This, I thought it was meh the first time I watched it because I wrote it off as monster of the week and only half paid attention, but something, maybe the constant online memes or the themes of the TV ending, drew me back again and I fell in love with it the second time
I mostly enjoyed it but it is basically monster of the week plus teenage melodrama and the heavy handed symbolism at the end doesn't elevate it for me. I particularly liked the atmosphere of those scenes where it was sunny and you saw the exterior of those huge, decaying apartment buildings.

When it first came out I refused to watch it because everyone wouldn't shut the frick up about it and I'm not watching a show about teenagers in robots but 5 years or so later I watched it and it's one of my favorite shows.
I've even got eva merchandise. It's a shame anno shat the bed with rebuild, it started out with so much potential with those little hints that there's a time loop but he threw it all in the trash and made the last 2 movies shitty on purpose so nobody would ask him to make any more eva IMO
I didn't like the rebuilds at all. They seemed to just throw as much fast moving shit on the screen as possible during the action sequences. I think anno knew the nu-animation could never compete with the hand drawn original and was overcompensating. Furthermore, asuka is flanderized too much, and the new girl was completely forgettable with no emotional stakes.
Between matrix 4, star wars 7, and evangelion rebuild, these studios need to stop with this half-baked half-remake half-sequel shit. Pick one
Imo the first 2 are OK and the orbital retrieval sequence from the 3rd rebuild is one of the best parts of eva, period. the rest of the movie is meh. Asuka is infuriating, she's not the same asuka as the tv show, her name is different and that was another one of the little hints everyone was expecting to have a big payoff at some point but in the end it was just more meh.
Same with mari everyone wanted to know wtf her deal is and that didn't really go anywhere either. A total fricking trainwreck. What a waste of everyones time.
