the veiled prophet org started in a similar fashion to the KKK, but it isn’t the KKK. less violent. black migrant workers started moving up north for work after slavery, and in St Louis there were also growing labor unions. unlike in other states, the blacks ended up allying with the Irish over labor issues, the other main source of cheap labor. the businessmen at the time didn’t like that, so they made this veiled prophet society to get together and scheme on how to keep control of the labor. it’s supposed to be themed on some old science fiction book, and they threw in all the mystical bullshit to seem above everyone else. so the whole veiled prophet ball is just a distraction to keep stupid people from paying attention to the men behind the curtain, plus it gives the wealthy families opportunity to marry their girls off and make more money by having closer ties with other rich people.
the whole thing has very little to do with racism, her dad is president of commerce bank, which is the biggest bank in Missouri. all of the big grocery stores and utility company owners are known to attend to. it stopped being ‘racist’ in the 70s officially, now it’s basically just a televised 4th of July party. she went to the ball so long after everything important happened, it’s kind of irrelevant imo
