I felt similar as much as I tried to like it. I find all of lynch's discography pretty comfy except for this. Some of the sets are cool but others just feel like they take place in an antique shop. I wish Lynch didn't experience such heartache on this film, though he wasn't kidding when he said how purified a good portion of it really is
People that think that is a better adaptation are delusional, it goes off rails halfway through and Lynch fundamentally misunderstood the book, the finale reveals.
Said this, there is much to love and I enjoy it. Production design, costumes, many charismatic actors, many interesting environments, the guild navigator scene.
>Lynch fundamentally misunderstood the book, the finale reveals
This
I assume he didnt even read the book, since the book goes through great lengths to explain why there would never be "green paradise" as worms are essential to creating spice, and water kills them lol
The book baron is kind of a wuss, I thought DUNC Part Two conveyed that well even if it doesn’t really gel with how the first movie tried to make him more intimidating
I haven't read the book so I just took the movie on its own. It starts off rough and a bit chaotic with all the various characters scheming against one another, but once the Atreides are BTFO'd it starts to come together.
The cast is great, the visuals, music, and atmosphere outstanding. The worm scenes are still impressive even today. The resolution is very choppy and the whole thing ends too quickly, but overall I enjoyed it.
tldr: good but not great sci-fi epic.
needed to be two movies and it would have been much much better. 4 hours it could have a nicely paced and interesting movie, but at 2 hours its just... a little rough.
I watched this for the second time just yesterday. Much better cast than the remakes. More serious as well, in an odd way. Villains like the Baron, the Emperor and Feyd felt much more intimidating despite some camp scenes because you could see the mental sickness.
As someone who hasn't read the book, I think it's alright. The second half seems rushed, but it's preferable to sitting through two and half hours of Dunc Part 2.
Its incredibly. Stuff like it can't be made today. People don't care enough to. People like Denis get tons of money to make shallow products for the masses. Proof of demise.
The spicediver cut is kino but it should have kept the original ending. >b-b-but muh book, Paul is supposed to be subverted as the hero because jihad bad, rain would kill the heckin’ wormorinos :~~*((
Frick that, Paul wages holy war, wins, becomes God, and creates a paradise on the planet his followers come from. It’s the most based ending in any version of the hero’s journey.
Its quite atypical of a lynch film in that at the start there is a long exposition from the blonde babe who has zero actual lines in the movie, explaining the universe and what is going on.
But Lynches style wins out in the end and it becomes a BYOP movie (bring your own plot). You can just fill in the fricking gaps yourself, like what is a kwizatch hadarack sp? Or what a weirdo module is. Or what that fricking thing in the tank early in the movie was about. Or the bald can maybe read minds woman are about.
If you haven't read the books or its 1984 and there's no internet, you just picked this movie to go see with your gal on a Saturday night, you're fricked. You will have no way of understanding half of this stuff. And if your gal and you actually watched the movie instead of making out during its 140 minute runtime then you'll probably be single by the end of it. Giving you plenty of time to go read the books and figure out wtf you just watched.
As a fan of the books, I’ve always been extremely mixed on it. I think most of the cast are superb choices, Kyle MacLachlan and prime pre-insanity Sean Young as Paul and Chani especially wipe the floor with Chalameme and Creatura. A lot of the aesthetics are very on-point and feel much more appropriate to the universe Herbert described, but then there’s things that are just terrible like the ornithopters and the trashbag Sardaukar. The soundtrack is great. Sonic weapons because they thought audiences would be too stupid to understand the voice not so much. I think on balance I’d rather watch the restored cut of Lynch Dune than sit through Villeneuve’s soulless effort again.
I’ll go against the grain and say I hate the aesthetic, it’s weird sure but it’s also cheap. Half the costumes are just black trash bags
I’ve been unhappy with all three attempts at portraying the Sardaukar tbqhwyf >1984
normal guys in hazmat suits who do literally nothing >tv series
normal guys in purple chef hats who do literally nothing >DUNC
jobbers in generic sci-fi armor who only get one cool scene
The telltale sign that Villeneuve either doesn’t know or doesn’t care about the contents of the novels. At least the Sardaukar got a slight pass for rule of cool, but all the Atreides troops decked out in it really pissed me off. The stillsuits in the new film suck as well, most things to do with Fremen aesthetics for that matter. They’re master craftsmen with a middle-eastern influence and THIS is the best he could come up with?
I love it. absolutely kino. I grew up on it cause my mom liked the movie. I remember as a kid she'd randomly use the phrase "tell me of your homeworld, Usul" to me after watching it together became a thing. a great movie attached to equally great memories.
Dune is one of the worst boring shit sci-fi settings and Lynch is one of the worst most overrated shit directors. The only thing the Dune movie has going for it is that it had a majority white cast full of good looking people and not Zendaya and a rat faced israelite
I read up on it a little and apparently the theatrical release was butchered by producers, but then they made some longer version for tv which Lynch himself disliked, so I am wondering which version I should watch.
On the weekend I watched DUNC part 1 and could barely stand Zendaya's resting b***h neanderthal face.
Those bald bene gesserit grandmas with metal teeth are honestly more repulsive then the thailand ladyboy zendaya. I can't believe the great houses would agree to breed with such grotesque rancid women like that for centuries. how fricking grim
My only complaint is that some of the acting is really, really bad, like so stiff and weird it has to be on purpose, but then other times they act like you're supposed to act in movies.
>but then other times they act like you're supposed to act in movies.
"Acting like you are supposed to act in movies" changed though the decades. Personally can't stand current lack os "stylization"
>mfw there are probably less then ten women in the world who wouldn't be filtered by the lynch version and actually enjoy it as high art
i'm gonna be alone forever bros
People on here either love it or hate it. But most people realize it sucks
God will smite you
I liked it and compared to what I've seen of the new one, I would say it has more soul and better acting and costumes
Would be revered as Lynch's greatest work if the book didn't exist.
It's a masterpiece that is getting deserved recognition now that we've seen just how soulless the new movies were
it's the very definition of kitsch
80's were a mistake - only lols from that period
Exists only so Cinemaphile can b***h and moan about Zendaya.
It was good up until the long drawn out ending where they're blasting shit on top of a worm for 30 minutes
I’ll go against the grain and say I hate the aesthetic, it’s weird sure but it’s also cheap. Half the costumes are just black trash bags

The guilds outfits and aesthetics are iconic tho
Harkonnen soldiers look better in the nudune tho
People that think that is a better adaptation are delusional, it goes off rails halfway through and Lynch fundamentally misunderstood the book, the finale reveals.

>rain scene at the end
Just frick off
Lynch definitively misunderstood the book.
He also made the villain a floating fat man, more comic relief than dastardly.
his Baron is literally the best of all adaptations. It's the only one that's any good whatsoever really.
>Lynch definitively misunderstood the book.
Ah, yes, rght. And so did Frank Herbert, who loved the film. Only YOU understand it.
The book baron is kind of a wuss, I thought DUNC Part Two conveyed that well even if it doesn’t really gel with how the first movie tried to make him more intimidating

hot shit
The first half is excellent. A million times better than the new Studio Approved (TM) PG ones by Dennis Villanova.
It does completely fall apart in the second half though.
I loved it, greatest movie ever. Can't wait to watch it someday
I've seen it hundreds of times.
I used to put it on every night to fall asleep to.
I can recite every line of dialogue.
It's an okay movie.
needed to be two movies and it would have been much much better. 4 hours it could have a nicely paced and interesting movie, but at 2 hours its just... a little rough.
Hated it until Dunc became popular. Now I pretend to love it.
Theatrical is the best possible cut of this film.
I watched this for the second time just yesterday. Much better cast than the remakes. More serious as well, in an odd way. Villains like the Baron, the Emperor and Feyd felt much more intimidating despite some camp scenes because you could see the mental sickness.

Holy shit is that the guy from fallout
It's a pretty bad movie, but it's hilarious and a fun watch.

is that from The Warriors?

>pre-insanity
Only sane actress to make it out of Hollywood.
ChatGPT post
Ironic for you to say that considering Villememe’s Dunc movies look like they were generated in Stable Diffusion.
I’ve been unhappy with all three attempts at portraying the Sardaukar tbqhwyf

I enjoyed it very much. It probably helps that I never read the book so I took it as it is
I seem to remember that when this came out most Dune/SF fans thought it was shit. Maybe that was just in my area.
If you look at this and pic and think of anything but greatness you're ill minded homosexual monkeys are your tribe.
It's a bad movie but it has its charm. Music saves it.
The cast choices for Princess Irulan and Alia are kino, the wh40k tier tech demonstrated in the show are also pretty nice.
>put the pick in there, Pete. Then turn it round, real neat.
What the FRICK did he mean by this
I read up on it a little and apparently the theatrical release was butchered by producers, but then they made some longer version for tv which Lynch himself disliked, so I am wondering which version I should watch.

HOLY SHIT!
WAIT! is that the same guy from Amazon Prime Fallout TV Show?
No, it's the paraplegic guy from Desperate Housewives
it's charming, Kyle MacLauchlan is great but it condenses dune and the pacing sucks. it's hard to watch at points
Those bald bene gesserit grandmas with metal teeth are honestly more repulsive then the thailand ladyboy zendaya. I can't believe the great houses would agree to breed with such grotesque rancid women like that for centuries. how fricking grim
Flawed but good. Always liked it.
