no. I was taught that sex is only acceptable between a married man and woman and that pre-martial sex of any kind was one of the worst possible things I could do, right up there with murder and marijuana. Alcohol is okay though if you're at least 21. Throughout my teen years I secretly jerk offd despite being in constant fear of my dad beating the shit out of me if I were ever caught.
