It's cool to hate on Buff here but the movie looks unlike anything else, very interesting compositional choices combined with the decision to shoot on reversal stock created a very singular aesthetic.
It also has very a eclectic soundtrack and incorporates the directors own weird ambient experiments.
It appears to be a quirky crime comedy to begin with but the real theme of this movie is the few moments of impact in early childhood that have the potential to brand us for life.
It has a very positive message for people feeling the weight of this deterministic viewpoint and basically says that love can break you out of this self-victimisation.
I can certainly understand people finding Buffalo 66 to be pretentious or boring but it's a very special movie to me and clearly resonates with a lot of other people.

I don't think it's cool to hate on it here, i think people like it a lot

I’m not hating on it and never said it was boring. Just think it’s massively overrated by hipsters. If it was in the IMDb top 250 people would shit on it. I also feel he ripped off Cassavetes even though he claims to not like him as a filmmaker. I actually think the brown bunny is much better

Curious what Cassavetes movie you think he ripped off? I’ve only seen “A Woman Under the Influence” and that was a long time ago.
I agree that Brown Bunny is far better but it’s just way less accessible, the average person is not even getting to the end of the motorcycle race before switching off.

All cassavetes films are about ripping apart/discussing love which was central theme in 66. The bowling scene was very similar to a scene in love streams. Ben gazzara appeared in many cassavetes films and gallo picked him on purpose implying he’s seen many of cassavetes works. Was a ton of critics comparing 66 to cassavetes style when it first came out.

spot on, the ending is one of the most uplifting scenes I've seen in a film and it manages to create that feeling without being hokey at all

I like hearing people who love B66 describe why its important to them, it sounds so much more genuine and personal than the typical review of a film. This guy had it right
the whole movie is a snapshot of a man whose entire life has been one big cope because of some poor unfortunate events that determined his life before he knew he was living

movie easily feels an hour longer than it actually is and i wouldnt be surprised is half the people who watched this movie turned it off during the whole family meal scene, that shit was the worst. but overall still deserving of at least one watch, the chick is so cute and sweet and i've never been more attracted to a woman (appearance and personality) in a movie as much as her but women as nice as her dont even exist in real life.

Gallo is sleazy and obnoxious and literally makes movies where he "gets the girl" while being a sperg. And not the endearing kind of sperg either, but the kind you want to actively avoid because he's selling his ass in back alleys and is likely just rancid from head to toe.

Just a NY hoodrat running his mouth.

you forget that he's a literal chad in the movie.

what? his character is a kissless virgin hung up on an obsessive crush he had in the 3rd grade

he's still tall, really handsome, very good looking, and canonically has a big dick, he's a chad.

I don't know what else to tell you. If you don't get it from the final scene where he goes to grab a coffee and cookie, and happily buys one for another patron then you're just never going to get it

The scene of him at the diner after the girl falls for him where he calls his buddy that hes been a dick to the whole film and he just oozes happiness and self acceptance for the first time, one of my favorite movie scenes of all time cant think of another movie that captures that relatable hopeful spirit. It felt like one of us Cinemaphile types had finally had something good happen to him after a lifetime of being shit on. Then theres the weird depth to the father singing scene where you really feel this old man's former glory, and the therapeutic quality of Billy bowling getting all those strikes.

Just feels very unoriginal and the fans make out like it was some kind of revolutionary film making
