Both good choices really.
I liked how they handled that scene where they all met. The implications when Garfield says he stopped pulling his punches after a while was a good way to leave it to the audience's imagination. I also liked how Maguire was more restrained in sharing but still would drop nuggets of wisdom. Just enough to give encouragement and advice when needed like when he gives Garfield a pep talk not to give up on his personal life. Really gives off an older wiser mentor image.

I doubt Burton’s involvement went any further than “hey do you wanna do this?” “No”, especially after the flustercuck that Superman Lives turned into. David Fincher had more involvement, he pitched actual ideas like skipping over the origin and only showing it in flashback during the opening credits. I think he wanted to do the night Gwen Stacy died?
