This documentary actually convinced me that gender theory is more right than wrong. The main premise this guy went around asking was for a definition of a woman. He can easily get that from a dictionary.
But when humans say they are a woman, for example, they are referring to their gender identity and not their sex assigned as birth. Yet, for some reason he keeps harping on that woman = female. It's apples and oranges.
Even the chicken example was ridiculous too. Our understanding of gender for humans has superseded biological definitions for sex, yet he purposely conflates it as well. We don't call female chickens "women" - they're not fricking humans.
Overall it was a pretty disingenuous piece of commentary but can totally get the appeal if you're still someone living in the past.

Our social conception of gender is informed by underlying biological features that are true for the overwhelming majority of the population.
Trans people don't have any of these biological features.
The idea that we can and should induce hormonal intersex conditions in children so that they can have these features is an underdeveloped and poorly utilized idea, and we possibly shouldn't even be exploring it from a moral standpoint.
This isn’t that complicated. Man and Woman can be defined both through cultural concepts and biological sex but these things don’t always link up. If you are trans and a kid, if you wait till you’re 18 to “troon” out you are absolutely fricking fricked. You now have to contend with a post puberty body which means any changes that would have come through hormones or puberty blockers is meaningless now. Time to pay tens of thousands to try and look “passable”. I just don’t see the point in this. We can’t even have a good faith conversation because literally everyone on fricking Cinemaphile comes from the school of “everything is a israeli cabal plot”. Judge me on the value of my post, not other posters anon. I tried to address a lot of the things you said in your post in not so many words but let's dive into it.
Puberty blockers can seriously frick you up, so waiting until you're old enough to make a decision isn't a good option.
Hormones can make you have characteristics of the opposite sex but also come with complications. Even if they didn't, a majority of children will grow out of gender dysphoria if left alone. For those that don't, there's some evidence that there are some markers you can look for in order to determine who is genuinely "trans". However, if there's a good study that controls for factors like outside influence and treatable psychological conditions, I haven't seen it. I am still diving into the literature though.
All of this is a moot point if professionals don't use any of the markers of actual "trans"ness though. And in many particularly egregious cases I have seen, they aren't being used and no one is being held accountable. The issues of informed consent go beyond this.
This is all unacceptable ethics when it comes to dealing with the development of children. There needs to be more work done before I dream of supporting it.
You don’t actually believe that a kid who starts HRT at a young age is going to turn into an idealized version of the opposite gender when they grow up, do you? They may look more convincing than the goofballs you see posted commonly, but they’ll still have very obvious defects compared to people who are that gender naturally from birth. If some can't deal with that reality, and they need society to pretend they don't have a unique biological situation and use certain language to deal with that, we should be seriously looking for alternative psychological treatments for kids with even the most strong gender dysphoria. It's just not possible to control that without tyrannical rule.

On the surface level you want to block the development of children that would occur naturally and do surgery on their genitals. When people say "gender identity" they seem to mean their personality, which is inconsequential and shouldn't be the basis of policies. Our social conception of gender is informed by underlying biological features that are true for the overwhelming majority of the population.
Trans people don't have any of these biological features.
The idea that we can and should induce hormonal intersex conditions in children so that they can have these features is an underdeveloped and poorly utilized idea, and we possibly shouldn't even be exploring it from a moral standpoint.
This isn’t that complicated. Man and Woman can be defined both through cultural concepts and biological sex but these things don’t always link up. If you are trans and a kid, if you wait till you’re 18 to “troon” out you are absolutely fricking fricked. You now have to contend with a post puberty body which means any changes that would have come through hormones or puberty blockers is meaningless now. Time to pay tens of thousands to try and look “passable”. I just don’t see the point in this. We can’t even have a good faith conversation because literally everyone on fricking Cinemaphile comes from the school of “everything is a israeli cabal plot”. Judge me on the value of my post, not other posters anon. I tried to address a lot of the things you said in your post in not so many words but let's dive into it.
Puberty blockers can seriously frick you up, so waiting until you're old enough to make a decision isn't a good option.
Hormones can make you have characteristics of the opposite sex but also come with complications. Even if they didn't, a majority of children will grow out of gender dysphoria if left alone. For those that don't, there's some evidence that there are some markers you can look for in order to determine who is genuinely "trans". However, if there's a good study that controls for factors like outside influence and treatable psychological conditions, I haven't seen it. I am still diving into the literature though.
All of this is a moot point if professionals don't use any of the markers of actual "trans"ness though. And in many particularly egregious cases I have seen, they aren't being used and no one is being held accountable. The issues of informed consent go beyond this.
This is all unacceptable ethics when it comes to dealing with the development of children. There needs to be more work done before I dream of supporting it.
You don’t actually believe that a kid who starts HRT at a young age is going to turn into an idealized version of the opposite gender when they grow up, do you? They may look more convincing than the goofballs you see posted commonly, but they’ll still have very obvious defects compared to people who are that gender naturally from birth. Beyond that, there's no good case for calling even the most perfect trannies "women" or "men". They are "trans women" and "trans men".
For the same reason that a social conception of a woman formed around the biological facts of males and females, there are biological facts informing what a "trans woman" and "trans man" are, and there needs to be a way to refer to that.
If some can't deal with that reality, and they need society to pretend they don't have a unique biological situation and use certain language to deal with that, we should be seriously looking for alternative psychological treatments for kids with even the most strong gender dysphoria. It's just not possible to control that without tyrannical rule.

What does it mean to "feel like" whatever sex? How do you intuit this feeling? If you think hormones is confirmation, then you're suggesting "feeling like" X sex can be found within hormones; where? What molecule encapsulates experience? What molecule has "sex" within it, as well?
If there is the issue of feeling like someone is in the wrong body, again: how did they intuit what it's like to be in another body? Getting surgery or taking hormones, etc. doesn't put their consciousness into another body: it's still their body.
The heart of the problem is experience. You just cannot know the experience of another. The frame of inferrance is self-referential and circular, essentially. You can open a brain and you will not find experience therein. Ask anyone how they know what it feels like and you'll always get an emotional, self-referential basis which is a non-answer.

You want to know how you can tell it's all bullshit? The debate around women's spaces. Their argument is always that they don't feel safe using men's spaces, because they fear assault in them. But women don't feel safe letting just anyone into their spaces, which is pretty legitimate, predators will try any trick to get to their prey. The logical solution would be a third space. Transwomen can be safe there and women don't have to fear letting potential predators into their spaces. Nope, not good enough, they HAVE to be allowed into women's spaces. So it's not about safety at all, it's about dominance and breaking boundaries. They're really doing a fantastic job at validating women's fears, because behaviour like that is the behaviour of a predator
