Every Coen brothers movie has something about nihilism. They clearly have an interest in it.

The three main characters each represent an aspect of time. Walter, a Vietnam war veteran who converted to Judaism and watches a dog for his now ex-wife, represents the past as he is mentally stuck in it. The dude, with his go with the flow, take life as it comes attitude, is the present. It’s been recognized by some viewers that the dude’s personal philosophy has more in common with Buddhism, a practice of which being meditation which aims to center your consciousness in the present moment. Donny, being a little out of touch, unable to follow Walter and the dude’s arguments, is the future. Because Donny dies and that’s the inevitable future for everyone. A storyteller’s job is to convey meaning through a narrative sequence: the present is happening because of the events of the past, the future will happen due to the events of the present, and so on. Thesis, antithesis, synthesis. Precondition, sequence, consequence. Past, present, future. The nihilists are a diametric opposite to that understanding of time, because they don’t infer meaning from anything. And because of this inability to imagine what will be based on what was, they’re not very good at executing a coherent plan. They are purely reactive drug addicts. Even when the dude and Walter explain they don’t have the money, they refuse to believe them (because they believe in NOSSING, LEBOWSKI!)

It’s just a funny gag, he’s still faithful to the religion of the wife who was unfaithful to him
Also they based his appearance and interest in guns on Milius, who is israeli

It’s a send up of LA film noir. The title is a spoof of Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep. A major theme of most film noir (just watch Chinatown if you only want to watch one) is a distressed widow who hires a cynical private investigator to discover the true events that led to her husband’s death which reveals a conspiracy that goes all the way to the top (some elitist industrialist who has the local authorities in his pocket). In The Big Lebowski, instead the elitist hires a burnout to find his missing trophy wife. The big reveal is that the intimidating elitist has no real power, his daughter is control of his finances, and his wife faked her own abduction to abscond with the ransom money.

nihilism leads to stagnation and a constant sense of having to fight against the system.
since any sign of caring means lacking in nihilism.

Considering the movie ends with Maude bearing his child, do you think The Dude would make a good parent?

No. He'd be neglectful. Not on purpose but he can't even keep fresh milk in his fridge.

you must be fun at parties.

I think Maude would be very “type A” and take charge of parenting and the dude would remind his kid not to take everything so seriously and it’s okay to relax and have fun a little

If someone else did all the actual care, then I think he'd be like an acquaintance to his kid, a friend at best when it gets older. His philosophy of abiding happenings would have the kids life glance over him while never establishing any stronger bond than what we see with what amount to the closest people in his life in the film.

Uli is sleeping drunk in a pool so the dude says this as if Uli tired himself out because it takes effort to be a nihilist when his lifestyle clearly requires no effort at all.

He's a "nihilist" and is sleeping, and Dude is making the observation that it must be exhausting. Normally you would not presume that nihilism is physically taxing, thus the juxtoposition that causes a humorious situation.
